While I do think it's good to at least have some realization that this may be a possiblity, using the half of a game that I recorded as the only evidence right now is NOT what I would consider proper testing methods. I still think that there were multiple times that if vulcan had cards that weren't restricted to JUST the core set then he'd have won the game. There were also cards IN the core set that I'd have used that he did not and still more ways to come up with to have combated the Wizard in Warlock's clothing that would have done the warlock better. When you use EVERY card available + PROMOS vs someone with ONLY ONE CORE SET there is BOUND to be a difference. Player skill can help mitigate some of this, but you're still playing with one arm behind your back.

All I'm saying from all of this, is that using this recording as the only piece of evidence on either side of any argument that a wizard can warlock better than a warlock can is irresponsible from a testing perspective and leads to knee jerk reactions

Agreed. While I have not seen the match, I also believed there was a build issue at play too. So, the immediate jump to a conclusion is just wrong here. It is a bad conclusion. And again the chorus of change, change, change. More time and tournaments are needed. Along the same time aw will be releasing more products which will include bumps for the lower tier mages.

THIS JUST IN! It turns out that the wizard can do everything an arraxian crown warlock does just as well as an arraxian crown warlock, if not better. Yes, you heard right. A wizard that's pretending to be a warlock is equal to the real thing if not better. And a wizard that isn't pretending to be a warlock is even better than that.

I just had a really fun epic duel with the gen con champ on OCTGN. He was using his fake warlock against my real one. Other than the one main play mistake I made all game and the fact that I got terrible rolls, we were actually fairly evenly matched.

The wizard should not be able to warlock just as well as or better than a warlock. I think this counts as conclusive evidence that the wizard is OP. While I was using core set x1 only arraxian crown warlock, core set x1 only is not a big enough disadvantage to explain how his imitation-warlock was able to put up such a good fight and win against my real one.

You can watch the awesome fight here:

http://www.twitch.tv/carcharodonmega/v/10684198

so how does pretty evenly matched translate to wizard is op? i would expect warlock and wizard to be close most of the time. also, given you both pay double for each others school, the only book advantage is whatever holy spells the wiard puts in. expecting that to be a small number of levels there is only a 3-6 pt book difference.  again even match all other things being equal. so how does evenly matched imply wizard is a better warlock? an epic fun match in no way implies you got slaughtered. so again, how does that mean op? will try to watch this link at some point when i have time to see how you arrive at this conclusion. but my impression right off is that it is an incorrect conclusion, especially based on one game.

I think that the no time limit would not be much of an issue. The finals did not last very long on day 2. And I just found your wizard thread, and will continue this discussion there. I felt the heat during our match indeed. I still have the sunburns.

Regarding the statistics for tournament play.  I think the first real event back in 2013 Bashcon, a warlock won. Origins 2013 saw a priestess win, I was in that game playing for first place with a forcemaster. That event is the reason why hob, and tol got errata. Gencon 2013, an earth wizard won, and I was playing for first place then too, and was playing an air wizard.

Not sure what won origins 2014, and 2015. Last gencon of course a bm won. and a water wizard won this year.

It would be nice to get more data on wins in other events. The assessment regarding group think is valid too. If in many local groups, the best player happens to play wizard and beats everyone, they presume wizard is unbeatable. I do think there is not enough data to confirm any conclusions at this point.

I do not think that among the top tier mages: wizard, warlock, necro that any one consistently wins against the others. No mage is unbeatable, and there is no such thing as an unbeatable build for any of the mages. All mages in the hands of experienced players are dangerous to play against. Especially if they also built those mages spell books.

I just found this thread. I just mentioned about the wizard under the gencon discussion thread. I agree with a lot of what has been said here. I do not think the wizard is over powered, or needs any changes. I also agree that we should not make a bunch of his spells novice. As is mentioned, nullify is not in every book, but dispel is in many. They just release a new dispel for academy which may prove useful to some. So, changes are happening over time as is normal.

I think tweaking should not happen to any of it at this point. A bm won gencon last year, and the tower was out then too. So, any given day anything can happen.

I cannot agree enough that it is the player, not the mage. However, that said, some mages are better than others. You cannot create true parity with mages who have different flavors and uniqueness. It is bound to happen some are better than others. However, you can try to minimize the disparity between them. I suspect that over time, the ones on the bottom rungs will get improved. PVS cannot do anything but help the wizard since it will round out the water element. But, hopefully the wizard will become somewhat static, while other mages get some new tools as other sets are released.

I almost lost to sharkbait in our match. He was hyper aggressive and it was a chore to weather that firestorm. I probably was lucky he did not off me along the way. I managed to turn the corner on him and fight my way back. And he did not have a tower, playing the fire sorceress.

Agreed on the delay for time win. I think that consideration should be given to scoring for tourneys. The tie should count for less than outright kills. maybe 1 or 2 points for each player, rather than 3 and 1. Perhaps to give the slower builds a chance, the rounds should be slightly longer 90 or more minutes. And maybe finals should be untimed single elimination. No tie win, play until one player is killed. That would force players to build for wins rather than ties. I had thought a priestess with tons of healing would be a real challenge in the timed game.

