General Discussion / Will mats be available to shops?
« on: February 03, 2016, 01:05:19 AM »
I noticed that Academy mats are avaible in AW shop, but to Canada, it cost 40$ of shipping (that's unbelievable how expensive USA shipping system is). So I was wondering if they will be available in shops?

Alternative Play / Dominate the Old Arena
« on: January 28, 2016, 01:02:10 AM »
Me and my friend like Domination mode, but found out 3 "problems".

Problem #1: Since most Domination spellbook are meant to gain and defend orbs, less points are allocated for the mage defense. So this mean a very aggresive mage get an advantage to simply rush the ennemy mage to try to kill him, which kinda defeat the purpose of Domination.

Problem #2: Needing a set amount of V'Tar to win means as soon as someone get a 1 V'Tar advantage over his opponent (which often happens to be whoever gain control first of an orb and drop Gallaxus), all he needs to do is to turtle up an even number of orbs than his opponent and wait for the win.

Problem #3: We bought Mage Wars playmat and Domination doesn't use them. So they are kinda wasted money for that purpose.

So we tried to come up with different ideas to fix these problems and I came up with this idea:

Dominate The Old Arena

Using the old 3x4 arena:

S1TO
2OO2
OT1S

S: Starting zones.
O: Orb zones. Usslak in corners and Sslak in middles.
T: Tunnel zones.
1 and 2: The player who lost initiative place the Spike Traps tokens in either zones 1 or 2.

The goal is not to score a certain amount of V’Tar, but to gain a certain amount of V’Tar over your opponent. Every round, for every extra V’Tar that you gain over your opponent, place a V’Tar token on your mage reference card. If you have 4 or more V’Tar token on your mage reference card, you win the game. The amount of V'Tar advantage needed to win can be adjusted depending of how long you want the game to last.

You can spend V’Tar during the deployment phase to summon a Sslak or an Usslak on a V’Tar Orb that you control. A Sslak cost 7 V’Tar and an Usslak cost 11 V’Tar. This is to give V'Tar a purpose and to help to secure your position when you push for the opponent orbs.

Now, how it solves the 3 problems?

Solution #1: By requiring a V'Tar advantage instead of a fixed amount, an opponent can't simply ignore them to rush you because the chance that they kill you within 4 turns once you control 1 orb are pretty slim. So they have to care about orbs too in the early game.

Solution #2: By requiring a V'Tar advantage instead of a fixed amount, this means you need to keep your advantage for several rounds instead to simply needing that single extra V'Tar to win.

Solution #3: It use the old arena, so we can use the MW playmats.

We didn't test it out yet, but once we do, I will give out the results. Just wanted to share in case someone wanted to try it and give me feedback about it.

General Discussion / Will you ever release other Mage Wars sleeves?
« on: January 25, 2016, 11:22:18 PM »
I love the spellbooks but I discovered that since Academy spellbooks contain about 30 cards, it is easier to just have them sleeved and hold the deck in hand. I find it is easier and faster to fetch the cards I want.

I bought some Mage Wars sleeves (which I find gorgeous) and because you do not shuffle the cards, the sleeves won't break easy nor often.

But so far, there are only 2 models: The Eye and the Libro Mortis.

So I was wondering if any other models would get released any time soon? Would be nice to have a Beastmaster/animal themed one. And for the to be released priestess and warlock, an angel and demon themed one.

General Discussion / So I played my first 8 Academy games
« on: January 02, 2016, 12:28:58 PM »
So yesterday I played for the first time Academy and I played 8 games. Here are my conclusions:

- IT IS AMAZING! It gives the feeling of Arena when everyone are in the same zone for the final confrontation and it is all about managing guards and attacks and denying your opponent the opportunity to do what they really want to do. I am loving it.

- Tarraki is "overpowered". Currently there is only 2 source of unavoidable attacks. Tarraki and Arcane Missiles. Once Tarraki is fully buffed (only require 3 cards), it has 8 hp, 1 armor, infinite defense of 5+ (only 33% chance to hit him), regenerate 1 and 4 dice attack. Also he is elusive, so basically, he hit whatever he want to hit. You can also have a Giant Size on him to prevent any sudden death and add extra damage. Since he is Legendary, you can't get out a Tarraki to kill it and Arcane Missiles won't kill it either with only 2 dice. And if you try to waste normal attack against him, the opponent will win.
TL;DR: Spells similar to Arcane Corruption to deal with alot of buff on a single creature need to make their appearance in Academy ASAP.

- I have no doubt in Priestess vs Warlock will bring ways to remove condition, but this need to be added to Academy ASAP too. When everything get weakened or staggered, games start to get very slow because everything roll only 1 attack dice.

I can't wait for more cards to be added to get more customization to spellbooks, but even with the limited card pool right now I think I prefer Academy to Arena.

General Discussion / [Academy] Damn it is hard to build a spellbook!
« on: December 11, 2015, 10:55:52 PM »
I made 2 spellbooks today and I must say, damn it is hard to choose what to put into them. Only 40 spellbook points is so little even if most cards are only level 1 or 2. There is so much great stuff you want in but you can't put them all into it. I guess with some play experience it will be easier to settle down to what is really important, but so far, I wanted to put like 70 points into my first spellbooks and it was no easy task to cut down 30 points.

General Discussion / I got Academy!
« on: December 10, 2015, 09:13:18 PM »
My 2 copies of Academy arrived today!

The component are amazing. The cardboard is thick but easy to punch out.
The dials are better quality and easier to assemble than X-Wing dials.
I love that the tokens are not a mix-match of random sides. They are all dissipate and on the other side they have something else.
Cards quality is good and thickness decent.

The only problem I got is the spellbooks at the bottom of both boxes got damaged. Who shall I contact to get replacement?

Spellbook Builder / Domination

So the cards are in the SBB, but there is no way to add Domination, so we can't add the cards to our book.

General Discussion / If Arena had the same cards limit than Academy
« on: August 16, 2015, 08:24:33 PM »
I am wondering how it would impact the game if Arena had the same cards limit than Academy (maximum 3x level 1, 2x the others).

I have the feeling it would have a positive effect and would certainly increase the diversity of decks.

It would increase the value of rarely seen cards because people who runs 6 dispel, 6 dissolve suddently can't have more than 3 of each, so they would get the other spells that do about the same thing.

This would also increase the diversity of creatures used in decks, so no more 4 Iron Golem or 4 Zombie Brutes, because the creatures you have to cut down would be replaced by other creatures.

Whatcha thinking?

Why Ankh of Asyra is a promo?! This need to be a regular card right now to deal with zombies!

Else, this look awesome and I like the tiles making the game a bit more portables too.

My current Necromancer spellbook. Pretty much standard stuff with couple unusual cards to deal with specific situations.

Normally, the opening will be Death Ring + Libro Mortis. On 2nd turn it will either be Shaggoth or Zombie Brute style depending if opponent seem to be heavy on control or not. I might drop an Idol if he seem to want to turtle and to trigger Bloodthirsty.

The Jelly is there to give me an edge if I face another zombie Necro.

The Angel + Defend is there to save my ass against very rushy opponent or heavy on ranged attack. It is pretty costly to have, but what is 10 SP if it allow you to not die?

Harshforge Monolith is there to obviously deal with enchantment stacking mages.

Sacrificial Altar allow me to make Plague Zombie to explode when I need it to (mainly vs a Forcefielded Forcemaster).

So far this spellbook gave me good results. It can deal with alot of situations while delivering good damage output.
