Wall of Text
Conjuration-Wall

Creature caught looking at Wall of Text, become blind, and must stumble around the arena. Bats and other creatures with echolocation or enhanced senses are immune.

Is that from the upcoming Librarian and Politician expansion? ;-)

Well that kind of sucks that there are 2 cards with the same number FWC04 with different texts on them.

Guess quality control procedures failed here. First of all the card number was not updated and secondly the text contains a spelling error "boarding".

Makes one wonder which version of the card is correct. The one that allows to repair walls or the card that does not allow that, which would have been easy if one of the card versions would have the number FWC04-2...

So the official statement is that it *can* repair walls, correct?

I agree that "Then" is amgiguous.

It would already be different if it became part of the previous sentence: ", then".

Martyr's Restoration

"INCANTATION. Epic.
In every upkeep phase, each player must put 1-3 doomed condition markers on any object or enchantment in the arena - except for the mages (max 1 per object). In the first planning phase where the arena only contains the mages without any enchantments, the planning phase is being replaced by the following action: All players must take their discard pile, shuffle the cards and put that pile face down. Beginning with the player who first invoked Martyr's Restoration, players may take the top card from their shuffled discard pile and position this card anywhere in the arena as long as the card finds a valid location. Each time a player can not place a card, his mage suffers 5 damage and loses 5 life and the card is discarded to a new discard pile. When all cards have been restored to the arena, gameplay resumes with the mage who did not put the last card into the arena."

General Discussion / Re: Mage Wars Companion App - Feature Requests
« on: June 02, 2016, 07:34:47 PM »
My top desired features:

- Review the Mage card of the selected mage.
- Ability to copy a spell book.
- Search for any text on the card ("teleport" or "vampiric" or "fire +" or "equipment" etc).
- Cards in other languages (German).
- Add Arena + Battlegrounds cards.
- Search only for certain spell types ("Equipment" or "Creature" or "Incantation" etc.)
- Option to generate the default deck for each mage as suggested by the documentation.
- Ability to review the entire codex for all products including search feature.
- Guided attack - Q&A guiding a player through an attack: "Does the attacked object have the flying trait? (y/n)" / "Do you have Line of Sight to the target? (y/n)" / "Does the attacked object have a defence? (y/n)" etc.
- Swipe left right to move between magnified cards.
- Ability to send spell books to other users via mail, messages etc.
- Hyperlink keywords on cards to integrated codex.
- Roll dice.
- A 4x4 field matrix (or larger) where column search terms are AND-ed and row search terms are OR-ed. All search terms searching all relevant text on the card. That way you could search for cards that are either incantations or enchantments from the nature school that modify melee or ranged attacks:

"incantation" AND "nature" AND "melee +"
OR
"enchantment" AND "nature" AND "melee +"
OR
"incantation" AND "nature" AND "ranged +"
OR
"enchantment" AND "nature" AND "ranged +"

Eye for an Eye:

"INCANTATION. Your mage rolls X attack dice. X is the difference between the number of eyes your active creatures have vs the number of eyes your inactive creatures have (made a positive number). If the total on the attack dice is an even number, your opponents mage rolls 1 dice less than you did. If the total on the attack dice is an uneven number, your opponents mage rolls 1 dice more than you did. A mage can never roll more dice than the total cost of all remaining cards in their spell book minus the number of cards that remain in their spell book. A mage can never roll less dice than the number of creatures that could cause hindrance to the opponents mage if that opponent mage had the flying trait for all zones without walls on their border and the elusive trait for all other zones. The mage who can roll dice the longest may choose a random creature card from the opponents spell book and put it in the zone where the mage who owned this card started the game. If a route exists from this zone to the zone where the other mage started, and this route is no more than 1 zone longer than the theoretical shortest route between these zones, then the creature becomes defected and gains the loud and flapping traits. Otherwise it gains the unloyal and lightning fast traits. If the creature has the flying trait, it temporarily loses this trait for the purpose of calculating this route. If - in the next turns - the other mage can move this creature to their starting zone while the creature did not get more damage than the amount of armour it has, all its traits and attributes are multiplied by 2, the creature gains the dissipate 4 trait and is now controlled by the opposite mage. Creatures with the dissipate X trait, but without markers on them, are returned to their original owner's spell book and all traits and attributes return to their printed values - 1."

