Wyrd Chronicles volume 11 - Signature Spells
« on: April 07, 2014, 04:17:51 PM »
In the most recent Wyrd Chronicles, I was given a chance to write a small strategy article about Mage Wars. I've been a big fan of Malifaux for some time now, and it was a really treat to be able to add content to their web magazine. You can find it >>HERE<<.

What are some of your Signature Spells?

Im also a big Malifaux fan (though Mage Wars is at the top of my playlist at the moment). It was great to see Mage Wars in the latest Wyrd Chronicles. Some good tips there for signature cards as well. Its always a bit of a challenge to work out whether to have a 'toolbox' spell book or focus on a particular strategy and hope the other mage can't counter it. My favourite signature spell has got to be [mwcard=MW1I28] Teleport [/mwcard]. Especially when loaded into a wand !

Force Hammer. I probably use it more than anyone else in my play group. I load it on a wand and just get to smashing stuff. Also Surging Wave, I love to cast it late game when my opponent is trying to get away from my forces if they don't have Eagle Claw Boots on.

Maybe I should change my name to Slam Master B....

What we must all remember is no matter the game we were all newbies at one point.

Yea, of all the spells I listed Force Hammer is the most signature for me. Unless I'm trained in Earth, it will be in my book. Glad to see you guys enjoyed the article!

My signature spell is Fireball. If enemy mage has 8 hp or less, he can be sure he will get one in the face as a finisher.

What Mages do you normally play? Do you try to work a Fireball in on Mages like the Beastmaster or Druid?

I usually play Warlock, but I indeed has a Fireball in my Beastmaster spellbook. Costy but people don't expect it and so many things has Flame +X. Nothing put more stress than a Burn token when you are at 1-2 hp left.

My favorite all time finisher is [mwcard=FWA04]Hurl Boulder [/mwcard] nothing IMHO beats this spell the end the game. I prefer to carry two in all my books but if I have to I will carry only one. 8 mana for 7 dice is very sweet.

I also enjoy the Fireball as a signature spell. I've looked at it and I do think that Hurl Boulder makes a better finisher....but some people just like to watch the world burn. Besides, Fireball doesn't do much less damage up front, and will usually do more damage in the long run (if the finisher fails, but that's not really what you want to happen with a finisher).

I also like Agony a lot. I've even put it in my Priest book at one point. It's not in it right now, but it may be again in the future. It's just so nice against Forcemaster and other multi-attack opponents.

I prefer Fireball over Hurl Boulder because if opponent still has armor, the burn bypass that.

And yeah, burn baby burn...

Too much elemental resistance out there to make this worth while, Dragonscale Hauberk + Elemental Cloak makes this a two die attack with a 8+ for a single burn.  Even with a Fireshaper Ring it is still a 3 dice attack. Same equipment above makes the Hurl Bolder ... a 7 dice attack.

And while you are doing that I have cast Nullify/Reverse Magic, and I now bang on you with a Hurl Boulder or I do my best to keep you two zones away to prevent the Dissolve for being able to target my mage.

Like I would to dissolve without Decoying you first...

I think we've covered the ways those two spells are similar yet different. I think we'll just have to drop it that some people prefer one or the other. Otherwise we'll end up talking in circles for days.
