snatch and guard
« on: November 23, 2013, 11:37:09 PM »
If a creature with the guard token is snatched into Thornlasher's zone, does it get to make a counterstrike attack?  i assume the answer is yes because the "damage and effects" step triggers the snatch.  Thus, when the "counterstrike" step happens, the thornlasher is a legal target for a melee counterstrike.

Am i reading this correctly?

Counterstrikes can only be trigger by Melee attacks.

Since the Thornlashers "snatch" attack is a 0-1 Ranged attack, it never triggers a Counterstrike even if used at range 0.

You do end up in the same zone as the Thornlasher, and thematically I could see you then making a counterstrike against it as the idea is that it has grabbed ahold of you, but mechanically you can not. Counterstrike only works against melee attacks. The Thornlasher's attack is a ranged attack and therefore never triggers a Counterstrike.

The rules for Counterstrike begin on page 27 of the Rulebook v2.0

Counterstrikes are against melee attacks. Thornlasher makes a ranged attack. Therefor no, you would not get to counterstrike.

Thorn lasher makes a ranged attack so no you can't use counterstrike or a damage barrier

The damage barrier is an important point that the rest of us left out.

A creature with the Intercept while on guard, could use its Defensive roll to avoid the Ranged Attack though.

Could an interceptor "intercept" a thornlashers attack and if failed a dodge roll would the interceptor get pulled or the original target

Intercept allows you to redirect the Thornlasher's attack to the guarding creature with Intercept. If you do this, then the guarding creature with Intercept becomes the target of the Thornlasher's attack, and is the one to take damage and be snatched by that attack.

Intercept does not allow you to avoid the Thornlasher's attack. You have to have a Defense that applies to ranged attacks in order to avoid it.
