Arraxian Crown OCTGN: I WANNA PUNCH YOU!
« on: February 01, 2017, 09:57:08 AM »
Im back on OCTGN  :)

So im getting spellbooks online and creating new ones.

Mostly im going to work with the worst mages. Or rather mages some people think are bad.

I want to make a Warlock that goes into melee - everything else is secondary.

Regrowth Belt 6           8
Sanguine Hunter 3       5
S: guard

9                                 14

Im going to try to change this from a curse Warlock to a killing machine.

step 1
cut down the enchantment from 32 to a much lower number

step 2
cut down the mandatory dispels and dissolves and come up with something else.

Feedback very welcome, but id rather have you come play me at OCTGN. Or maybee even beat me with your own Warlock?

Is the AC really considered a bad mage? I won 2 tournament matches with the same AC warlock book. For what reason do people find this mage bad? He's the least squishy mage st 38 life, dark and fire are both amazing schools. What's the issue?

Hi Biblo,

I'll be interested to hear if you can make Sersiryx work.
Whenever I tried him he always fell flat for me.

When going melee first I would suggest to take two Fireshaper Rings and at least two, more like three, Lashes.
Losing the only one you currently have would hurt the strategy, I guess, as I think the Burns and Reach play a crucial part.

I also use two Rise Again and a Blood Demon Blood Reaper for this strategy.
When you have two (very) hard hitting creatures ( Mage and Reaper ) it becomes possible to take out lvl3 and higher enemy creatures in 1 round. The kind of creatures you're looking for to rise up again.

Quickcast Rise Again just before the attack that takes out the creature.
This way you get your Rise Again back into your spellbook immediately after you cast it and you don't risk losing it.
Obviously works only vs living creatures but also vs legendary ;)

A Critical Strike might also come in handy.

Enjoy your upcoming games, I'll surely check them out if they get recorded.

Ninjad by borg.
Same thoughts: one lash is not enough if melee is your main goal.

You have a lot of curses left in your book. So mybe you should consider a sectarus dark sword to do melee and curses ar once.

What also could help is falcon precission and mongoosr agility to get your hits through in an case.

Ok first played my first game vs a Druid.

Didnt finish but still got a lot of ideas.

Sersiryx as this book is on OCTGN and Blur is legal. Hopefully should keep him alive longer. Now som of the new curses  helps your own creatures. So he should be more usefull.

Without a creature spanwpoint, i feel i have to summon all my creatures before i move forward. Takes a long time.

Agree with Borg on 2 Rise Again - just a way to get an strong army.

Early Bloodreaper always seems to fail. Your opponent will try to take out the Bloodreaper - so i see a lot of games where you just end up with -4 life.

Am trying a Sanguine Hunter bloodreaper as the first bloodreaper guy. Might add Sunfire Amulet to go Boodreaper buddy - if he dies, summon another. SH are cheap, so its a way to save some mana.

Will play him as my main mage in February - and i think i will get Keejchen to play vs me and hopefully record it.
Besides ill post once a week with thoughts and updates.

@RomeoXero

I loved Warlock back in the core set days - best attack spells by far - lots of life - good punch - amazing healing..

1. Druid vs Necromancer. Warlock has not been the same. Non-living creatures?, Half my curses doesnt work? and he has Dragoscale hauberk x 3 + Elemental Cloak x2. At least vs Druid it should be an auto win? Not for me.

2. ^^ Dragonscale Hauberk + Ele Cloak + Fire protection - if thats your meta its just harder to be a Warlock.

3. Remove Curse. Did not help.

Theres lots of new nice Warlock stuff, so thats nice!

And here i am going back to AC Warlock :)

Engaging first, then summoning Blood Demon Reaper + Rouse the Beast can be quite effective and surprising imo.
I've always considered Rouse the Beast an attack spell in disguise. In this case 3 mana for possibly 6 dice.
When you're already engaged in combat your opponent may also have less time to focus down your Reaper.

EDIT
Posted my own AC Warlock book in another thread.

Played my first couple of games with Warlock and already my head is spinning with ideas!

