Events / Gencon Tournament News-Is Any Available?
« on: August 17, 2013, 09:56:40 AM »
Has there been anymore information released on the Gencon tournaments? If so could someone point me in the right direction. The last post I saw was Shadow's where he said the top 3 mages from the first night were 2x Earth Wizard and Beastmaster of Johktari. I assumed he meant there were 3 pods and those mages each won one.

What I'd like to see is a list of each pod and the order the mages finished and their record. That doesn't seem too hard to put together, but really any additional information is welcome.

Mages / Inspiration For The Warlord
« on: April 23, 2013, 08:03:59 PM »
Is it just me or does the Warlord remind anyone else of Caladan Brood?

Is a warlord.              Check

Not human.               Check

Pointy teeth.              Check - sort of.

Big ass hammer.       Check

Uses earth magic.     Check

Just makes me wonder about the reading habits of the AW staff.

General Discussion / Who's The Best?
« on: March 29, 2013, 06:42:58 PM »
That is my question. Who is the best MW player of the Arcane Wonders staff? I'm sure you've played some company tournaments and if not there has got to be someone everybody is gunning for.

Rules Discussion / Enchantments and Targeting
« on: February 28, 2013, 11:01:23 AM »
This question came up on the BGG site and we can't reach an agreement so I'm looking for the official word on this.

Do enchantments follow the same targeting rules as other spells or may they target anything when you play them face down? For example, can I play a bear strength face down in a zone, the purpose being to bluff it is a trap?

Edit: sorry shadow thought I posted this in the rules section.

Spells / The Forcemaster's Forcefield
« on: February 24, 2013, 12:26:54 AM »
I want to make sure I understand the Forcemaster's Forcefield enchantment. It says in the text of Forcefield that whenever you are attacked, before the avoid attack step you must remove a token, if you do, that attack is canceled. So, my questions are:

1.  Does it cancels melee and ranged attacks?

2.  Does it cancel unavoidable attacks since it is not "avoiding" the attack using a defense?

3.  Does it cancel the portion of a zone attack that attacks the Forcemaster? This is the one I'm least sure of since a zone attack doesn't target the Forcemaster, but it does still attack her.

If it does all three it's a really strong spell. Actually, if it just does the first two its a strong spell.

Spells / Elemental Cloak
« on: February 20, 2013, 07:28:22 PM »
I thought I'd start this thread based on something that came up in the fire wizard thread.

Do you like the elemental cloak?

Do you consider it a high priority target for destruction?

Personally, I like it enough to include one in every spellbook I build. Obviously this could change with time as the meta shifts. It is reasonably costed to both cast (especially with a battleforge) and include in a spellbook.

As far as destroying it goes I'd hate to put the effort into destroying it if my opponent played it. I would rather work around it if I could.

I'm curious what others think about this piece of equipment.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Fire Wizard Build
« on: February 16, 2013, 10:38:12 PM »
It seems like we hardly ever see people posting spellbooks so in the hopes of encouraging others I figured I would post one. I have been working on a fire wizard book and it doesn't look like I'm going to get to play it for a couple of weeks now so I thought I would post it instead. The elemental school is fire.

Attacks - 12
2 x Fireball
4x Flameblast
2 x Ring of Fire

Conjurations - 13
1 x Battleforge
1 x Mana Crystal
1 x Mana Siphon
1 x Suppression Orb
1 x Wall of Fire

Creatures - 14
1 x Darkfenne Hydra
1 x Gorgon Archer
1 x Huginn, Raven Familiar
1 x Stonegaze Basilisk

Enchantments - 34
1 x Agony
1 x Bear Strength
2 x Block
1 x Circle of Fire
2 x Decoy
2 x Essence Drain
1 x Force Hold
1 x Harmonize
1 x Hawkeye
1 x Jinx
4 x Nullify
1 x Reverse Magic
2 x Teleport Trap

Equipment - 18
1 x Arcane Ring
1 x Deflection Bracers
1 x Dragonscale Hauberk
2 x Elemental Cloak
1 x Elemental Wand
1 x Fireshaper Ring
2 x Mage Wand
1 x Moonglow Amulet
1 x Storm Drake Hide
1 x Suppression Cloak

Incantations - 29
2 x Dispel
1 x Dissolve
1 x Explode
1 x Force Push
1 x Knockdown
1 x Minor Heal
1 x Purify
1 x Purge Magic
1 x Seeking Dispel
1 x Sleep
1 x Steal Enchantment
2 x Teleport

The goal is to win through attrition by being more efficient with my mana and actions while limiting the opponents choices and choking his mana supply. The attack spells and creatures are there to help control the board. It is obviously a very reactive book so a large toolbox of utility spells is also included.

Turn 1
Probably move left 1 space then cast Battleforge. Play a Harmonize on the Battleforge and reveal it.

Turn 2
Battleforge casts Arcane Ring on the Wizard. Wizard uses Arcane Ring to cast Mana Crystal. The other spell to be determined by opponents actions on the first turn.

Since this is a reactive build play it as the flow of the game dictates, suit up the wizard as much as possible while responding to opponent's threats.

After softening up the opposing mage move in for the kill with the hydra, the wizard, or both.

I welcome any critiques or suggestions for shaving off the last 6 spell points.

Edit: Cut 6 spell points to bring the build total to 120. Removed 1 mana leach, 1 decoy, 1 reverse attack, and 1 reverse magic. Added a block and a nullify.

2nd edit: swapped out 1 dissolve for 1 explode.

Strategy and Tactics / Actions In Mage Wars
« on: February 08, 2013, 11:41:03 AM »
I really have 2 philosophical/strategy questions.

1.  Are actions the most important resource in Mage Wars?

I am thinking yes. Mana and mana management is very important, but to me taking more actions is like drawing more cards than your opponent in magic. It is a huge advantage as long as you are using them to achieve something worthwhile. That is where mana management and actions mingle. You have to be managing your mana properly to get any advantage from extra actions. I am calling the mages actions extra actions if he has a familiar (or creature like thoughtspore) or a spawnpoint casting something for him he would normally have to cast himself, thus freeing him up to do more important things.

2.  Are all actions created equal? By this I simply mean is your first action of the game as important as the 12th one you take?

I am thinking the importance of any single action is heavily influenced by the state of the game. So no, not all actions are created equal.

I am very curious what others think on this topic.

Edit: Of course a player could get out actioned by an opponent that has more creatures.
