Zombie-Demon as Bloodreaper?
« on: September 15, 2015, 05:24:50 AM »
While considering a Sectarus - Rise Again - combo, I was thinking about whether it could work to intentionally kill off your own Dark Pact Slayer Bloodreaper if he close to dying, and getting him back as a Zombie with Rise Again. Would it be possible to again make him your Bloodreaper in that case? I'd say yes as he's still a demon creature. Could even synergize with Ziggurat of Undeath then!

Requirements to be a Blood Reaper: Friendly, Non-Legendary, and has the Demon subtype, according to the card. Must be summoned either by the Warlock or a Spawnpoint that the Warlock controls, according to the Battlegrounds rulebook.

Obviously the creature in question met all these conditions the first time. Rise again doesn't change the fact that it is friendly, non-legendary, or a Demon, and the Official Rules and Codex Supplement clarifies that the Mage is still summoning the creature when it gets Reanimated. Thus, it definitely meets all of the requirements. You can certainly have a Zombie Blood Reaper if you would like.

It should be noted that a [mwcard=FWQ09]Sectarus[/mwcard] + [mwcard=DNE02]Rise Again[/mwcard] combo might not work as well as you may be thinking though. Sectarus has to deal damage before you can cast the curse. If that damage kills the creature, then there is no creature to cast Rise Again onto. Rise Again must be both in place and revealed before the creature dies in order to reanimate it (although you can wait until after the Roll Dice step before you reveal, it must be revealed before you Apply Damage and Effects).

Thanks for the warning! Indeed I overlooked the comment regarding the combo in the rules supplement. Perhaps in that case Animate Dead would be the better choice, even though it will cost you an extra full action. I still think it could work to cast Rise Again on enemy creatures early enough through Sectarus and have them return as zombies, starting a cascade with the Ziggurat or feeding them at the Sacrificial Altar.

I don't think it would work this way. Creature is destroyed when killed, so Bloodreaper would lose its marker.
Quote
Destroyed:
When an object is destroyed, everything attached to it is destroyed and discarded. This includes damage, condition markers, tokens, enchantments, and conjurations. Ability markers are returned to the Mage. Then, the object is placed in its owner’s discard pile.
But Reanimation summons creature, so You could make that creature Bloodreaper a bit later if it wasn't for this:
Must be summoned either by the Warlock or a Spawnpoint that the Warlock controls, according to the Battlegrounds rulebook.
Does reanimation counts as summoning by Warlock?

...and the Official Rules and Codex Supplement clarifies that the Mage is still summoning the creature when it gets Reanimated.

To help you further, this ruling can currently be found on page 21 of the Official Rules and Codex Supplement under the Reanimate section:

Quote from: Official Rules and Codex Supplement
Note that, unless it says otherwise, normally the Mage who controls the effect which grants Reanimation is the object summoning the creature into play.

So, you are correct that when the creature is destroyed it loses the Blood Reaper marker. The marker is returned to the Mage to be used at a later time when summoning a creature. However, it is entirely acceptable to decide to reuse the Blood Reaper marker when you reanimate the creature, as it does count as a summons by your Mage.
