Makunda, King of the Jungle
« on: August 28, 2016, 05:08:03 AM »
I never saw Makunda in play, so I really wanted to build a book around him. I don't think it's a good card, but that's besides the point.

My opening would consist of summoning makunda and advancing to the opponent while quicksummoning some small (pet) feral bobcats. From the mid-game on, I expect to be very action drained. From then on, I'll start summoning the more expensive Kumanjaran leopards. I don't have many ways to deal with armor because I mainly rely on the piercing of the cats. If tooth and nail is out with makunda, the kumanjaran leopard can use his doublestrike to the fullest. It is also elusive, thus will be able to hit the target.

Apart from the pet ability and maybe the lifetree, I don't plan on supporting the bobcats. If the opponent starts destroying them, I can cast Slavorg.

Some other specific cards:

- Tarok to protect the skies (and hinder)
- Force hammer and Galador for ethereal
- No cervere. Originally he was in the book, but I think the kumanjaran leopards fit better.

I have many doubts about enchanters ring. I'm not sure it is worth the action. Rouse the beast will also probably get cut.

Other than that, the build is pretty basic and can probably be improved a lot. Suggestions are more than welcome!

Sidenotes: I actually really wanted this to be a johktari build both thematically and for gameplay with wounded prey and the bow, but I need the quick summoning if I want to have more creatures to be boosted by makunda/tooth and nail. The second reason for more level ones is Slavorg. Lair + Makunda is an option, but probably too expensive and he will probably not see any play. The Johktari version would need to add a lair OR cut out all the bobcats (and maybe Slavorg)

This book is also OCTGN only since I sadly do not own the kumanjaran leopard. (I hope he will be in the lost Grimoire set)

I like thematic books and this one looks very nice!

My first impression is I would try to build it for Johktari. I have qute s similar one with dogs instead of cats.

So I would add the lair for spawning.
You have tons of enchantments. This cries for a fellela support. No enchanters ring then for sure.
I would change equipment for ranged attack specific. Hawkeye+bow with bleed+kajarah if needed work pretty good with a swarm.
Marked for death can boost the swarm a lot as well.

The lair will need a while to give you mana back for makunda. So first rounds will feel starved. Shooting is manasaving :)

Why 2 eagleclaw boots? I never feel they will get dissolved.

Thanks, I also have one for canine.   :) I also want this to be a johktari book and fellella is indeed a good addition, but I just don't think I'll ever have the mana for them and makuna + Leopards. The enchantments I would cast depend on the opponent/situation. I expect to cast maybe a third each game.

Marked for death was in it but cut out. I might add it again.

Eagleclaw boots are important against some opponents. But it's indeed more a card for the original Johktari to keep a good position to shoot the enemy. I could cut one maybe.

I really want makunda summoned the latest at round 3 or 4. If not, my cats will probably die and not benefit from him. Even with a lair, She only channels 11 mana per round. A bow is also not cheap!

A possible opening could be:
19 Lair (14) + Hawkeye (2) 3
12+2 Kajarah (3) + cat (5) + attack (reveal hawkeye 1, 4 dice) 5
14+2 cat (5) + enchantment (2) + attack 9
18+2 Makunda (17) + something (x)   (3-x)
I could not summon the cat in round 2 and summon Makunda in round 3.

Maybe looking at sharkbaits great catsby would give some ideas? It's a honorarium, but similar idea. Or listen to mage cast 7 to hear an in depth analysis of it. Overall seems like a solid and fun book.

You might consider swapping some of those Tooth & Nails for an Animal Kinship and Rajan's Fury.

I will only get elusive for kinship. Since I really depend on Makunda/tooth and nails for piercing and have no other means to deal with armor, I really need the tooth and nails. Rajan's fury is a great card, but when I have to battle a tank, with [mwcard=DNQ07]Veteran's Belt[/mwcard],  I really need all the piercing I can get.

I have played a few games against Sailor Vulcan and have tweaked the deck. (edited above)

Main change is the addition of the [mwcard=MW1J09]Temple of the Dawnbreaker[/mwcard]. With all the defences, some reroll is great. Also, I traded two of the Bobcats to lynxes. If the opponent is standing still, it might be better to have 1 extra piercing and pay 1 less mana.

It never really occurred to me to add more than 1 Tooth and Nail to stack piercing. Not a bad idea!

It's a classic trick for Beastmasters, especially for taking down conjurations
