Spellbook Builder / Re: My spellbook builder

Is this spellbook builder still supported?

Really wanted to build some books, involving the newer Academy Necromantic spells!

Very nice blog post, thanks for sharing. And congrats on your win, regardless of how well earned you may think it was!

Like many, I've always thought of Academy as a training level for Arena - or a way to try and entice players to step up and try Arena. I've only played Academy games myself with the base set, which I didn't think was a particularly great experience, and have treated the expansions as extra cards for Arena.
Your post has got me thinking that maybe there is more of a game here, now that the cardbase has expanded a bit. And thanks for sharing your deck, I don't think any Academy deck I've ever played would have had an answer to it :)

Watched a couple of the videos, always nice to see commented MW videos :)

If your tactic is so dependent on the clerics, then why not bring a few walls - and wall one off in the corner?
I don't believe that the prayer to activate Alfiya requires line of sight, or anything like that.

Another small change

"Altar of Carnage", "Altar of Domination" and "Barracks" are all "Epic", yet max number in spell book shows as 4, not 1.
Other War conjurations are fine.

Made another small change - when you "hide spellbook" it still displays total spellbook cost. I would recommend hiding both the spellbook and sets once you select your mage and start building a spellbook so you can see the important information in the right bar.
A small, but incredibly useful, change! :)

An improvement I'd like.
Is it possible to get an option to hide/filter cards based on either:

1. Card is N/A for the mage in question. ie, "Warlock only" when I select Priest. Maybe even extend it to having a dropdown at the bottom, so I can select from the cost of spells (so an option for "not N/A", then each individual points number)? When building a spellbook, it would make it easier to spend that final 1 or 2 points.
2. If I don't have the set listed as one I own? So I have the option to only see cards I actually have in my collection? An advantage of this would be that the builder would work easier for making Academy decks, since you could only select that you own the Academy sets.

And one tiny change. Can you add a link to the spellbook builder to your first post in this thread?
Just to make it easier for anyone new who happens by this thread?

Like so many others here - thank you SO much for your efforts here.
An updated spellbook builder is what I've longed to see for so long!

A small bug to report

Leviathan Scale Armor - shows up when I filter by "Holy School", should be Water.

Had a quick skim through all the other spells, all look to be in correct schools when filtered.

I miss iNano's persistence on this thread - I hope he hasn't given up hope on this! :)

Like many people, I would like to have the SBB functionality available while on a work PC - and it is rarely possible to access OCTGN at this time. Plus, I prefer the simplicity of the SpellBookBuilder here.

Would it be possible to open access to the DB to some of the senior members here (or following iNano's suggestion of paying a student in beer ;) )? If it means improvements in our favorite game - then I've no doubt that people will easily give their time for no more than a "thank you" message.

I'm not trying to undermine anyone's efforts on the SBB, but I'd just like to see it function a lot better than it currently does.

The lack of a fully functioning, easily accessible, spellbook builder is a very annoying problem - especially when I try to introduce newer players to building their own decks (ie, saying something like "OK most of the cards in the DB work fine. Take a note of ones that don't work so well yourself. And also consider taking these useful Academy cards that aren't in the DB yet.")

League / Tournament Play / Looking for players in Vienna
« on: January 13, 2017, 06:08:34 AM »
Having just moved to Austria recently, I find myself without my old regular Mage Wars playgroup - so would like to know if anyone in the Vienna area plays?

Prefer the Arena/Domination setup, but quite happy to play Academy too :)

Resources and Downloads / Re: Wizard and Wizard's Tower Errata
« on: July 15, 2016, 05:52:30 AM »
Having only saw this, I'm gonna weigh in and express my delight at these changes. I've always disliked the Wizard, as he always felt "too good". Certainly Wizards always seem to have the best winning records when my group play, so we generally don't play them as it always seemed too easy to win.

I know that errata are always difficult for games designer to put in. Especially when it's changing such a core design element of the game. But I can see how the old Wizard could definitely have limited the options of developing new spells for other Mages. It's not the change I would have made (I'd have also added an opposition school, probably Nature), but it is definitely one that I can happily get behind.

The Wizard Tower fix is absolutely perfect. When a card is so good that the only "right" option is to always take it, then it's probably too good. Like others have stated already, I now think it's a good and viable card - but nowhere near being an auto-include.

Fantastic work by AW!!!!

Oh, and I'd also like to echo a few other comments that I'd like to see some kind of future release that involved a collection of errata'd cards. Would definitely be an auto-purchase by me! :)

Thanks for the replies all. Really appreciate the pointers.

You've ruined my mate's plan to combat my BM build - but it sounds like the game will be better balanced by playing by the "actual" rules :)

OK - so we should actually learn to read rules properly then!  :)

Does that still apply if there is a player owned Sslak guarding an orb? ie - the other players would need to take that one down before they could control the orb, but the guardian owning player could still control it?

General Discussion / Battlegrounds - Elusive
« on: January 22, 2016, 06:16:54 AM »
Hey guys,

My local group of Mage Wars devotees only numbers 3, so we're loving Battlegrounds now! Got quite a few playthroughs in and I think it all works really well with > 2 players. However, do other people find that the Elusive trait is a bit overpowered?

I took a BM deck along recently. I filled it with every elusive creature I could find (including the weasel from Academy), then added 6 Falcons, 6 Mongoose Agility and Cheetah Speed (for my non-fast elusive creatures). It worked even better than I imagined and was a very quick and easy win, since being the first to tag Orbs gives such a nice boost in early turns. If all other mages don't recognise this and gang up on you quickly, you are pretty unstoppable. And you need to use ranged attacks or spells, as the orb guardian ironically defend my creatures from the first melee attack incoming!

We've considered adding a house rule that all Orb Guardians ignore Elusive creatures when guarding an orb. This would even encourage us to use our own V'Tar points to summon our own guardians to guard our "own" orbs (something we'd never consider doing in the current setup).

Do other people find this issue, or is elusive considered balanced in Domination?

General Questions / Basic attack while holding multiple items
« on: February 24, 2015, 08:16:23 AM »
I have something I'd like clarified.

If I have a Mage who's carrying two non-weapon items (say Mage Wand in main hand, Horn of Gothos in shield hand) - can I still make the basic attack as listed on the Mage's card?

I can't see anything against it in the rules, just seems funny from a "reality" point of view - maybe I'm bashing my target with the horn? :)
