League / Tournament Play / Sacramento, CA players look here
« on: June 15, 2013, 07:28:21 PM »
Hey everybody, I'm looking for players in Sacramento, CA! Maybe we can all get together on Saturday's at A-1 Comics in Roseville, and if we get enough of us maybe we can get some OP stuff going there at some point. PM me if you're interested in a regular meet up.

Seriously tho, with all of the press and good feeling about the game going around before its been released, this game will be one of the top 3 (if not the top) game for 2012 I am already sure of. I'm excited for the future of the game already.

Congrats to Arcane Wonders and all the people who have worked hard to bring this game to where it is.

Well, while its a lot like BGG, I find it much better for reviews and recording what people like and have played. I know for me, I've found games that I would never have looked at because, while they're popular and talked about a lot on BGG, you just need to look for them. I found out about Dominion and Carcassonne, for instance, on this place. I also like how you can see the average ratings for the game from the reviewers and such. Sure, BGG has it - but those numbers are ALWAYS so skewered and wrong that I don't pay attention to them for the most part.

So, its got its niche. Does it replace BGG? Nope, I don't think so. But, I think it works well hand-in-hand with BGG as an outside source. What I'd think would be great is if we could make Mage Wars the top game on that site - so people can see how great the game is going to be.

I'd really like to see how an undead spell book would look like. That could be pretty cool

Hey, if you guys didn't know about this place, Mage Wars has a page on boardgaming.com now. Check out http://boardgaming.com/games/board-games/mage-wars-core-set - basically, this place is like BGG but is more centered around reviews than news. People are able to review games, give the game a score from 1 to 10 which the average is then shown. When they write a review, they can give a star for different aspects of the game. You can even records 'Plays' and 'Likes' and such, with the top 'played' and 'liked' games on average being placed on a side bar and such.

Anyway, its a really terrific site. I suggest looking it over and signing up so that when Mage Wars hit we can place it on the top with some great scores and a great number of likes and played and so forth. If you sign up, say that Numare sent you so that I can get an achievement on the site (the site has an RPG feel of sorts where you can score different achievements to earn gold to spend on avatars and backgrounds and such).

Man, it feels like Mom and Dad just told me that I got something really cool for Christmas, but have to wait a whole month to see what it is. Oh well, I can't wait to see how the story unfolds. From what I've seen this world is very fleshed out and much more interesting that I was thinking it'd be.

Ah man, make me wish that I was able to go to Gencon this year. Hopefully the shirts and hats and such will be on sale somehow after the convention is done.

I'll have to check out Mage's Realm and talk to them once I get back to the States at the end of the month. I actually only heard of them recently so I think they opened up after I left the area a couple of years ago. Where is it exactly?

Alternative Play / Re: Thoughts on a Tournament setup?
« on: August 06, 2012, 08:21:43 PM »
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of single round elimination at all. Especially for a new game, I think its important to have players play as much as they can at a tournament - win or lose. It'd be great if there were achievement awards or some kind of participation awards that the lower ranked players could earn during a tournament.

World and Lore / Re: Wizards of Sortilege

The library had a warmth to it. Books lined the walls on all sides, different titles written on the spine in as many languages as there were books. Light poured into the library from a small window that was placed on the far wall, giving the wizard a fine view of the room. A large painting hung meticulously over the fire place, that currently had a nice fire going inside of it, and along smaller shelves were small, magical instruments and tools that the wizard had collected over the years. The wizard absent mindedly thumbed through the book that sat on his lap, his mind currently elsewhere as it was prone to do.  The page he had landed on had the image of a demon printed on its fine, weathered page. The wizard didn't need to look at the words to know it was Moloch. " Damn warlocks, they never have a new spell," he said as he slammed the book and shut and got up. He placed the book on the shelf. Stepping back, he looked at his books. He could make our books belonging to the Church of Asyra, books that belonged to Warlock and Beastmasters and other wizards too. He saw books that belonged to as many different wizards as he could count.

He turned to face the door. " I guess its time to collect another book then," he said as he began to walk out. His name is Tomasu, a Wizard of Sortilege and collector of spellbooks. He takes the books from those he defeats in the arena.

Mages / Re: Mages that you would like to see in the game

The Storm Lord - Based around Water, Lightning and Air based attacks. The Storm Lord represents the power of the Westlock navy, the Storm Lords defend the nation's coasts and seas from possible attack and always on a call for when their kingdom needs an assault by sea. With their magics they can flood different zones, making it that only special units with swimming or flying can enter that zone. Their wind magics can push and daze the enemy while their Lightning magic can be used to strike many enemies at once or to cause other problems for them. Their creatures are creatures of the sea and sky, summoning powerful kraken's and mighty griffons to their cause.

Being soldiers of Westlock, they also would have some synergy with knights and such as well.

Could you tell us a little more about the Straywood? What were the Leafcutter Wars and who was it between?

I really like the mystery behind the Bog Queen. Since the Darkfenne really don't have a representative in terms of mage's in the game yet, I find this to be a place full of speculation and guess work. I really look forward to seeing how this area shapes out.

World and Lore / Re: Arraxian Crown

The way that I see my Warlock is that he was a poor farmer living peacefully with his family. One day, a group of Ivarium soldiers approached his farmstead and wanted to spend the night there. He refused, on account of the fact that they didn't have enough room already for the three of them, but this outraged the Ivarium soldier. He ordered his men to burn down the house. As the Warlock and his family fled, his wife was killed by an Ivarium archer and his son had an arrow placed in his back. By luck, the boy was still alive - but barely. He quickly picked up the boy, jumped onto his horse and rode towards the forest.

Knowing that his son was in grave danger, he raced as fast as he could to the headquarters of the Church of Asyra, knowing that their holy magics could restore the ill and those who were gravely injured. He rode day and night, seeing his son's condition get worse and worse the closer they got. Once there, he grabbed his boy in his arms and rushes to the church. Feverishly, with the crazy eyes of a man full of desperation, he begged the Prestess' for their help. They looked at the boy, but his wounds were too grave, their hands were tied - they could not help him no more. As his son passed away in his arms, the man began to weep and cry. He stayed with his boy for a week in the Church, nobody had the heart to move him. When the time came, he slowly got up and left the Church, downtrodden and without hope.

In his heart, there burned hatred. This was the spark that would change his life. He came to a small inn nearby the Church and sat there. A strange man came to his table and asked him what's wrong. As the farmer opened up, the stranger could feel the rage that was laying behind the farmers words. " I have friends," the man whispered secretly to the farmer's ears, " we can help you. Make things right. We can't bring back your boy, but we can back the soldiers who wounded him and the Priestess' who for the most part let him die pay," the man said.

The rest is history. The farmer took the stranger up on his offer, he swore a pact to the Crown in return for the power to destroy his enemies. He tested his power out on the soldiers who burned down his house, destroying them to the last men. He hunts down members of the Church of Asyra, making them pay for their inaction. He is the Warlock. And these were his first moves in a much older and greater game.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Wizard Questions
« on: August 06, 2012, 09:07:42 AM »
Basically, if you chose earth for the mage then they don't pay a penalty for the spell to be in your spellbook. However, if you added a spell that your mage is not specialized in then you pay double the price in points, and if its from an opposing school of magic then you pay triple (I'm not too sure if its double and triple, I'm half asleep at this moment).
