« on: January 26, 2015, 08:56:32 AM »
We're back for another awesome Mage Wars Monday! Here in Episode #19 we look into how to build and play a control spellbook. You can find Episode #19 >>HERE<<. As always we love to hear from all of you! Please feel free to tell us whats good, whats bad, and what you'd like to hear!

PS. Before someone else mentions it, I know the app cannot be used on Phones yet. I live in a backwards world where I do not own a tablet sadly. :(

Metal Man is easily my favorite robot master. I had to contain my excitement when a game I enjoy announced they were adding him.

I am Sailor Vulcan! Champion of justice and reason! And yes, I am already aware my uniform is considered flashy, unprofessional, and borderline sexually provocative for my species by most intelligent lifeforms. I did not choose this outfit. Shut up.

Nope, oddly enough I don't play video games much anymore, other than D3. It's good stress relief to go kill a ton of demons.

It's been a Witch Doctor lately, but I started with a Monk. Once season 2 opens up I'm gonna build a Crusader.

I enjoyed this episode; it made me think about my Priestess. In that spellbook I play creatures and keep them alive while whittling down my opponent's threats until I can kill my opponent off. A Bridge Troll with 2+ Armor tokens is just a beast to kill, particularly if the Priestess has a Minor Heal prepared. Once I'm throwing ~30 dice/round, I can usually kill my opponent pretty quickly. Often you don't even need that many control spells in order to deal with enemy threats if you want to play a more controlling plan, you can use creatures to guard in order to protect yourself and to kill off their creatures. I'm not sure whether to call that control or board dominance, which is what I've been calling it, but it's control-ish regardless.

That strategy is attrition. You are hoping to wear your opponent down. It is definitely control. However it is a soft control. Instead of heavily restricting options or directly countering spells, you're making there general plan more difficut.

This remind me of a conversation I had with a few players about control. In Mage Wars you have the option between removing or denying. Removing would be your dispels and Hurl Boulders (Hopefully) while denying is like putting a tanglevine on a creature or casting a suppression Orb. In the latter example it might not prevent the problem in the long run but it may help now, spells like that might also get you ahead in actions.

I think there's a lot to talk about when it comes to control in Mage Wars, such as the various forms of control:
Board Control (Movement)
Damage Control (Having more dice on the field)
Mana Control
Action Control (Similar to damage)
And so on...

That may be getting too broad or specific for anyone's taste but Mage Wars is a complex game and there's a lot of fiddly bits to explore.
