Face down enchantment on illegal target, is it legal?
« on: March 15, 2015, 11:29:43 AM »
I saw some topics related to the subject, but none, to my knowledge, that answer that very specific question (let me know if I'm wrong please):

Can I put a face down enchantment on an illegal target? (Bear Strength on a non-living creature, Harmonize on an object without channeling, eagle wings on a mage, etc.)

From what I understand, if I reveal the enchantment and the target is illegal, then it is automatically destroyed. However, as long as it's face down, this shouldn't matter, right?

Then, I can use Shift Enchantment or Enchantment Transfusion to put it on a legal target before revealing it.

Also, related question: What if Sersiryx or Sectarus casted a non-curse spell (decoy or anything else.) I guess it would, again, be destroyed when revealed, but as long as it's face down, it doesn't matter.

Why would I do that? To play a mind game against the opponent, of course.

Thank you,

No.
Step 1 casting a spell requires that the target be a legal target of the hidden enchantment.

Shift and enchantment transfusion also require the recipient to be a legal target so you cannot move a hidden bear strength onto a zombie for example.

Kharhaz is correct. Purposefully casting an enchantment on an illegal target, or from an illegal source, is cheating.

yeah, great question.
And good answer offcours.

Because I had read something about playing a card face down to bluff on your enemy.

And I was playing with the idea of putting a bear streng to play as a trap. To place it in a zone and than shift it to my creature before attacking.

But that is also incorrect than I gues

But you could put an enchantment on a legal target, even if you could never reveal it on that target?

Yes, you can put Jinx on a creature like Iron Golem that can never cast a spell.
