General Discussion / Re: New Arena Player - Introduction

LudiG,

Whenever possible I try to pair new players so they play against each other. Then your role becomes more of a facilitator where you have not stake in the outcome of the match. You can advise, answer questions, and layer on new rules as needed for their pace and style of play. For example, if both players remain in their original corner you can remind them of the goal of the game and suggest aggressive play is needed to win a match.

Enjoy!

+1 for starting new players with Apprentice Mode.

See the link for an Apprentice Mode version of the Codex.

https://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/120066/mage-wars-apprentice-codex-2015

This helps new players to look up key words in the smaller spellbooks used by the Core Set apprentice mages.

I usually recommend a first turn planning phase of 1 equipment and 1 creature to get a new player started.

General Discussion / Re: Interesting website forum stats

Also, highest "most online" ever in 2018!
Is it me, or the community is increasingly clustering around this forum?
Here and on BoardgameGeek as well.

New players continue to show up on that forum asking about what expansions to buy next and how this rule or that rule interacts with XYZ.

It seems the growth model for this game is more about word of mouth, than a heavy marketing/promotion buzz.

I tried playing with Twister and was pretty disappointed. It doesn't do as much damage and effects as I would like, and attacks the caster unlike Electrify. If you are dead set on using Twister, I'd put in a Wind Wyvern Hide to reduce the effect. Alternately, put in Sandstorm instead... one more SBP cost, but it is the only range 2 zone attack that I'm aware of... and has a pretty decent attack bar.
Did you combine it with the Gale Force Ring?

Rules Discussion / Re: Acid Blast (academy, not promo)
« on: January 11, 2019, 06:10:33 AM »
My guess - it is describing the effect on the Attack bar.

However, it also seems plausible that the intent is to always place one corrode plus a chance for an addtional corrode on 9+. In Arena this would have been shown as

1 - 8    Corrode
9+    2 Corrode

This text might be the equivalent of this probability. Are there examples in Academy where a mutli-lined effect result is used?

General Discussion / Re: It is 2019 - What do we know?

Not dead so long as we keep playing it.

No new releases does not equal a dead game. There has not been an expansion to chess for 1000 years...
I agree with your first point.

As far as chess goes here are some 'expansions' for consideration. :)

A list of chess 'expansions'

Two versions that looked interesting to me.

Glyph Chess (plays 2 or 3 players)

I've kickstarted this game because a good 3-player games are hard to find.

Chessplus (a new version from an Australian company that allows a player to combine pieces and use the movement of either piece. Very clever.)

Rules Discussion / Re: Is Gate to Hell a Zone Attack?
« on: January 04, 2019, 09:37:24 PM »
Hooray! Another Swarm loophole.  The way Gate is written is that it is an un-targeted attack against all creatures. Therefore it hits all creatures, but I would say that the way the Swarm trait is written (RAW) it only does a maximum of one damage to them. I would love to be wrong about this.

Technically, there is no RAW for Swarms in Arena, so I guess it's up to Arena players to agree on rules for Academy for each of the new keywords and traits (e.g. Frost, Defrost, Swarm, Potion equipment, Breeches equipment).

First, the Academy rules are RAW for Arena. No need to spread misinformation.

Secondly, Gate to Hell, as Puddin pointed out, is an attack that is untyped. It has no symbol to determine the type of attack that it is (ranged, melee, or zone) so creatures with the swarm trait will recieve 1 damage as the G2H is not a zone attack.
I'm fine with your Gate to Hell interpretation, but I don't agree with your point about Academy rules as RAW for Arena. I agree with iNano on this point.

Do you have an official source as reference for your statement? This would help clarify several areas that currently are left to players to decide relative to differences in the rules. For example, if what you say is true, then the Pest trait in the 4th edition rulebook of Arena should be changed to the Academy version and included in the Codex and Rules Supplement.

I understand the position that AW has about Academy cards being compatible with Arena but to me this is different from saying all Academy rules are RAW for Arena. If that were the case, then we would need to remove the Planning Phase from Arena games to reflect Academy RAW.

A more concise integration of the product lines from a rules/supplement/card effects point of view would help all players and play testers.

Domination / Re: Let's talk Multiplayer Domination
« on: December 25, 2018, 10:31:48 PM »
Your point about higher V'tar points might work best. I've also considered two standard guardians in each orb zone or map configurations which place the same orb equidistant from multiple mages at the start. There are several variables to consider that could make this interesting.

Domination / Re: Let's talk Multiplayer Domination

I am imagining a 2-3 hour maximum for each match. Say 5 V'Tar points to end it. Each V'Tar point earned by a player in each match would be converted to Tournament Points with additional Tournament Points added for killing an opponent mage. This would allow players to try a mix of strategies during the tournament.

After X number of rounds the tournament points are totaled and ranked to determine the top 6 players and prizes awarded based on that ranking.

5 points only?

The game will be over in 5 turns. I don't think you'll need 3 hours.
I wasn't planning to leave the orbs without a guardian or two.

Also, the arena layout may include some distance between starting mages and the orb locations.

Interesting.

Let us know how this works out for your group.

I've been considering a 4-player domination style format for tournament play but haven't had time to put it down on paper yet. This allows more players to interact in each game without too much more table space.

Rules Discussion / Re: Dragon's Breath target options
« on: December 22, 2018, 11:58:37 AM »
You have to check LoS when you check range, when making an attack or casting a spell. If you do not have LoS then that target is not a legal target of the attack / spell

I thought it was "You have to check LoS when you TARGET something for an attack or spell casting."

i.e. Calculating range does not require a LoS, but targeting an object does.

That is the nuisance we have been using in our games.

Spellbook Builder / Re: My spellbook builder

I preordered them but am still waiting for them.
On the other hand I did get card images from Tony this time.
But then I also got another kid so I'm not sleeping and have 0 time for anything...
Congratulations Dad!

Happy Holidays to you and your family. Thanks for supporting the Mage Wars community with your programming talent.

Spells / Re: A little love for the Swamp
« on: December 02, 2018, 08:44:57 AM »
I have an Arena Druid spellbook that uses Swamp and Elephant Grass along with a Shoalsdeep Crocodile. The Academy Druid has some additional spells that should combo nicely with this terrain, but I have not updated my spellbooks yet.

The Swamp spell also combines with the Whirlpool for added damage and restricting movement. The Druid is the only mage fully trained in the Swamp spell so I primarily use it with that mage. However, it also fits with Siren strategies and has general application for other mages as you point out above.
