Warlord vs Forcemage Apprentice Books
« on: February 20, 2013, 11:53:36 PM »
I know it just came out today, but i was hoping to get some help developing some Apprentice Level spellbooks for Warlord vs Forcemage.  Just in the FLGS today, the new expansion generated a bunch of interest in the two new mages, and I was hoping to have a way to make lists so i can demo with them in the near (Saturday!) future.

Any suggestions? I've noticed the following rules apply to the apprentice books as vast generalities.

You want to avoid ability-specific equipment for example, the Curse of Fear.
Avoid Spellbind effects and Familiars.
Avoid Non-attaching Conjurations (IE Tanglevine is okay, Wall of Pikes isn't.)
Avoid Legendary and Epic spells and Creatures.
Tend towards Enchantments with simple, concise effects (Block, Bear's Strength, Force Hold).
Keep all spells Thematic (No healing for Warlocks!)

With those (general) guidelines in mind, can we pare down the sample books for Forcemaster and Warlord to their apprentice versions?  Devs, any input? I feel like this was a massive oversight, and my only complaint about the new expansion.

I may be running a demo soon and thought it would be fun to give people the option of apprentice level forcemaster and warlord.  Looking through the other apprentice books, they are around 60 points. I went through the starter spellbooks and removed the more complex concepts, plus cards to get the points down. This is what I came up with:
Forcemaster:

Equipment
   3 storm drake hide
   2 psi-orb
   1 force ring
Creature
   2 (6) psylok x3
Enchantments
   3 Force Crush
   2 (4) Charm x2
Incantation
   6 heal
   4 mass sleep
   1 (3) force wave x3
   1 (2) repulse x2
   3 seeking dispel
   3 dispel
   3 minor heal
   1 (2) force push x2
   2 force bash
   3 dissolve
Attack:
   2 (6) Force Hammer x3
   1 (4)Invisible Fist x4
60

Warlord:

Equipment
   2 Storm Drake Hide
   2 War Sledge
   2 Helm of Command
Conjuration
   2 Quicksand
Creature
   1 (3) Goblin Grunt x3
   2 (4) Goblin Slinger x2
   2 (4)Orc Butcher x2
   2 Goblin Bomber
   3 Dwarf Kriegsbiel
   3 Iron Golem
   4 Grimson Deadeye, Sniper
Enchantments
   2 (4) Fortified Position x2
   2 Standard Bearer
   2 Mind Shield
   2 Falcon Precision
Incantation
   2 Dissolve
   3 Dispel
   2 Minor Heal
   4 Group Heal
   2 Whirling Strike
   1 (2) Power Strike x2
Attack
   2 Hail of Stones
   2 Hurl Boulder
60

Any opinions would be appreciated

Cheers

I know you said that removing the more complex concepts was the main criteria for cutting cards, but I think removing Galvitar takes away the feeling of playing a Forcemaster. I can't imagine playing a melee focused mage without a melee weapon. I think that would actually be worse than taking away the Warlock's Lash of Fire and he got to keep that in his apprentice book.

It looks like you may have tripled the cost for some arcane, holy, and water spells in the Forcemaster list and they should only be doubled.

her stat card says pay triple for all non-mind spells.

Yeah was debating if I should have Galvitar in, wasn't sure if it over powered her at apprentice level.

I would avoid using the Forecemaster and Warlord to teach people to play the game. Both are specialised Mages and I think you get a better idea of how to play them knowing the game already.

Have them handy to show people but the Warlock and Beastmaster are a better pair to use for demos

I agree the FM is a hard mage to play because you have to know what to expect and when to play a card, ect. Its kinda like the color blue in magic.
Evil acts are committed every day,
So therefore the world is evil.
I would have to disagree.
Yes, the world may be filled to the brim with darkness,
But, if we try, with a smile or a hug,
We can light it up.