1. Buddy build with Goran the Werewolf Pet.

2. Ranged attacks/curses w cloak of Shadows to make them come for you.

3. The Warlocks Army. Build a bigger army than your opponent. Is it that simple?

4. Malacoda rush. Cheetah speed move to NC Cast something. Lesser Teleport + run and hit opponent.
Poison Gas Cloud, Pillar, Malacoda - doubt this will work.

5. Battleforge - where to place it, when to play it?

Id rather loose a Battleforge to an enemy using actions/spellpoints/mana, than put it safely in my starting corner and then not be able to use if when/if i go on the offensive. Or maybe even wait casting it.

Thats it for now.

Battle forge has a 0-2 range when casting equipment as dictated by the range on equipment. So depending on where you want the fight to take place dictates where you want the forge. A melee build will want to place it mid centre  (b2 or b3) and depending on how much you opponent moves you choose where it goes.

Personally I feel a solo mage is not the way to go, you always want at least a buddy. Afflicted demon or blood demon both make awesome reapers. You will always need anti swarm tools in this build as a swarm can easily overcome a solo or buddy build unless due to having a lot more activations.

I always put a single heal in dark books and take the 6sbp on the nose. This single piece of burst healing along with trickle healing can win games.

Played my first couple of games with Warlock and already my head is spinning with ideas!
Nice to see you follow up on this thread and share your ideas, Biblo, as this in turn generates new ideas in me and no doubt in others as well ;)

First up, I'd like to make a comparison between Drokarr and Dark Pact Slayer as this was mentioned in the other thread. As far as I can see DPS is just the better creature altogether.
- Both cost 3 sbp's
- Both have 2 armor
- DPS costs 1 mana less : 13 vs 14
- DPS has 3 more Life : 14 vs 11
- Both have the same attack line : 4 dice + Pierce 2 but for Drokarr this is a FULL action while for the DPS this is just a QUICK action which makes a world of difference.
- DPS has Flame -2
- Drokarr has a Grapple attack but rolls only two dice with that attack. Two dice he can get back IF he can attack his grappled prey the following round. So over a two round span they both roll 8 dice ( 2+6 vs 4+4 )

The problem imo however lies in the Grapple.
- At 5+ that means it has a 33.33% chance of failing
- On top of that, the prey has at least a 33.33% chance of breaking free at the end of its action ( 9+).
That percentage increases with every point of damage done to the Grappler.
- That means that Grapple will on average fail at least 55.55% of the time ( and more if damage is done ) before you can get anything out of it.
( 33.33% failure chance when attacking + 33.33% chance of 66.66% ( =22.22% ) afterwards )
- Thus : a 44.44% effectiveness percentage is just not very good nor reliable imo.
- Grapple may have a role on a creature you want to put on guard most of the time as he can lock down any creature that attacked him, including flyers.

So, DPS is considerably better than Drokarr imo.

The thing you made me realize with these points is that AC Warlock can carry multiple sub-strategies altogether in his book - like a toolbox book if you will - and these sub-strategies can still reinforce one another.

What I mean by this is, there's no reason, if you play AC Warlock, to not at least include 2 Rise Again as this spell can totally swing the power balance and something like 4 Chant of rage to bring the opposing creatures to you.
2 Rise Again + 4 CoR is just 10sbp's for 6 power cards.

At the same time, I see no reason not to include at least 1 Enchantment Transfusion+Ghoul Rot+MageBane
as this set of highly valuable spells can be added for a mere 5 sbps.

The thing about Warlock is, you'll always have to account for at least two completely different situations :
Living opposition and non-Living.
With the current cardpool I think you can well account for both within the 120 sbp limit.

Malacoda+Cheetah Speed for 6 sbp's makes for a great choice ( which I doubted at first, shame on me ;) ) vs living opponents and/or swarms.

Vs undead you need another answer though and I think the Fire Elemental could be just what we're looking for vs non-living. Incorporeal, non-living target makes zombies weep, not to mention it has a damage barrier with high Burn and daze chances.

5. Battleforge - where to place it, when to play it?
Id rather loose a Battleforge to an enemy using actions/spellpoints/mana, than put it safely in my starting corner and then not be able to use if when/if i go on the offensive. Or maybe even wait casting it.

