Holy Avenger and Rouse beast
« on: January 24, 2014, 04:18:39 PM »
Question:

My priest gets attacked by a grizzly.
My priest summons a holy avenger Knight of Westlock.
QC Rouse Beast.
Do the HA buff kick in for the knight vs the grizzly in this round?

I *think* it gets the ability.

The Holy Avenger ability is keyed to the Priest, not the Token (IE, its an ability on his card and so has been in play already.  The token isn't an "enchantment" carrying the buff).   So when the named Holy Avenger gets his attack, all the criteria has been met to trigger the bonus.

So, to the best of my knowledge it works.

I agree with Baron. But made one clarification.

Revealed Block/Reverse Attack, successful Defense, ~0.05% chance all 7 dice roll a blank.

I don't think HA ability kicks because it was timestampped after the damage was dealt, but I'm always wrong

"Each round, the first time it melee attacks an enemy creature, if that creature attacked and damaged another friendly creature or holy conjuration this round, it gains melee +2 and piercing +1 for that attack."

All of the conditions are met for the avenger to get the bonus so it sounds good to me.

I agree that holy avenger would get its bonus, but that brings an interesting question to my mind. If the bear had attacked and killed an existing holy avenger, then I summoned and roused a new holy avenger the same round, would it get the bonus against the bear?

"The first time it melee attacks an enemy creature....."

It here referring to the creature that the holy avenger ability is attached to.

Hmmm,

If the previous HA had already attacked and got its HA bonus, then get killed and you summon and rouse a new HA, would that new HA get the bonus? Does the "it" refer to the creature or the HA?

The dead HA could and would be considered a friendly creature.

i know that, that was not my question.

My question is, the "it" in "The first time it melee attacks...", does it refers to the creature or the HA to know if it was its first melee attack.

Yes, this looks to me like it works. I think the rule as written is pretty clear. You could even probably get the bonus with a first Holy Avenger, and if it died also get the bonus with a second new roused Holy Avenger.

The rule doesn't accumulate knowledge about the past, it just checks trigger conditions when it resolves. If that happens more than once a turn, so be it.
I can take the fun out of anything. It's true; here, look at this spreadsheet.