Also look at the card number at the bottom of the card. I believe new versions of a card get a "-2" attached to it.

FWC04-2 for example.

Mine just has FWC04 and does not include the zone borders.

I think it makes sense for this creature to also repair walls.

General Questions / Re: Blue Gremlin and Teleport
« on: May 31, 2016, 05:35:50 PM »
Blue Gremlin can teleport even if Unmovable or Restrained. The source doesn't matter for that.

So this means CURRENTLY:

WILL the Blue Gremlin set off traps?
YES, it still enters the zone

WILL the Blue Gremlin be able to teleport thru a wall with no LoS(like a stone wall)?
YES, because teleporting does not require LoS - although the incantation Teleport does require LoS ("target zone").

WILL the Blue Gremlin take a passage attack from a wall with the trait?
NO, because it teleports past the wall

CAN the Blue Gremlin move out of a conjuration of effect that Restrains him?
OLD rules said NO (because BG cannot move and therefore not teleport) - CURRENT rules say YES (because it teleports instead of moving).

WILL the Blue Gremlin be hindered ?
OLD rules said YES (because BG teleports as a *move action*) - CURRENT rules say NO (because its move action has become a *teleport*).

CAN the Blue Gremlin move 2 at a time, bypassing a zone enchantment for example ?
NO, because moving 2 zones really consists of 2 individual move actions that are in the case of the BG in fact teleport actions. So the BG teleports out of its current zone and touches down in the first zone that is next to its current zone before teleporting a 2nd time to the 2nd zone that is next to the first zone.

Did I get it?

Was kind of hoping that terrain would come with tiles to cover the zones in the Arena - analogous to the terrain zones in Domination.  I guess nothing prevents me from printing off an image of a "shallow sea" and placing it on the Arena when this card is in play.
(Similarly, I guess I could make standees for walls.  I've seen standees for mages in online images, but we always use the cards.)

Funny, I had it the other way around: I wished in Battlegrounds they had provided the terrain enchantment cards so that we could use them in Arena as well.

Hi. I'd like to make a remark that a lot of you will likely resist to with all might, because it would cause a lot of hassle if you agree.  8)

But I think I am right.

In the codex and rule book it was hard for me to understand the concept of attacks etc. I think the reason is that the word "attack" is being used as a synonym for 2 different concepts. Firstly "attack" can mean an "attack action". And secondly an "attack" can mean a single strike within an attack action.

To correct this, only attack and attack action should be handled as synonyms. And an attack would then consist of one or more "strikes". This definition is very intuitive, because those things are already called "counterstrike" or "double/tripple strike". If you search in the rulebook / codex for "attack", you will see that in almost all cases "attack" is being used as "attack action" as is the case on most cards.

But if you then read the section on attacks, it becomes very fuzzy, because now the strikes inside the attacks are also called attacks. Now definitions for a defence for example become very fuzzy:

"Some Defenses show an infinity symbol (∞). These Defenses can be used every time that creature is attacked, but can be used only one time per attack.".

So what does the last "attack" mean here? The entire attack action or a strike?

My suggestion for a future version of the game would be to use "attack" and "attack action" as synonyms and define a "strike" as what happens inside the attack.

Step 4 should then for example be called "4: Avoid Strike", because it is not really about avoiding an entire attack (action), it is about avoiding a strike inside the attack (action).

Another example: The definition of Melee +x would become:

"Melee +X
This creature gains +X attack dice when it makes a melee attack. If the attack makes multiple strikes, it gains this bonus only for the first strike it can make with this bonus. Does not grant a melee attack if this creature does not have one. Does not affect ranged attacks, damage barriers, or other non-melee attacks."

...instead of (old):

"Melee +X
This creature gains +X attack dice when it makes a melee attack. If the attack makes multiple attacks during the same attack action, it gains this bonus only for the first attack it can make with this bonus. Does not grant a melee attack if this creature does not have one. Does not affect ranged attacks, damage barriers, or other non-melee attacks."

I guess you do not even have to change card texts, because in 99% of the cases when "attack" is being used, what is really meant is an "attack action".

If this is not correct this way, the only option to gain full clarity would be to maintain "attack" and "strike" as synonyms and replace all occurrences of "attack" with "attack action". But that will probably mean more work and will be much more confusing.
