Swarmmaster (3 creatures per round)
« on: September 17, 2016, 03:09:15 AM »
This may sound silly but I think it can be done ... competitively I mean.

R1 19
Move
Lair in NC
QC Ring of Beasts

R2 11+2
3x darkfenne Asp

R3 11+2
3x Darkfenne Asp

R4 11+2
3x Steelclaw Cub

R5 11+2
3x Steelclaw Cub

R6 11+2
Steelclaw Matriarch

Or you could go straight to cubs and have the first matriarch by R4.

Overall, I think having 6 Asps on board ( might be a bit much ) but would nevertheless be rather scary.
They can reduce any creature's amount of attack dice to 1 in just one round.
Very hard to kill the opponent when all your attacks roll no more than 1 die :)

Should be fun trying out.

The nice part about this book is that you can take more creatures to deal with necromancers. You aren't a using that many sbps to make your swarm

How Do you keep yourself alive vs High dmg Attack spells? Like fire adramlech

How Do you deal with Tanks that dont care about Weak. What you Do vs nonliving. An a tanky necro. A Single asp might Not be much spellpoints points, but 6 are

Make sure you have enough counters to armor. Opponents with 3+ armor and a veterans belt are basically immune to weak attacks. I would add multiple [mwcard=MW1J03]Tooth & Nail[/mwcard] totems in your book to make sure your little creatures can do damage.

In general, mana denial cards will wreck you! Especially [mwcard=MW1J21]Suppression Orb[/mwcard] and [mwcard=MW1J16]Mordok's Obelisk[/mwcard]. Expect your opponent to summon it on the opposite side of the board. You NEED to destroy it very fast or you will have lost. Especially wizards and forcemasters tend to use these cards. So, it's essential in your book to have a very solid counter against these cards.

Don't forget zone attacks. A single [mwcard=MW1A12]Ring of Fire[/mwcard] or even a [mwcard=FWA03]Hail of Stones[/mwcard] can destroy your entire army at once. I have experienced this myself (and used it myself).  :P

Slavorg! Every beastmaster swarm book needs him. I've summoned him for 3 mana once. (with a lair so 1 mana from my mage)

Like Mystery mentioned, you need a couple of rounds to set up. When you'll be rushed, you will have to spend mana and actions on armor and things like that.

Overall, I don't think an opponent will ever let you summon 3 creatures each round. You will be forced to spend actions and mana on other stuff. Every decent opponent has some ways to deal with swarms.

I'm aware of the difficulties a book like this might encounter and keeping the opposing mage's armor as low as possible is just one of the additional objectives, however this post was not meant to present a complete book but rather to help out Biblofilter in his search for a "Swarmmaster (3 creatures per round)" book to use in his Viking-con tournament.

I ran a similar book at Gencon 2016 and it did alright. you alternate between asps and darkfene bats for rot and weak.
The large creature problem is resolved by dropping bigger creatures when needed a Emerald Tegu as a pet makes a great guard or offensive creature to add to your rot pile.
Of the four rounds at gencon I went  2-2 and played Biblofilter (this years champion) in a freeplay game and took his necro down to 1 life before dying to a play mistake on my part.
The book isn't perfect (none are) and it has bad match ups where it gets wrecked( like Sharkbaits adramlech) but it is fun, and a solid contender. I am at work now but will try to post my build later.

I like the idea I would do this into creatures with a defense.

I think the bobcat has a dodge right?

You could also take advantage of the minor creature enchantments.

Borg- I think I've borrowed more of your ideas and books than any other person posting on this forum. Thanks for the creative ideas and approaches- it's also helped me think a little more outside the box with trying new and different things that maybe I've not considered.

Personally, I'm excited to try this with a bunch of tanglevines.

I sometimes run a similar book, to yours with a few variants.

#1: 10+9=19
-Move +Lair in NC
-Ring of Beasts

#2: 2+9=11
>Darkfenne Asp from Lair -2
-Fairy -4
-Cub -2 (with ring & fairy discount)

#3: 3+9=12
>Cub from Lair -2
-Cub -2 (with ring & fairy discount)
-Armor or Life Tree, something defensive (it depends on the mage your fighting)

Wash Rinse Repeat.

I like using the Cubs/Asp over the Cats because they last longer. The bats are good, but are easily destroyed. The Falcon's are great, the problem is that they are good against ground creatures, if your opponent builds flying creatures like the Blood Demon/Guard Angle your Falcon's are less useful.
I tend to scattere the Cub's to attack the Conjurations until the mother bear comes out.
When the enemy mage starts to pick off your small creatures, you can start making Mid size creatures and support then/curse the enemy. (use the Fairy, many people don't realize how OP she is.)

Thank you Ravepig, it's a nice surprise to read a post like that ;)
You're welcome.

@Werekingdom
Very good idea on the fairy, I think.
It isn't easy to fit her into a book but here she might be an excellent choice.

Try using wall of thorns and elephant grass in swarms.
Try to get double ring of beasts too.
Last but not least, use area effect support to maximize efficiency.

I hope I was helpful!

You are right. One ring of beasts then.
Also, cancel the mana denial against creatures with .
