Gravikor vs Walls
« on: October 31, 2015, 04:23:52 AM »
Situation :

Zone A is adjacent to zone B.
There's a Wall of Bones between them.
Zone A contains a Flying creature.
Zone B is under the effect of [mwcard=MWBG1J02] Gravikor[/mwcard].
The flying creature wants to move from zone A to zone B.

Question :

Does the creature lose flying before or after crossing the wall ?

If the answer is not "The creature loses flying after having crossed the wall." I'll surf imgur for at least an hour for an appropiate "MRW..."-caption.

I have to admit though the question might be deceivingly easy because the situation includes the keywords "wall" and "zone"

When you are pushed through a wall and the zone where you are coming from has a zone enchantment like Fortified Position or Sacred Ground, this effect will be included in the Roll Dice and Apply Damage Step.
Similar to this the creature of you example can fly over the wall (because zone A is counting for the movement) to zone B, where it immediately has to land.
Akiro, I have never prayed to you before. No one will remember if we were good men or bad. Why we fought, or why we died. All that matters is that one stood against many. That's what's important! Valor pleases you, Akiro... so grant me strength! And if you do not listen, then to HELL with you!

For the period of travel one is affected by effects from the zone one is coming from but not moving to.

That's the rule ?

When does "enter" take place ?

Like....coming from a zone with an [mwcard=MWBG1E01]Astral Anchor[/mwcard] and moving to a zone with a [mwcard=MW1E38]Teleport Trap[/mwcard] ? Does Teleport Trap trigger ?

Is there a difference between "enter" (game term) and "stand in / be in" a zone ? ...Can there be sort of an overlapping of zone effects which might contradict each other ?

Enter probably then means "having left 'coming from zone' and its effects and be in 'moving to zone' and its effects" ?

To answer the original question, the creature loses flying after crossing the wall. The steps are
1. Declare move
2. Apply any effects triggered by leaving the zone
3. Encounter Walls
4. Move
5. Apply any effects triggered by entering the zone

Gravikor isn't a triggered effect, so while it's a little unclear, I'd guess that it applies to the (formerly) flying creature at the completion of step 4, when the creature is now in the new zone. It's possible that it is properly resolved in step 5 as if it's a triggered effect. Either way, the creature loses flying after step 3, where it would encounter the wall.

Quote from: The FAQ
Move Action
When a creature moves from one zone to another, there is a specific sequence of events which must be followed.

A creature might move to a new zone by taking a move action, or it might be Pushed or Teleported.
Regardless as to how it moves to the new zone, it follows the move sequence below, although some parts or
steps might be irrelevant. For example, a Teleport bypasses Walls and ignores Step 3 below.

1. Declare Move
Choose which zone the creature will move to. Check to see if the move is possible (for example, make sure no wall will block the move), and make sure the creature has an available action and is not Restrained, Rooted or Incapacitated. If you discover you made a mistake and the creature cannot be moved (for example, the wall is “Passage Blocks”, not “Passage Attacks”), you can cancel the move action and choose a different action instead.
Then, pay any costs associated with the move (taking damage, or paying Suppression Orb's mana cost, etc.). At this time the move is committed to. If you cannot pay all of the costs, the move is cancelled, and you have lost the action.

2. Leaving Zone Effects
Some spells or abilities might have an effect which triggers when a creature is leaving a zone. Note that there currently are no “Leaving Zone” effects in the game, but future ones will be added.

3. Walls
The creature encounters any intervening walls (unless it is Teleporting, in which case it ignores walls). If a creature has been Pushed into a wall with the Passage Blocks trait, it becomes Bashed and receives a Bash Attack now. If the creature is moving through a wall with the Passage Attacks trait, it conducts that attack at this time.

4. Move to New Zone
The creature must be moved into the new zone. It is possible that a wall attack might Restrain or Incapacitate a creature, in which case it will not be able to complete its move action, and will not be able to move into the new zone. See “Walls” below.

5. Entering Zone Triggers
Any spells, abilities, or effects which trigger for a creature entering a zone occur at this time. Examples
include a trap or Mangler Caltrops spell. You do not get a chance to reveal enchantments after each of the 4 events above, like you do with the attack and casting sequences. (However, if there is a wall attack, you can reveal enchantments after each Step of the attack as normal. See “Walls” below.)

If a creature becomes unable to move during the move action, it stops the move sequence at that point, and the rest of the move action is canceled. For example, a creature could become Restrained from a “Leaving Zone Effect”. If this happens, the rest of the move action is canceled, and it will not encounter any walls, nor actually be moved into the new zone.
I can take the fun out of anything. It's true; here, look at this spreadsheet.

It's nicely explained in rules supplement
Quote from: Rules Supplement
Gravikor (Promo Card)
If a Flying creature moves from a zone inside Gravikor’s area of effect to a zone outside of its area of effect, it
will not bypass any walls, but will be Flying as it enters the new zone (so will not trigger a Spiked Pit trap, for
example.)
If a Flying creature moves from a zone outside Gravikor’s area of effect to a zone inside of its area of effect, it
will bypass walls, but will not be Flying as it enters the new zone (so it will trigger a Spiked Pit trap, for
example.)

@Kaarin:
While that information doesn't contradict what ringkichard posted, I do think it's pertinent to point out that it was written before Move Actions had steps, and is thus somewhat outdated. The steps for a Move Action are the most recent ruling and would take precedence, which actually have been slightly updated as well since the quote from ringkichard. The current steps are:

1. Declare Move
2. Pay Costs
3. Leaving Zone Effects
4. Walls
5. Move
6. Entering Zone Effects

A creature is never in more than one zone, and is subject to whatever effects may be present within that zone. Thus, before step 5 it is subject to whatever effects are in it's starting zone, and after step 5 it is subject to the effects of the new zone it is in. This is different from "Leaving Zone Effects" and "Entering Zone Effects" which are specific spell effects that only trigger upon leaving or entering a zone. General effects such as Gravikor only care about what zone you are currently in, which is only changed during step 5 of a Move Action.

This should also answer GW's question. You change what zone you are in during step 5, and then trigger any Entering Zone Effects that are in that zone during step 6. If contradictory zone effects are present, it would follow the rules of multiple effects outlined on pages 8 & 9 of the Rules Supplement, which is that they are applied in order of their timestamp, with the later effects taking precedent.

No problem. The 4th edition of the rulebook was made available to download recently though, if you want to grab it.
