Don't let you opponent Wizard play with Akiro's Hammer, it's Warlord Only.

Yeah, Ichthalid's not very good if you only have one. I get that it's a poison condition for the enemy mage, but if you're not willing to hit enemy creatures with it, gets very awkward.

Rules Discussion / Re: chain lightning and walls
« on: January 24, 2016, 10:06:30 PM »
Measuring range for attacks from Walls makes me grumpy. >:(

Consider the following layout, with zones labeled W,X,Y,Z and the wall in red.
[W][X]|[Y][Z]

You, a mage in zone W, can cast Chain Lightning at the wall, because chain lightning has a range of 0-1, and zone X, which the wall borders, is a distance of 1 zone away. Likewise, a mage in zone Z could cast Chain Lightning and hit the wall because of the distance of zone Y. So... it kinda stands to reason that Chain Lightning can be cast from W at the Wall, and then hit a target in Z on the first hop.

Well, ok, maybe.

Attacking Walls
A creature in either of the zones bordering a wall may make a melee attack against that wall. Ranged attacks may target a wall if either of the adjacent zones is in range, and the wall is in LoS. Walls do not occupy a zone, and are not affected by Zone Attacks or spells that target a zone.

Note that you never actually check that a wall is in range of a ranged attack, only that one of the two adjacent zones is. And there's nothing written about attacks where the wall is the source.

COUNTING DISTANCES
When a creature moves, or when you make an attack, you will need to count distance across the arena. The distance, or “range,” is always counted from one adjacent zone to another (only horizontally and vertically, never diagonally).

Sooo.... range is always counted from one adjacent zone to another. There's no legal way to count range for an attack from a zone border.

Now, this is pretty clearly an oversight, and as far as I know, it only effects one card, Chain Lightning.

Basically, it comes down to this:
Can you hit a wall with a 0-0 ranged attack if you're in an adjacent zone? (Yes.)
Can a wall hit anything other than itself with a 0-0 ranged attack?

The available choices right now are either that 0-0 can't hit anything if it comes from a wall, or that a wall in the center of the long edge of the board is only 1 zone from either of that edge's corners. Neither of these are great options, but for now, for attacks where a wall is the source, I believe the rule is that you have to count as if the first zone is at range 1, if for no other reason than that the wall is not in the target's zone, so can't hit it with a range 0-0 attack.

Zombified Animals in Arena could fail to trigger Vampiric, I guess?

Vampiric (Attack Trait) When this attack causes damage to a Living creature, the attacker heals (removes) up to half the damage caused (round up). If the attack does more damage than the target’s Life total, the excess damage does not count for healing. If the attack makes multiple attacks during the same attack action, it gains this bonus only for the first attack it makes. The Vampiric trait does not stack. If an attack places a condition on a creature which counts as damage (such as the Tainted conditon), the conditon does not count as damage dealt by the attack. Therefore, it will not count as damage dealt for the Vampiric Trait.

Looks like it doesn't change anything.

Since it is not available in the database, here is the effect text of the two cards:
Quote from: Joined Strength
This creature gains Melee +1. Whenever it is attacked and receives damage you must transfer 1 of that damage to your mage instead. If this creature is destroyed you may pay 1 mana to move Joined Strength to a new target in your zone.
Quote from: Rod of the Arcanum
When this attack damages an enemy Non-Mage creature, that creature's controller loses 1 mana (if he has any to lose). If this Mage is level 5 or higher, Rod of the Arcanum rolls an additional attack die.

The wording is a little funny on Joined Strength, which may be confusing matters. Hypertechnically, it's weird to transfer damage instead. Previously, you could transfer damage that had been dealt, like Lifebond +X does in Druid's Treebond ability, or you could perhaps redirect an attack or its damage like Reverse Attack does, but it does seem a bit strange to use the verb "transfer" this way.

But the key, as others have said, is the word "instead". In that context, Joined Strength transfers one damage to the mage, instead of letting the attack deal it to the creature. It's not even clear to me that the rules do (or do not) consider that damage "dealt" or even caused by the attack. It may just be damage transferred from an attack to a mage.

Lets say i spend 12 mana on some creature (casting cost and enchantements). I attacked first and after its activation, i cast sanctuary. Now my heavy creature is safe, my oponent need to target something else.

I think you are mistaken. When you attack with a creature it makes it inactive. If you reveal Sanctuary afterwards you will remove an inactive creature from the board. Since Dissipate token is removed during Upkeep Phase which is after Reset Phase, on your next turn the creature you bring back will be still inactive and will not be able to attack again. Correct me if I'm wrong.

As far as I know, unless the card says otherwise, creatures teleported out of the arena still reset their action markers. They're not in a zone anymore, but they're still creatures with activations, damage, etc.
