They are not as the support for starting mana is not there. Also know that the rules for things such as Melee +1 and such are way different between Academy and Arena, and the OCTGN module currently only supports the Arena rule set for rule difference such as these.

I assume you mean programming rules. Because the game rules for Melee+1 are the same for both, aren't they?

Nope they are not the same, and that is what I was getting at.

Melee bonuses apply to all attacks in Academy and only the first attack action in Arena, correct? You can get the bonus twice in one full round of Arena if one is a counterstrike from a guard because those are two separate attack actions, but for the most part the Melee + bonus is a once per round thing while in Academy it exists multiple times in the same round.

Melee +X
The first time this creature makes a melee attack this round, that attack rolls +X additional attack dice. If a creature acquires multiple “Melee +X” traits, they are cumulative and all will increase its first melee attack.

Academy doesn't make a distinction between an "attack" and an "attack action."  It would seem that Doublestrike (e.g. Sailfin Hydra) can get Melee +X on both its attacks, since they're two steps inside one attack.

Doublestrike
This attack may make a second attack against the same target. The additional attack occurs before the Counterstrike Step of the attack.

The wording is rather terrible, as having an attack make an attack seems to generate an infinite loop of nested attacks...

Hmmm... I just realized that Pests are VERY different in Academy.  In Arena, Pests don't hinder and can be ignored when they are guarding.  But in Academy, not only can they be ignored when they're guarding, but when a Pest attacks a guard, the guarding creature doesn't have to lose its Guard token.  The guard can just ignore the pest - which means it won't counterattack either, but it can save its Guard marker for when another creature attacks.  Thus, a swarm of Pests (e.g. Steelclaw Cubs) might all have to attack the same guard.

Quote from: Mage Wars Academy rules, web version
Pest
A small nuisance creature. A Pest can be ignored. Creatures can ignore enemy Pests, who are guarding, to melee attack other targets. If a Pest makes a melee attack against a guarding creature, the guard can choose to ignore the Pest. If it does, the Pest attacks as normal, but the guard does not lose its guard marker and the guard cannot make a counterstrike against the Pest.

But this is a bigger part of the rule set:

Quote
A creature can protect other friendly creatures from melee attacks by guarding. If a creature chooses to guard for its action, place a guard marker on it.

When an enemy creature makes a melee attack, it must attack one of your guarding creatures (if you have one). Using guards is great way to protect your Mage!

Counterstrike
A creature who is guarding also gains the ability to counterstrike! If the creature has a quick action melee attack, that attack gains the Counterstrike trait. (Note that full action and ranged attacks cannot be used to counterstrike.)

Immediately after receiving a melee attack, a creature who has an attack with the Counterstrike trait (either printed on the card, or gained by guarding) can use that attack against their attacker. This attack is conducted just like a normal attack, following the steps outlined above.

Using a counterstrike is always optional. A creature does not have to use its counterstrike.

IIRC melee+x in Academy is once per round.
