General Discussion / Re: Laid back or aggressive?
« on: October 02, 2012, 07:42:29 AM »
I'm not exactly sure why.  The holy creatures seem to have a bit more of the "take on all comers" feel to me.  Coming from a tournament mini's background that is very attractive.  I do not have a lot of games under my belt (three now) but healing spells seem to be more mana efficient then resummoning.  The Priestess herself getting ehaled without having to waste the card on it gives her a bit more attrition built in.  I've found that she has the "most hit points" since there are very few things in the game that can one or two round a mage.

Who knows, I may end up making a Warlock equip build or something and falling in love with it.  For now though I think the preistess is going to be my "first love".

I am normally a very aggressive and in your face player.  I would have thought, before playing, that the Warlock was my style.  After playing and studying the cards, I believe I may be a Priestess player at heart!

Heya all,

I just wanted to throw out a link to the review I just wrote up on the game.  Hopefully some new blood checking out the game sees this and it is helpful to them :)

(spoiler: the review is pretty positive)

General Discussion / Re: Looking for a little disclosure
« on: September 28, 2012, 11:58:25 AM »
Arcanus - I am relieved that you guys realize your current marketing/packaging mechanic isn't up to what all players would desire.  As players, we realize that it may take some time to affordably get all the cards but, if we know it's in the works, waiting is a decent option.

I would personally vote against an online singles store.  Every dollar I spend online is one less dollar I spend in my FLGS.  Who is promoting gaming in my area?  The FLGS promotes play and host events.  If I spend less money there then I feel like, as a player, I am ripping them off.  If there is something they can order (a new spell tome for instance) then I am more likely to buy it through them.

I think it's cool that you are looking at different ways to off set the cost for different players.  I think both a second spell tome (and third and so forth until you get everyone) and a mage specific tome are good ideas.  What I want, as a player, is a way to get all the cards I need to possibly build every deck without getting extras of cards I don't need.  As it stands now you printed 5 blocks in the base set and then 2 in the Spell Tome.  There is already one card I own that I have no use for.

Is it more economical for you as a company to squeeze all of Dark Magic(as an example) in to one package?  I am fairly new to the game so I am not positive on all the distributions of cards through out the sets and how many are missing from each school of magic in order to make completely full sets.

This would be cool for a league certainly.  I am sure you could come up with an Organized Play format where each round you upgraded.  Cool idea :)

I dropped it in to word, cleaned the formatting for word and then put it up on Google Docs.  Feel free to download it.  I didn't know about the errata when I did it so sad face for me.  Is the errata in a list shad0w?

btw, it's still 13 pages!

That's awesome shad0w.  I was actually going to type that all out today and make some copies for demos and such.  You just saved me oodles of time!

Player Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Card distribution in future products

That's one way to go.  They will probably not get much more money from me if they continue in that vein.  In deck building games, if you do not have access to all fo the cards available you are at a disadvantage as the meta changes.  I don't need 14 copies of a card I can't play.  Therefore I will probably play the core set and spell tome and never buy another Mage Wars product again.

The resounding stance by the LCG players of FFG's products has shown that the market also swings the way my personal feelings do.  They evolved their marketing strategy to fit what made sense to players in order to make money.  My fear would be that Mage Wars wouldn't and thus become a game that ends up not making it.

While, in idea, that sounds cool, I don't need another mage that comes with 6 more copies of Block.  I bought the starter set and the spell tome and already have 7 copies, more then I can use in a deck.  If the game goes the way of paying for cards you don't need then it might as well go with a CCG format as a lot of players like myself just won't pay time and time again for cards that are useless copies.

In order to get max copies of a card right now you need 4 sets of the core set IIRC.  That's 240 bucks.  Not only that but then you end up with 20 copies of Block.  What do you do with the other 14?  Make them coasters?

General Discussion / Best mages to start with?
« on: September 27, 2012, 09:49:16 AM »
I am looking to show off this game to a buddy of mine.  He is a veteran board gamer, mini's gamer and card gamer so I was going to jump straight in with the preconned decks from the rule book instead of doing an in person version of the video tutorial.

Which two decks do you believe match up best?

Which two decks are the easiest to use?

Which two decks are best to teach the game with?

Thanks!

My assumption was that, if it were packaged this way, people would generally buy most sets so they would not need to reprint dispel or nullify.

Do the box sets need to be ready to play?  Magic has some but their general release sets are not ready to play and they seem to do ok.  I know I personally would purchase the Warlord set if it came with all his new weapons and minions and I had to add in my own common spells from the base set.

One reason FFG changed their LCG format to include maximum copies of each new card released was because they were losing players who got frustrated with buying multiple sets only to have max copies of one card and 3 times the max on other cards from that same set.

I realize that FFG has enough money and production costs behind them that they can do a different release model.  I personally enjoyed when they moved to the new format.  I would rather see less cards per set but the ability to max out in every set purchased.  I have not spent any less money on LCG's since the change.  I was even ok with the copies of cards that weren't useful to the types of decks I built.

I would strongly suggest moving towards this kind of model with future releases!