I also agree that the wizard discussion was not in every interview, but it did stand out to me when I saw it. So thought I would address the so called elephant in the room. I do agree the wizard is very powerful. However, I believe same can be said for necro, and warlock. And put any of those in the hands of experienced players, and they become an even more difficult challenge. I know Steve who won a few years ago made it a goal to win with a different mage each year.  His builds are always a challenge.

One thing I noticed from watching the awesome interviews that the AD folks filmed at gencon was the over emphasis on wizard and asking about whether we believe the wizard is over powered. While I have not kept up on the forums and have probably missed most of the conversation surrounding this topic, I would like to put in my $.02 without dredging up a bunch of conflict.

There were only 5 wizards at the tourney, not half the field. If just playing pure random, at least one wizard likely makes it to the finals. I played a wizard, not so much because I feel he is the most powerful in the game, it is because I like wizards generally. I am very comfortable playing a wizard. He certainly is a top tier mage, and therefore very competitive. I believe that necro, and original warlock are also top tier. With priestess, and original bm in the next tier. Followed by fm, and everyone else. The priest, and johktari at the bottom.  The top 4 were: 2 wizards, a priestess, and a fm. That is a decent mix. Had the initial field been larger, I would have expected to see some warlords and more warlocks, and a couple more necros. Who knows what the top would have looked like then? It is true if more folks play wizards, then more will make the finals just on sheer numbers. Same can be said for any mage. It is interesting to note that there were not so many swarming mages in the field. That surprised me. It was refreshing to see that folks did not just copy previous success and field clones, and instead brought their own creations. That was great to see. You do not get that in mtg competitions. Where everyone buys the current deck of the week, and you end up fighting yourself a dozen times over. How boring.

Further, I also believe that any mage in the hands of an experienced player has a better chance too. I would think that several players in the tourney could field a well crafted non top tier mage and still have a decent shot at the final day. I even mentioned in my interview with the AD crew that more plays matter. It gives you more experience encountering or formulating tactics. Over the long run, you will be able to handle more situations and have a firmer grasp of what to prep when it matters most. When is it time to break off an attack run to handle something the opponent has done, or to perhaps heal yourself some? In a timed game those decisions are magnified. More games with experienced players makes an even bigger difference because you may be challenged more often or quicker.

I am not trying to open a new can of worms here, but it was just a topic that I saw recur in the interviews which implied that the film crew were trying to get folks to say or confirm that wizards are broken somehow. I think that over time other mages will get benefits from cards along the way to elevate them rather than fall prey to the chorus chanting nerf nerf nerf. The constant rulings on cards and outright bans on cards right after print in mtg was a huge turnoff for most of my friends and I, and large part of the reason we quit the game. It meant that wotc really did not do its testing correctly and implied that it was just churning out shoddy product so fast just to make a buck, rather than trying to maintain a quality game. Really what is the point of buying something if you have to constantly look on some website just to see what the cards really do?  However the fact that they are still printing money may mean that they finally got that under control. I just would hate to see the same thing in yet another great game.

I am sure over time, the other mages will get their status elevated along the way. There will always be top tier mages, and bottom feeders. Which ones those are will morph over time. But the stark difference between the top and the very bottom should compress over time so there are not so many levels between them. And then the matches will be more often decided with the better tactics winning (on average - discounting getting diced) rather than which mage is being played.

Round 3: Weighted Training Clothes vs. Tim McCurry's Wizard(Earth)

Because I sat next to him and he played James, who lost a close match due to a few misplays by 1 damage, I had a general idea what I was walking into. Last year he played a very similar book which I was also able to beat. He typically opens fast on B3 in turn two with a Wizard's Tower, lots of Hurl Boulders, Force Push through Wall of Thorns, and Jet Stream also on tower. Before the tournament James and I decided that if anything was able to beat us when using the attack opening it was Wizard and almost a guaranteed loss to a good Priestess.

Because Tim had played against the book already I decided to bite the bullet and take off the weighted training clothes, using the gate opening. After having such a close game against James, Tim opted for a different strategy, using a slower opening against me. As soon as this happened I pretty much knew I had won, even though Tim is a great player, you aren't going to beat Gate to Voltari if you let me sit around for the first four turns. Tim opened up with a T1 Iron Golem and Mana Crystal while I used Gate to Voltari and all my +channeling gear to reach 16 channeling. As Iron Golem was moving in I also used Essence Drain on it. So it was his eight channeling vs. my 17-19 channeling, as well as him not running Jinx. Nothing much exciting happened during this match because I just got so far ahead in channeling. I Jinx'd him out of the game with a Gargoyle Sentry for guards. I didn't take any damage this match.

