How to pronounce Slavörg
« on: August 23, 2015, 03:38:58 PM »
I have noticed in various videos, mainly from Arcane Duels (awesome job guys!), that there is a very American pronunciation of Slavörg.
I don't know if he is a well famous fantasy creature out there already, but since he got a special character in his name which only can be found in the Scandinavian countries (and actually in Turkey as well) I, as a Swede, will try to make things correct.  :)

There are three parts in the name that needs a bit of explanation:
1. a
2. ö (which actually is only found in Swedish since this: "ø" is the letter in Norway and Denmark)
3. g

1.
The "a" should be a long vowel. Like in the British-english tomato.

2.
The hardest part.  :)
"Ö" is a character with a sound you can find in the end of the english word "saboteur".
https://translate.google.se/#sv/en/sabot%C3%B6r
Click the speaker button to here it.
Here you can also see the the Swedish word uses "ö" in it.

The word for "Island" in Swedish is actually "Ö". So here is it in its pure form:
https://translate.google.se/#en/sv/island
Click the speaker button again.

3.
The "g" is not as in George, which to me sound more like an "j".
It is a "g" rather like in "guantanamo" (sorry, couldn't find a better example)

There we go. No more Slavv-jo-rg or Slav-o-rj, but Slavörg.
Hope you agree and find it interesting.  :)

Ahem. There is another country with ö. And while not Scandinavian, it's certainly Nordic.
And Wikipedia informs us that there is "no English equivalent; somewhat like bird."

 ;D
I can take the fun out of anything. It's true; here, look at this spreadsheet.

Ah, you are correct. It's late over here and I must have had a brain freeze. Sorry.
Anyhow, the way "ö" is pronounced is still the same anywhere.  :)

Fas723,

This is awesome! Seriously, my pronunciations are a little (very) bad, so I appreciate this!

As sIKE already mentioned ä ö and ü are Umlaute in Germany. Besides this, I totally agree with fas723 pronunciation. I was looking for that latters for written pronunciatio (found out its called IPA), but it seems like Slavörg is more or less written as spoken.

I would write this that way: [sla:vørg]

I have a vague memory from when I studdy German that the Umlauts weren't a part of the proper alphabet, but some kind of add-on. Maybe someone can correct my memory if it is wrong.  8)

I expect you to do better the next time he comes up in one of your videos!  ;D
It would at least be fun to hear you try.  8)

Next time I say his name on video I'm going to pause before and after the pronunciation. That apprehensive silence will be just for this forum thread. In that silence, you may judge me.  ;D

Next time, you should do a dramatic pause before and after, then have your editor dub in a computerized "speak & spell" voice over it.

English doesen't know this sort of signs we add on letters in french too (é è à ê ë ç...)
it's not part of the alphabet but it's definitvely part of the signs we use to write!

Well, that's true. Our alphabet goes from A to Z, like the english one. But we do have 4 more letters: The beforementioned Umlaute ä, ö, ü and our ß.
ä, ö and ü are variations of a, o and u, you get them by adding an e to the letter. So instead of writing ae, you use ä. In crossword puzzles it goes the other way, if the answer is Öl (oil), you spell it Oel.

And we have our ß. It's called SZ or sharp s. We use it instead of ss sometimes. (In my opinion ß is totally useless and should be replaced by ss in any word.)
Fun Fact: ß is the only german letter that doesn't have a capital form. When using capslock on the internet, you have to replace it by ss or the word looks really silly. FUß or FUSS? Both are feet, but I don't like the way one of them looks.
Our keyboards use Shift + ß for the question mark. Did you knowß

Oh, how i wish some creatures was named using my language :D

We have 42 letters in our Alphabet :)

Problem is, when you look at translated words from scifi or fantasy, they didnt sound that cool and sometimes they sound unapropriet.