Another very interesting observation.
I think Battle Forge is mostly still seen as a R1 (R2 the latest) spell but it makes complete sense to hold off on casting it early.
Play a threat or anything else the opponent has to worry about first, then play the BF rather than the other way around.
The two most obvious advantages I see here are :
1- it may increase the chances of your BF's survival as your opponent may already have other, more pressing needs to take care of rather than having the luxury of spending a round's focus on your BF.
2- it may allow you to cast the BF in the zone where you ideally want it and have ideal arena coverage, rather than in a safe zone with very limited arena coverage.

I appreciate it very much you take the time to share your thoughts and observations on the games you play, Biblo.
We need more threads like these. ;)

So im taking a closer look at piousfleas old Lord of Terror spellbook

As the basic idea is the same: punch the enemy in the face, i thought it well worth our time to take a closer look at this.
Im out of MW´s time for the day :(
So ill come back tomorrow with more comments on this.

piousflea don´t really play competively MW anymore, but if you ever get the chance to meet him (at Zots house fx) say hi from me, and ask him for an opinion on your book/play. His got a very sharp eye and mind for this.

Spellbook should be at 91 expect i added Sectarus (as piousflea hinted he would add) So the one extra point is most likely a Magebane or Agony.

So im trying to take a closer look at creature selection for the Arraxian Crown Warlock.

Playing without a creature spawnpoint vs an opponent who has one is pretty tuff.

If your opponent is putting out af Timber Wolf or something like that every round and you only have a handfull of creatures, you might just get outgunned at some point.

The neverending Rise Again "trick" might help, but still i think you would want some solid creatures on your own.

Top 10 AC Warlock Big Buddy list:

#1 [mwcard=MW1C01]Adramelech, Lord of Fire[/mwcard] The Lord of Terror himself. If your opponent doesnt have counters to him, he might just win you the game. Flame Immunity is nice so you can use Ring of Fire and Firestorm without daminging him. Vampirism+Battlefury might just keep him alive. Flying creatures are still a lot harder to hit than non-flying ones.

Zombie: If you should get him back, everything works.

Drawback: His expensive - you can almost get 2 Dark Pact Slayers instead.

#2 [mwcard=MW1C26]Necropian Vampiress[/mwcard]

Another classic "buddy" choise and with Vampiric is really nice. She is able to support herself and hopefully be around for a decent amount of time. Quasi-flying just nice.

Poor choise for Rise Again.

#3 [mwcard=MW1C03]Dark Pact Slayer[/mwcard]

Not much to say. Still one of the best Bloodreaper choises out there.

Everything works if you bring him back.

#4 [mwcard=MWSTX2FFC02]Blood Demon[/mwcard]

The Second Bloodreaper choice. Flyings cool. Again his is able to support himself a bit with the Vampiric.

Not a great choice for Rise Again.

#5 [mwcard=MW1C17]Goran, Werewolf Pet[/mwcard]

Another classics demon. Have not seen him used much (if at all)

For a in-the-face build like im mostly trying to do here, he should be a decent choice.

Cant be used as Bloodreaper, but everything works if you bring him back.

#6 [mwcard=MW1C23]Malacoda[/mwcard]

An old time favorite of mine. Never really got him to work well. But he should work well enough.
Cheetah Speed, Lesser Teleport, Force Push.

Can´t be used as Bloodreaper but he is still poisoness if you bring him back!

#7 [mwcard=MW1C16]Flaming Hellion[/mwcard]

Great creature! Like many Flyers and Ranged Creatures not a lot of life.
Most Familiars and Archers hurt a lot with Chant of Rage. Flaming Hellion doesnt.

Everything works with Rise Again.

#8 Drokarr

Pretty big and scary demon. I pretty much agree with everything Borg said about Dark Pact Slayer being better than Drokarr. Grapple is a new thing for me, and its completly unexplored in our local meta.

Is there any situations were keeping a creature in the zone would be good? Malacoda, Goran.
How about something anoying you dont really want to spend to much time on? like an intercept guard?

I don´t know, and i have to put him in a book or two and try it out.

#9 Mhegedden

Have tried him and i felt he slowed me down. Have seen him work amazingly in a 3 big strategy and should work well with Sacrificial Altar and seems an obvious choise in Pentagram build just because of Sacrificial Altar. Piercing 5 on your Fireball in midgame :)

Bring him back and his all sealed up again, so i dont see that unless you plan to sacrifice him.

