See TL:DR at the end if you don't want to read.

Behold and be afraid! Though they may be small, in a micro swarm Darkfenne Bats are things to be afraid of! Now, let me tell you a story: I got the idea for a Johktari build from Intangible0's Johktari spell rushing book, so I used that as a base. Starting with Hawkeye and Akiro's Favor and a couple Hurl Boulders I crafted it, but then I got an idea. What would happen if I stacked poisons? They are hard to get rid of, and a lot of books I have seen for both casual and tournament play do not have Wand of Healing in them.

So, armed with this knowledge, I began looking for ways to stack poisons. Poison Gas Cloud was nice for poison DoT damage, and a nice hinder, but I wanted more. I was stuck for a few days on what to do. Then, they came. Out of the shadows, like little messengers from Hel, the Darkfenne Bats crossed over my eyes on the spell book builder. Sure, they are weak and super frail, but if I were to get the Rot Counters stacking, then I would be set. With a smile on my face, and an evil gleam in my eye, I started crafting. How could I pass up Emerald Tegu and Giant Wolf Spider? The Taint and even more Rots would be delicious!

But wait, what does the Spitting Raptor have to do with DoTs? I'm glad you asked, imaginary person! I figured that by the point of the game where someone would stack armor, I would need some way to get around it, and the Spitting Raptor seemed perfect.

When the book was complete, I went and tested it. Against a solo, heavy Enchantment Forcemaster, RNGsus was on my side that night, and I managed to stack throughout the game: roughly 19 Rot tokens, and keep three Stuck Tokens on my opponent for roughly 6 - 7 ROUNDS, and keep 1 Taint Marker as well. As the game drew to a close, all three of my healing methods were blown to just barely avoid lethal damage; Healing Charms were used at the end of the Damage Step to off-set lethal damage, and Minor Heals were cast in place of anything else to boost my life out of the DANGER ZONE[/b] (cue guitar solo), and Renewing Spring pull out the very late game to heal enough to keep going. This casual game was won only by the using a tried-and-true method: Force Pushing through Wall of Thorns against Aegis 1 four times in order to kill.

TL:DR: This build takes advantage of Corrode/Rot/Stuck/Taint conditions in order to deal indirect damage during Upkeep. The Hurling Boulders are used to turn off defenses, and the Wall of Thorns+Force Push combo pairs well with Poison Gas Cloud to hinder and cause even more Upkeep damage and hinders movement for the next aerial assault from the Darkfenne Bat swarm.

So, while thinking back to the Gen Con tournament, and reading some build concepts around the forums, I noticed that there is no niche "anti-swarm" builds; given the popularity of swarm books, I figured I would take a crack at building a book designed around "anti-swarms" with a solo mage build. So, what better mage to try this out with than THE solo Mage for the game - The Forcemaster.

Now, the idea behind this build is that if a Mage starts to build for a swarm A) in their starting zone, or B) in one of the near center zones, the Forcemaster can either move to near center with Cheetah Speed turn 1, then Hawkeye/Force Hammer turn 2 to drop the Spawnpoint, or Hawkeye then Move to Force Hammer turn 1 then double Force Hammer to drop the Spawnpoint turn 2. Now, this book doesn't have a lot of kill potential, but the Mage Wand/Ignite with Adramelech's Touch + Combustion should take care of that.

Of course the tried and true anti-swarm cards are in: Mordok's Obelisk, Suppression Orb, Charm, and Essence Drain. Like I said, this is a very, very, VERY niche build.

Spellbook Design and Construction / King Under the Mountain v1
« on: August 07, 2014, 03:03:59 PM »
So, as I work on my Forcemaster Nuke build, I also decided I needed something else that has more reliable builds and that I can either fall back to as a Turtle build or a Swarm build. In that regard, I thought about the newest Warlord, and it dawned on me that I could do something like a Dwarf Army (with some Goblins begrudgingly) inspired by Tolkien. May I present, the first incarnation of the King Under the Mountain:

Yes, you are not mistaken in seeing that there is an Earth Elemental in there. If there is going to be King Under the Mountain, then the Mountain needs to be in the book! ;D I still have 14 spell points to use, and I'm not sure I have effectively built this the way I want. I'm thinking of something along the lines of summoning a T1 Goblin Builder with a Signet Ring for a mana cost of just 7, leaving 12 points over for T2, and having it build my outposts and Altar of Domination while I spend time moving around, building up the Army and buffing myself.

Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations? Keep in mind this is not tournament ready at. all. If anything, if there is a way to get this up to tournament level and still keep the theme of King Under the Mountain, I'd be massively impressed.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Defenses? All-In Forcemaster

Now, my thought process behind this build is that I want to be casting a damaging spell every turn on the opposing mage, and pulling him/her away from defenders and/or interceptors as well. The Suppression Orb and Mordok's Obelisk have their place for when, inevitably, the action counters stack up. Someone will die quickly.

Strategy and Tactics / Mr. Tibbers! (aka Pissed off Fire Grizzly)
« on: May 29, 2013, 03:01:25 PM »
I just thought of this with my love of League of Legends. There is a character called Annie, and she has an ability called Mr. Tibbers. She drops a bear that is on FIRE and it does stupid amounts of AOE damage and DOT damage.

Now, what I am thinking for MW is to do this:
  • Summon SteelClaw Grizzly
  • Enchant it with Bear Strength
  • Enchant with Rhino Hide
  • Enchant with Circle of Fire
  • Enchant with Reverse Attack, and Nullify
  • For the trolololololz, Enchant with Eagle Wings and Cheetah Speed 8)
Once this has been played, you must shout/yell, "YAY! TIBBERS!" or "Found you!" Then, proceed to laugh while your opponents run scared from you newly constructed Mr. Tibbers bear! The key to playing this is to be as innocent as possible, saying things like "Have you seen my bear Tibbers?" while building this bear, saving Circle of Fire as a hidden enchant for the last possible moment before revealing.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / Rulebook V2.0
« on: May 29, 2013, 02:44:55 PM »
Since this isn't a rules question, and since I've been in my own world with academia, has the new rulebooks v2.0 been included in newer releases of the Full Game set? I've been curious about this for some time now in between sifting through page after page of Psychology research articles...:sigh:

It'd be nice to know where the newer rule book is so when I finally stop being a broke college bu- I mean, student, I can get back into the Arena with my Forcemaster and Jailer Warlock

Rules Discussion / Wall and Jet Stream
« on: November 08, 2012, 05:32:56 PM »
So guys, I'm playing a game at this moment and my opponent wants to move my Wall of Fire with a Jet Stream to block off a Mana Siphon. Now, because WoF is a Conjuration and Jet Stream can target Conjurations, and the card does not say "Immovable" on it, can the Wall be moved with a Jet Stream? I don't see why a wall cannot be moved

General Questions / Priestess Special Ability
« on: November 06, 2012, 03:42:17 PM »
On the Priestess information card, she gets 1 Life every time she casts and resolves a Holy spell. Does that mean she actually increases her total life by 1 or does she heal 1 damage? I bring this up because one of my players played a Priestess and thought that she healed the damage instead of gaining one life. To avoid any conflict, I ruled that the Priestess would heal 1 damage until I got clarification from the forums.

General Questions / Flyers and the Ground
« on: November 06, 2012, 03:15:39 PM »
So, last night I had a few new players playing a Priestess custom and Wizard custom. The Priestess has Valshalla in the same zone as a Basilisk and gets crippled. The Priestess restores Valshalla and she takes off back into the sky. Now, the question that I could not properly answer last night was, "When Flyers attack, do they just swoop down and go back up? Or do they swoop down and land till the start of the next round?" Both players had legitimate reasons for both cases, which I could answer that Flyers come down to guard, and go back up when the guard comes off.

General Questions / Blue Gremlin and Teleport
« on: October 13, 2012, 10:56:04 PM »
In the rule book, the rules on teleport say that a creature that has teleport can move through walls to another zone. However, if a wall is blocking LOS how can such a teleport happen?

I ask this because a couple nights ago there was a starter match that I sat in on and a Wizard summoned a Blue Gremlin and then on the next round used a mana point to give the Gremlin Fast, which on the card says this trait counts as a teleport. But, Warlock has casted a Wall of Fire to block off the Gremlin's route the previous turn. Does the Gremlin bypass the wall even though the Wall blocks off LOS?
