Where are the girls?
« on: May 26, 2014, 10:51:36 AM »
As every afternoon, i was meditating in my room to reach Enlightenment. Suddenly i tought came into my mind:

Between all the humanoid like forces of Mage Wars, is there only 1 (!) girl ... the Royal Archer!

"Oh wait" you gonna say now "there is more". Yes, but i do not count the mages in here. The Archer is the only female creature.

What could a female do on the battlefield? Maybe fight? Yes, but of couse support the fighters. But even the clerics are male as far as i can see.

Why is that? ;)
Akiro, I have never prayed to you before. No one will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that one stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Akiro... so grant me strength! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

A lot of the creatures are androgynous or gender indeterminate. Such as animals, demons, undead, and of course dwarves. Who's to say whether they are male or female? When it comes to clearly female characters, they are indeed out numbered but not nearly to the degree you imply. As mentioned by Lord0fWinter the majority of Angels are female and all faeries are. Gorgon Archer, Screech Harpy, and Necropian Vampiress are also of the womanly type. I'm also pretty sure that all elves are female, though they may just be hard to tell apart in a manner opposite that of dwarves.

I still firmly believe the new Dwarven Warlord is a female :)

Untrue, as many have said.

You can tell which humanoid creatures are female because they're wearing ridiculously skimpy porno outfits instead of actual armour. That applies to the mages as well (with Druid the most egregious).

Sadly this is true of the majority of the obviously female characters. Not all of them though. The non-mage elves all seem fully dressed and well protected. Selesius is also well armored. The Necropian Vampiress isn't really armored, but she's not dressed immodestly either (in my opinion).

Then of course we have the creatures that are impossible to tell gender. They all seem dressed appropriately for their role in battle and you can just as easily imagine them as female as you can male. But the creatures that are obviously female, such as the mages, angels, and faeries, look dressed for seduction rather than battle. The mages don't really bother me a great deal, because the majority of my role playing games have emphasized mages preferring clothing that promoted mobility rather than protection so as not to interfere with their magics. I have no such excuse for the other critters however.

I will admit that I think scantily clad women are purty to look at, but the art should be a bit more egalitarian. Show more fully armored women and more half-dressed muscular men.

The real world doesn't put a lot of emphasis on the fighting prowess of females, but they most certainly are capable. Joan of Ark springs to mind. If we turn away from the real world and into the writings of fantasy, women are given an increased level of credit rather than less. Any assertion that women can not be formidable warriors is unfounded, although their limited numbers on the battlefield is historical.

I'm guessing he was being partially sarcastic? But I hardly see ranged attackers like the archer as any more "support" than melee attackers. That depends on the strategy. Of course, that's assuming that it wasn't just a thoughtless sexist remark.

I agree that their outfits are unpleasantly sexist, but I didn't think they were porno outfits. Do outfits worn in pornos typically look like that?

I am Sailor Vulcan! Champion of justice and reason! And yes, I am already aware my uniform is considered flashy, unprofessional, and borderline sexually provocative for my species by most intelligent lifeforms. I did not choose this outfit. Shut up.

I was exaggerating a bit, though I wouldn't be at all surprised if some of the outfits were very similar to actual porno outfits. Druid springs to mind.

Maybe it's that distinctive chest-thrust-out pose?  In North American culture, it's almost ***NEVER*** used for males, but quite often can be used for females...

Well honestly it is more the wardrobe appearance than anything else, looks like a dress. Other than Scotland that is not a typical clothing style for males North or South American. I find all of the objections, objectionable but that is just me and we don't need to spin this well tread ground yet again.

Oh yeah....

I think the fact that there is a female creature that isn't incredibly sexualized in MW right now is the most surprising thing I've seen all week.
