Flying, LOS, & Unmoveable
« on: March 04, 2016, 03:01:06 PM »
A couple questions:

1. Does Flying grant LOS to Zones behind (adjacent) and or beyond, Walls?  I believe the rulebook only mentions other Flying Creatures.  Apologies if I am overlooking the relevant part.

2. Can a Flying Creature be Unmoveable at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

Great questions!

1) Yes, Flying does grant LOS beyond and all other aspects of walls. Also no worries on wanting clarification, that's what this section of the forums is for  8)

2) Yes, a Flying Creature can be Unmovable at the same time. So if you had a flying creature such as a [mwcard=MW1C37]Thunderift Falcon[/mwcard] guarding, he would lose flying. If while he was guarding you choose to [mwcard=MW1J22]Tanglevine[/mwcard] him, then the flying creature would gain unmovable (but could not fly because he is restrained). It is possible to gain unmovable and still be flying, but I don't think that combination exists yet.

How would that even work, thematically speaking?

Unmovable usually means a creature too heavy to push, or it grips the ground really hard so you can't push it. If it has flying it can't hold onto the ground to resist pushing, but it would have to hold onto something. If it was gripping space itself, it would be impossible to teleport, but I'm not sure if pushing it would warp space or if the push effect would rebound on the caster, or if it would be straight up unmovable or what.

Of course, it could be some sort of powerful incorporeal creature that is holding onto the air itself and keeping it in one place to give it shape and not fly all over the place. This would mean that you cannot push a ghost, and it would be a good explanation for why passing through a ghost makes one feel cold. Because they are literally containing air within a thin barrier of magic, which pressures the air, making it cooler and denser than normal air. And maybe they're also holding onto it through sheer force of will...or something.

That would make ghostly creatures unmovable.

Or maybe a sky tower or sky castle that floats around and can "park" itself in one particular location in the air.

Hmm...

Is that some sort of hint?

Hmmm... so you're saying this could apply to a solo Mage strategy...

If we assume the male Forcemaster will have some sort of flying/levitating ability (based on his art), perhaps similar to the Necropian Vampiress, then I wonder if it might say something like "... may pay 1 mana to gain Flying until the end of its activation. While it has Flying, it loses and cannot gain the Unmoveable, Uncontainable and Unstoppable traits," or something like that. Otherwise, there's a weird thematic disconnect with Eagleclaw Boots. And if there's ever a non-Rooted Unmoveable Living Creature that could take Eagle Wings, perhaps that card would need errata explaining as much.

By the way, compressing a gas (and increasing pressure in general) causes it to heat up, not cool. The expansion of a gas (e.g. from a compressed gas cylinder) causes it to cool, and evaporation is an endothermic process. I'm not sure what impact this would have on sensation when passing through a ghost, though. It might make you rethink how ghosts work... Or not...

But not a creature... which, I think, is what was on everyone's mind. Still, good point.