#10 [mwcard=MWSTX2FFC11]Sersiryx, Imp Familiar[/mwcard]

With the new benificial curses it seems, his gotten better. Still got cut from my current Malacoda/Goran books, but have him hang back in your starting zone. Not that bad of an idea.

Khali-Gar and Skeelax did not make top 10 bigger Warlock buddies list. Please tell me if im wrong or have forgot someone or of course if you agree with me.
Ill be back with a lesser demon list and the i have to go through my Skeletons, Zombie and other nasty things card piles.

If anybody can think of some nice out of school creatures you would bring, id like to hear about it.

I think the one who's currently being overlooked is the Flame Elemental.

There are a few cards he doesn't like at all like Surging Wave, Dragonscale or Elemental Cloak
but I think the Fire Elemental can be a star vs Necromancers ( Incorporeal, Non-living ) and both Warlocks ( Flame Immunity)
Beastmasters and Warlords could also have trouble with him.
Against Siren and Druid he would probably have a hard time.
Holy has lots of Ethereal damage.

I like the idea of Guarding behind a Wall of Fire with him, then playing Chant of Rage on a creature on the other side.
That's 5 dice + Burns from the wall + 5 dice + Burns from the Elemental + 2 dice + Burns from the Damage Barrier.

Fire Elemental and CoR have excellent synergy imo.

Thanks Borg :)

I completly forgot the Fire Elemental. How could I? - faced him a couple of times.
Pretty good synergy with CoR i agree - most creatures don´t really want to hit the Fire Elemental.
Battleforge Gambit might be a good idea to lure your opponent to spend 1-2 surging waves.
A backup Fire Elemental might be needed.

Magma Golem deserves to be mentioned as well, even if I think ill leave that one for the female Warlock.

Asto Vidatu, Angel Slayer is a promocreature i got a really big stack off at Gen-Con. Pretty cool and all, but the spellbookcost?

If i ever learn how to post pics i could post screenshots and stuff..
Tried a while back, but gave up on that.

Made a pretty bacis Warlock flying book
Angel Slayer
Lord of Terror
4x Blood Demon

Rise Again
Chant of Rage

Actually to many creatures vs living creatures anyway.
Asto Vidato, Angel Slayer isnt that bad, and in a semifast book why not ?

I noticed no mention of Afflicted Demon. Too fragile for you? (at 8 life, 2 armor) Handing out 2 Weak tokens before swinging with 5 attack is pretty solid if you can keep him alive long enough for him to do his thing. Good target for Gator Toughness, maybe Iguana Regrowth.

Judging that the Antarian Sslak family is Arcane & Dark, I have a feeling Asto Vidatu might be intended for the Dragon Archmage that's been teased for a long time.

As for Magma Golem, I recently noticed that the Warlord is trained in him as well as anybody (e.g. 6 sbp's)... Could be an interesting buddy creature with either an Orc or Dwarf Warlord: "Surprise!!"

Nope i have not forgotten about Afflicted Demon :) or any other of the lesser demon/ minor demons/level 1-2 demons. Lesser Demons comming up!

Currently im working on a book thats using:

Goran the Werewolf Pet
Skeletal Archer
2x Infernal Scourger
2x Sanguine Hunter

Sanguine Hunter seems to be a great choice for a low level demon bloodreaper.
6 life and 1 armor makes him a lot more sturdy than any other level 1 demon.

Drawback is he gives 2 damage to a friendly creature in his zone when his summoned, but still.

A friend and fellow MW player praised and praised
[mwcard=MWSTX2FFC08]Infernian Scourger[/mwcard]  a long time ago. I did listen, but I had other mages on my mind back then.

Counterstrike is really nice as my friend told me, and with the +2 Bloodthirsty his starting to look pretty good.

The real problem is: How to keep Infernian Scourger a live long enough to get some real value out of them?

Altar of Infernia
Agony - lots of Agony

Dodge
Glancing Blow

Fumble
Stumble

CoR on Warlock or Big Buddy (Fire Elemental might work better)

Giant Size

Sanguine Thist (especially if you run Sersiryx)

Akiro´s game

Just saying theres alot of options here. Lots of stuff i have not tried or even thougt about before.
