Burn Question: How does Flame +/- X interact
« on: August 25, 2012, 03:43:07 PM »
If a creature has BURN tokens on it and has a Flame +/- X,  how does that work in upkeep?

Does flame have any  benefit or detriment to BURN?

I know Flame +/- effects whether or not you GET the burn, but I don't know if it effects the die roll once you have burn. If it did, I think +flame would ADD to the roll, making it more likely to burn and -flame would SUBTRACT from the roll making it less likely to get burned.

Here is the Burn CODEX:

Burn
Object is on fire. This is a Flame condition. Each
Upkeep Phase, roll 1 attack die of direct damage
for each Burn marker on each object. On a roll of
“0”, remove that Burn marker. Burn markers have a
removal cost of 2.

Given this is a FLAME condition,  would a -2 Flame stop up to 2 burns attached to a creature?  Such as the Dragon Armor on a Mage with Flame - 2 ?

The Flame +- effects only dice from flame attacks and flame effect die rolls. Once a creature has a burn marker unless its Flame Immune the trait doesn't make a difference. It states burn as a Flame condition so that we know it doesn't effect Flame Immune creatures. who cannot have burn markers placed on them.

Ok,  I think I found my answer while reading through the rules today!

Burn does DIRECT damage.

Here is the definition of DIRECT damage from the book on page 30:

DIRECT Damage
Some effects cause direct damage. This damage
is placed directly on the target creature. It is not an
attack, and cannot be prevented or avoided. Armor
and other traits, effects, and abilities cannot modify
or reduce direct damage.

Exception: If an object has Immunity to a damage
type, it is not affected by direct damage of that type.

Given that FLAME +/- is a trait or an effect,  it does NOT modify or reduce!

Fuerhelm is correct!

Direct damage is not affected by +/- damage modifiers.  Even though the Burn condition requires a roll, it is not considered an attack roll, but is simply used to determine the amount of direct damage received.

How do we determine the burn damage? a roll of 1 = 1damage / a roll of 2 = 2 damage?

You receive 1 die of direct damage, therefore if you roll a 1 then you receive 1 damage, if you roll a 2 then you receive 2 damage.
Never in this game are 2's turned into 1's.  If you are getting confused by Incorporeal objects, they ignore any 2's rolled, you don't turn those 2's into 1's.

Is there any inherent limit to the number of burn markers a creature can have at one time?  last night I had a creature with four burn markers at once....not fun...

There is no limit to how many tokens of any type that a creature can have, however, some tokens such as Stun won't stack, so there's no real point to adding more than 1 on a creature.
