In my opinion, mages' abilities that grant a creature special status (like Beastmaster's Pet or Warlock's Blood Reaper) should also give that creature the "Mage Only" trait (ex. Beastmaster's Timber Wolf Pet will have "Beastmaster Only" trait), thus making them immune to Mind Control. This will prevent some absurd situations and make it a little more thematic (for example, the Warlock's Blood Reaping Firebrand Imp is unique and different creature than the other Firebrand Imps in his army).

You can attack every legitimate object in the said range. The only exception in the "ranged attacks vs flying creatures" scenario is that you can attack flying creatures in your zone, no matter of your minimum range. In your instance, you can attack a flying creature 0 - 2 zones away.

If a creature has a quick attack with the counterstrike trait, it can use it every time it is melee attacked, regardless of the status of the action marker. You can't counterstrike if you are incapacitated.

From the rulebook (Page 6):
" Note: For this walkthrought, we're not going to use the Mages' special abilities, though you will need their ability cards so you can see the Life, Armor, and Basic Attack for your Mage. You can ignore everything else on these cards for now."
And yes, in the Apprentice Mode, the Mages don't have any special abilities.

Hello, Orco!

Battle Skill adds Melee +1 to all melee attacks of the mage.
So to answer your question: Yes, this trait adds to the attacks made with equipments.
In the walkthrought the Mages' abilities are ignored for better understanding of the basic rules.

I want to add to the question. I hope it wasn't answered elsewhere. Does Blue Gremlin with activated ability becomes hindered by enemies?
