How would MW look in real life
« on: September 03, 2013, 12:25:17 PM »
I've been talking with some friends about how MW would look in real life.

For example, how big would the arena be?
If each zone would be 10 by 10 meters, then it would take something like 10 steps to move a zone.

so, being this the case, how long would it take to move a zone?
Moderate walking should be about 100 steps/minute. at this speed, 10 steps would take 6 seconds.
If we add it the time needed to start moving, let's make it 8 seconds.

The second movement would take only another 6 seconds. So, 14~15 seconds for a full action sounds very likely.

What do you think about this?

I think this is really silly.

The Zones has room for 25 creatures or more - no matter their size (grizzly should be big by definition).
So that's a big zone right?

Still an archer cant target an enemy creature in its own zone, while at the same time a restrained creature can still reach and melee attack an enemy within the same zone.
Small zone now?

Its never going to make sense, and it doesn't matter.

Clearly it's a magic arena Smack. It must have spacebending properties and non-euclidean geometry. I would also note that creatures in this arena are magically compelled to move only in straight-lines! (i.e. not diagonally from one zone to another).

This concept just got a lot more interesting to think about ^_^. Perhaps the mage lords or arena masters who craft the arena set all of this up through the use of embedded enchantments charged by mana crystals.

Now I'm imagining trying to play Mage Wars in the corridors and rooms from Antichamber. That would be confusing.

Really, you could say anything if you factor in time.

Maybe a duel takes weeks- and everything seems fast pace in the game, but if it was real life- summoning takes a day- or hours.

Maybe the arena is huge, but when your creature is moving to a zone- its actually running across the arena for 30 minutes.

Time keeping is a huge deal in D&D, so with this game- being "more" of a role-playing game then say MtG- I think its a valid question/idea.

It would be kind of fun to have a mock version of this game that you could play "for real".  I can't think of the name of it but there is something like Hero's Quest or something like that.

When I did it you buy a wand and as you point at or do different "quests" it interacts with you and there are creatures, etc etc you try to kill and you walk around a space sectioned off in rooms etc.  No it isn't "real life" it is play but being IN the Mage Wars arena even a mock would be kind of a fun idea.

I was trying to talk Bryan into getting some "tastefully dressed" women cosplay and larp MW.  :P

I wrote about this very topic.

Unfortunately, it probably won't be possible for many years. The game requires the spells, which means you need the cards. And then how would you deal with summoning creatures, casting equipment and conjurations? And enchantments? You would need virtual reality goggles and a tablet for pretty much everything.
