This strategy may work better without a spawnpoint. If you decide to use a creature spawnpoint, I think Graveyard would work better than Libro for this style of play, although it takes a while to pay off, it's true.

Deathshroud Staff is something I play a little bit later. Once I'm going to actually consider attacking with my mage and I have enough creatures that the spell is useful I'll consider playing it.

As for Libro, I wouldn't cast Harmonize on it, as that leaves you vulnerable to an efficient Dissolve/Explode. It becomes efficient enough with Death Ring anyway.

I agree with this entirely.

I am leaning heavily towards no spawnpoint, just for the early game presence I can get without one. My only reservation is that opening with 2x Crystals (what I would need in order to support summoning mid-sized creatures semi-regularly) feels kinda...wrong.

Personally I wouldn't go 2x Crystals + Spawnpoint. Feels too slow and too expensive. I only like using up all my mana in the opening if it is to summon a starting creature.

Deathshroud Staff is something I play a little bit later.

You could do the same opening I suggested but replace the staff with a mana crystal/meditation amulet?

I just do staff in the opening because I don't want to have to worry about summoning it mid-game.

I agree...which is why I was talking about 2x Crystals and no spawnpoint.

One minor addition you might consider is swapping one of the Hurl Boulders for a zone-attack spell like Firestorm. It costs more in the book, of course, but it punishes an enemy who defends themselves by clumping their creatures. (Plus I always seem to find myself mid-game *wishing* I had an area attack spell, whatever the spell book I'm playing.)

Also, is it pronounced "Ick-the-lid" or "Itch-the-lid"? Anyone know?

I've always heard Bryan say "Ik-Th-Lid", so I assume that's correct.

I asked Bryan at BGGCon and that is how he pronounced it: "Ick-Th-Lid" would be my phonetic spelling...

Ik-thel-lid is how I've been saying it.

Pardon my thread necro, but given the topic, it seems appropriate. I just recently played a variation on this spellbook's theme with a card coming out in Forged in Fire, and it's incredibly fun, and at least medium competitive (it reverses the Druid matchup, for starters). Can't wait!

Guess we'll have to wait to find out when you write the preview!

Hmm.
As we talked about, he saw it coming, Seeking Dispelled the Retaliate and then punched me for 20 damage in two rounds and then he Purifed the Tainted Markers before I could finish off Adramelech...

Maybe Hurl Rock would be a better plan than the two enchantments. Or Death Link. Hmm. It's a brittle plan, admittedly.