I had indeed played against is friend and fellow playtester James in round 1 of the qualifier day. It was a very challenging game. I had not played against jinx hardly ever. So working around it took some mental gyrations. It was a mental game that took a toll on me. I was able to stay focused this year and played well mostly. We went to time, and due to allowing for equal turns, I managed to win on the very last turn. He had me down on life near death twice if I recall. I managed to heal up enough (thank you Renewing Spring!) which gave me just enough to stretch for it at the end. I do not recall whether the rolls were over or under, so given that, I feel it was likely that it was average for the game. He may have better recall of it, as my recollection was jinxed and I got those brain cells back blank. And I think I only barely got him on damage, exactly equal to life remaining, just enough for the outright kill. Despite his healing up on 2 heals and a minor heal for an additional 25-27 points of life. Had to do almost double life total to end the match.

I mention the above for why I played very differently against Nick on round 3. Given the mental drain on round 1, I was not looking forward to a repeat. I have multiple ways to play the book, and chose to play differently, not wanting to reveal too much and not wanting to play the same as I would for the finals. I felt that I was playing very well, and that I was likely to make it into day 2. Not realizing that it was going for 5 rounds on day 1, and that it was not a lock. That was bad on my part. But believing that I was going to make it into day 2 is why I did not want to play the same game as I played in round 1. Nick is a tremendous player, and I did not want to give him any forewarning on how I would play in a finals match. Regardless, I did not think that our match was a must win for me. Again stupid on my part. I know. I did believe that both of us were very likely to make it to day 2. I felt confident in my play and book, and Nick is a great player with a strong book too. So, just figured we would both be making it.

So, wanting to see if the other facets of my build would fare better or worse for the finals is why I played the way I did in this match. Bringing out creatures, and trying have them help me beat down the guards etc. Well, turns out that it sucked large. But it gave me valuable insight on what not to do during a potential finals match. I think Nick got advance info from James on what to expect, and I presented something different, but it was clearly less effective.

I was not looking forward to another match up, as I knew it would be close. My insights from the qualifiers is why I went heavy aggressive in the finals, which he was expecting. We both knew exactly what to expect from each other for our finals match. I do like that we could not change our books. That made the qualifiers very important, and relevant. We both made some great plays in the finals match. I stretched for the win, came up short. Prepared for another shot at the end, which he deftly avoided. Great competitor, great match. Great tournament. Congrats again Nick.

I beg to differ. My wizard was very aggressive. I only slowed a touch to try to keep the temp on my side expecting jinx. I used the zap many times to ditch the jinx and still had 2 spells to choose from for my main action.  As it was, I was one damage shy (on a significantly low roll (2 pts under average at least) of a hurl boulder - with hawkeye) kill shot and ending the game many turns earlier.

Hey, I also wanted to thank Coshade and Intangible0 for the casual games. They were a great time. I think you guys are in Chicago. Maybe we can schedule a weekend sometime to meet down here or maybe in Lafayette which is about half way between us for some more casual games. Perhaps some of the Ft Wayne folks could slide over too.

.  Have not been on the forums for a very long while. So, missed this dinner. I certainly would have come had I known.  It was great meeting so many from this forum at gencon. Great to put faces with names and a pleasure to meet those of you fortunate enough to get to go to the con. A great group of folks sharing their lpassion for this game. Wish I could have gotten more games in with some of you. Hopefully will see you at the con next year.

General Discussion / Re: Where are all the non-male mage wars players?
« on: August 03, 2015, 10:50:06 PM »
.  MW has many elements to it. It is like chess, magic the gathering, fantasy miniatures war battles all combined. Each one of those element items are each very heavilly dominated by males. It would seem to follow that since this game combines all of those, then mw would also be heavilly dominated by males. I don't care whether my opponent is a girl or not. i have actually played against another mw players' wife. She played well too btw. I just want to play and have a great time with folks playing a great game. It just does not surprise me that there are not more women playing. Would definitely like to see more though.

. Yes, thanks for running the event. Was a great time. Congrats to Hanma for his win. I knew if we were going to play each other, it was going to be a very difficult fight. I had a shot to win outright, but came up short. At that point I knew we were likely to go the distance on time. I thought that since we were close on life totals at the end, there was going to be another window of opportunity. I was setting myself up for that window for the last four rounds of the match. But he made a very great double move on his last action, which prevented my last chance. He had the iniative and used it properly and solidified the match. Again, congrats Nick.

Strategy and Tactics / Re: On mana crystal effects and efficiency
« on: October 13, 2014, 04:27:14 PM »
Perhaps a simpler way of looking at it, is say with a 9 channel caster. If on turn one I case 2 mana enhancers, from then on I have 11 per turn generating presuming they stick around. From turn 2 on, I can churn out 11 cost creatures or less without having to save mana for a round. There are a lot of 11 cost war creatures as an example. Of course there would be some rounds where you skip creatures to play other things such as cool armor or enchantments etc, but with 11 channel you have more options to accomplish those decisions.
