My Druid made plant-food out of the wizard in my last match-up.  ;)

We definitely need to give the Forcemaster more play time. I have yet to try her myself.

General Discussion / Mage Type Win/Loss Record
« on: April 14, 2016, 09:54:10 AM »
We've been playing mage wars for a little over a month now and I'm curious if our mage win/loss record is a statistical representation of my veteran mage peers:

(win-loss-draw) *draws were called after playing so long without a clear winner and had to stop due to time-constraints

Druid 2-0-1 (draw with the wizard, though had a slight upper hand at time of the draw)
Wizard 3-0-1 (draw with druid)
Necro 1-0-1 (draw with the priest- at time of draw if was very even)
Force master 1-0-0 (close match with Warlord)
Beast Master 1-1
Warlord (0-2-0) these losses were very close, so I don't know that these are as concerning as the Warlock losses.
Priest (0-1-0) Loss to Necro
Priestess (1-2-1)
Warlock (0-3-0) these losses were drastic and the one that surprises us. Maybe it's because we're noobs, but nobody in our group can seem to get the warlock going.

Are these numbers fairly statistically representative of others? Suggestions on playing a successful warlock welcome!

Strategy and Tactics / Re: Help against Purge Magic
« on: April 13, 2016, 10:11:36 PM »
Some random thoughts to help get around Purges...

1-2 Enchanters Wardstones makes Purge Magic really expensive.  Unplayable expensive in some cases.

Playing a Jinx at the right time can also botch his attempt to purge you, if his first spell that he is trying to waste gets Jinxed, it never gets to burn your Nullify and you've kinda ruined his round.  In fact, just toss out Jinxes all the time him because its annoying.

Another option is to not to directly rely on stacks of enchantments and draw buffs from other sources like incantations and equipment mixes with only a couple enchantments.  Things like Hand of Bim Shalla can buff you without being directly purge-able for example.  Or, have a couple creatures to share your buffs over.  When doing a beatdown sort of Warlock I like to do a tag team of some upper-middle tier creatures like Necropian Vampiress and a Dark Pact Slayer or Blood Demon to make a reaper to share buffs over so that no one Purge Magic can wreck everything.

You can also toss out debuffs/curses on the opponent as you buff yourself... try to get him to spend his Purge Magic to knock off a stack of curses instead of your buffs.

These are good tips and exactly how I reworked my book. I plan to add a few solid creatures, buff the small group up and then head out to battle.

Just to be clear- Purge Magic removes all hidden and revealed enchantments. Enchantment Transfusion allows me to move all my enchantments to another legal creature. So, is this a matter of timing? Meaning, I need to cast Transfusion PRIOR to when I think my opponent is going to cast Purge Magic, OR can I reveal Transfusion during the counter spell step? I'm assuming it's a guessing game as the way I read the rules/card text, purge magic would also remove Transfusion. Is this correct?

General Discussion / Barbarian vs. Sorcerer
« on: April 13, 2016, 10:03:26 AM »
Some dude at Boardgamegeek posted the following:

"As others have mentioned (including Aaron, who's the lead designer), Paladin vs Siren is coming soon, albeit it's already long overdue. And there have been rumours (from Bryan Pope) that beyond that we can expect to see an alt-Wizard vs alt-Forcemaster (similar to Conquest of Kumanjaro and Forged in Fire), followed by a Barbarian vs Sorcerer. And the next Battlegrounds expansion is rumoured to be an Archmage (hinted at in Domination; probably a one-vs-many format). And they plan to release more mage types for Academy in the future (e.g. Forcemaster, Warlord, Druid, Necromancer, Paladin, Siren, ...)."

Barbarian vs. Sorcerer sounds awesome!

Enchantment Transfusion is a good idea!

Did not even think of Enchanter's Wardstone. That's a good idea. Likely would still purge magic, but definitely at a much higher cost.

I'm still trying to figure out the strategy/benefit of Arcane Ward other than attaching to an item to protect against crumble. That's what's interesting: Dissolve targets mage, but crumble targets equipment. Most of my opponents stick with dissolve, so what's the value of Arcane Ward?

Strategy and Tactics / Help against Purge Magic
« on: April 12, 2016, 10:07:10 PM »
Here is the scenario of what happened in my Arena Match tonight: I had my Warlock buffed fairly well with Enchantments. I had three nullifies, one Reverse Magic and one Arcane Ward in my book. What my opponent did was use his QC to cast dissolve, which he knew he was wasting- dissolve's target says Mage, so it automatically triggers Nullify, which then freed him up to use his action to cast Purge Magic which removed all my enchantments. I can't place both Nullify AND Reverse Magic at the same time, because one spell would trigger both making one pointless.

How can I counter this tactic for future reference???

Rules Discussion / Re: Thornslasher and bloodspine wall

Wow! So we can snatch from another zone even thru firewall then?
Wall of fire blocks line of sight, so thorn lasher cannot see his target to try for a snatch.

Ah, ok- that makes sense!

Rules Discussion / Re: Three Rules Clarifications
« on: April 10, 2016, 10:29:30 PM »
1) yes. Your Mage counts as a friendly creature

2) no limit

3) both must be revealed because they have mandatory triggers.  Once both turn up you can choose which you want to pay for and use, then the other just fizzles away (or both if you don't want to pay mana for either reveal)

Thank you!!!

Rules Discussion / Three Rules Clarifications
« on: April 10, 2016, 09:11:00 PM »
My apologies in advance- this is my second post regarding rules. But I do appreciate the help. Three more clarifications:

1) Does the Enchanter's Ring work when casting an enchantment on my own mage? I ask because the text says, "Friendly Creature?"

2) With sunfire amulet (and other Life + buffs), is there a maximum life a mage can have or does it just keep increasing indefinitely?

3) If I have Nullify and Reverse Magic on my mage at the same time, does an Incantation or Enchantment spell cast against my mage trigger both effects, or do I just choose which one to save the other for a future attack? I'm assuming yes because of the red reveal?

Again, thank you for the help!

I'm assuming it's perfectly legal to use the Thornslasher to snatch an enemy from one zone away through a bloodspine wall without taking damage?
