Defense Wizard
« on: December 19, 2015, 07:52:15 AM »
So, I'va always played the wizard as it's my favorite mage. Recentrly I have come up with this combination. The tactic is pretty straight forward, throw everything the enemy throws at you back in their face. The only real issue i have had is not doing enough damage.

At first glance, I wonder whether you will ever use six Mana Crystals. Personally, I'd remove at least three of these. The four Reverse Attacks in particular seem excessive to me as well... especially since an unavoidable attack will negate their effect.

Also, I don't understand why the Grizzly is in there instead of, for example, a Hydra?

On Wizard's Tower: I can't imagine any situation when a Wizard wouldn't put at least one in his book. I would probably put in a Surging Wave and/or Jet Stream for the tower, but that is just my taste.

Wizard's Tower is always a great option, and particularly in an attack spell minded book like this. Perhaps even two, though it's a bit cheesey.

You might make space by taking out some Mana Crystals, Dissolves, Dispels and reverses. A second wand MIGHT be useful with so many attack spells. Perhaps Acid Ball to replace some dissolves.

Do you need two hides?

You may need to consider how to increase the number of actions per round you get. This is one way to increase your damage capability. If you still want to keep your creature count low, then consider creatures with Doublestrike or Triplestrike traits. You might also consider Arcane Staff for a weapon since you have an empty hand available for equipment.

Thunderbolt on an elemental wand can be nice if your opponent hangs back and tries to build an army. The 3 zone range is great to bring damage quickly across the arena while the Wizard's base channeling can pay for one attack per round.

I agree with the other suggestions regarding the number of copies you have for some of your defensive spells. They all require mana to cast and use which must come from the same mana pool you wish to use for attack. More importantly is the number of actions required to cast defensive spells when you want to be on the attack. Remember that mandatory reveal enchantements will all trigger on say one attack so stacking multiple defenses isn't very effective. You will need additional actions to replace a defense once it triggers which lowers your ability to attack where you want.

Unavoidable will ruin your day. A mage equipping up a Morning Star or using Attack Spells with the Unavoidable trait will mean you have wasted Actions binding these enchantments then just having to Discard them. It is very fun to Reverse Attack/Magic someone, you just have to time it and make it unexpected.
