Greetings! At long last we have some pictures and a (roughly remembered) synopsis of the GenCon 2018 tournament!
As has been previously stated, there were 15 competitors hailing from St. Louis to Charlotte in the United States and a crew that made it all the way from Canada!
There was so much to see on the first day that everything is a glorious blur of dice and markers. At the end of the first day we had one player at 4-0 and 4 players at 3-1.
It was determined that VictorE and Arthur could duke it out for the final spot in the top 4. Arthur graciously chose to forego the fight and let VictorE advance to the final 4.
Pictured here is the giving of Arthur’s Sportsmanship Award for his sacrifice. He played a tough Necromancer that caused a lot of pain to his opponents.
THE TOP 4Semi-finalsTable 1: VictorE (Wizard) vs Coshade (Priestess)Coshade and VictorE both jumped into their economy game with Cassiel and Temple of Asyra arrayed against several channeling increases. As the Disciples of Radiance hit the field VictorE shut it completely down with a well-timed Mordok’s Obelisk and an Essence Drain. This is the first time Coshade has had to shift to plan B and he answers by advancing with a Knight of Westlock and supporting both Knight and Priestess with Cassiel. VictorE begins turning the Arena into a Tesla Cage by flinging Bolt after Bolt of empowered lightning at Coshade. Through all the damage, the stuns fail to come and Cassiel eventually sustains the Priestess to victory. A very enjoyable match to watch!
Table 2: Millie (Necromancer) vs Farkas (Straywood)I was not the judge watching this match, however, I do know that it was incredibly hard fought on both sides and this was the nail-biter of the top 4. A very high amount of concentration and tenacity exhibited by both players. Ultimately Farkas emerged victorious and I believe it had to do with Pet falcons and a very irritating Taunting Ferret.
FinalsTable 1: VictorE (Wizard) vs Millie (Necromancer)At the time of the clash an Eternal Brute, a Skeletal Archer and a Skeletal Knight are staring back at a Gorgon Archer and a Devouring Jelly. Twin Teleport Wands translocate things around the arena, the dice fly, the curses stack up and the Wizard eventually falls to the combined might of Brute and Boulder.
Table 2: Farkas (Straywood) vs Coshade (Priestess)The final match for 1st place is an epic rematch. In the swiss rounds, Coshade eked out a victory vs Farkas with a critical cleric roll having only 1 health left on his Priestess. Now the final game was for all the proverbial marbles and neither player was going to back down. Birds clashed with laser clerics, the Beastmaster hid in the Elephant Grass, but eventually, Divine Asyra Intervenes and the Priestess Purifies the Beastmaster from the Arena with the help of her Radiant Disciples.
Trophies are given, hands are shaken, and pictures taken!
