Rules Discussion / Re: Grimson Deadeye, Sniper vs. Flying Creature
« on: March 24, 2013, 08:29:10 AM »
Arrow, I lost a match in a tournament recently because I thought the same thing about Grimson not being able to shoot a flyer in the same zone. Turns out I was wrong (would have won the match too :-( ).

Page 19, second paragraph under flying:

Quote
Ranged attacks can target a Flying creature normally. Important: Any ranged attack can always target a Flying creature in the same zone, even if the minimum range is greater than 0.

League / Tournament Play / Re: BashCon 2013 Event Discussion Thread

I've been doing some thinking about this... in my experience you can't trust other people during tournament play. Your opponent can to easily 'miscalculate' mana usage, or health usage - and there are a LOT of times where even just one mana matters. For that reason, it's very important you track both of your opponent's vitals yourself - mana and health. You also need to keep track of total damage sustained by both players throughout the game. That's a total of 4 numbers that change quite a bit throughout the game. I haven't yet experienced this so I have to speak from a place of theory, but it is a bit worrisome.

Now, on the flip side, if tracking these numbers doesn't turn out to be a huge pain - then I really like this system for tie breakers. It strongly encourages more aggressive play than the alternative (most life left), and feels pretty fair overall. I'll be going to bashcon, so I look forward to seeing the system in action and am confident that no matter what I'm going to have a good time slinging spells :).

Okay, so it's imperative that you track both the damage you've taken, and the damage your opponent has token over the course of the game on a piece of paper, since there is no way for this to be tracked using the markers. Is that right?

Also, where was this posted?

Edit: FOUND THE POST :).

General Discussion / Pittsburgh Mage Wars Announcement
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:35:17 PM »
There was an interesting post today on the Mage Wars facebook:

"Attention Pittsburgh-area Mage Wars fans! Big News Coming Soon! Let me just say, Play Unplugged ROCKS. Visit www.playunplugged.com and don't forget to give their Facebook page a 'Like'."

I just so HAPPEN to live in Pittsburgh! Any ideas on what's going on? Some kind of tourney or event I'm guessing, right? Anyone else have some ideas?

After some brief investigation, I just found out that Enrico Nardini (Editor in Chief at play unplugged) lives in Pittsburgh. Hmm :)...

General Discussion / Long Turns and Game Length Limitations
« on: February 02, 2013, 08:08:50 PM »
So this is a question more directed at people who are playing in organized play settings than just simple friendly games.

If I recall correctly, Arcane Wonders recommends a 90 minute match length limit, with the tiebreaker being he who has the most damage.

I can jive with that just fine, but a concern of mine is this - can't people just tag a player and try to stall as best they can for the time limit? Has anyone had to deal with this in OP settings? Is it apparent when there is abuse?

League / Tournament Play / Re: Starting a League in Pittsburgh, PA
« on: January 30, 2013, 11:33:02 AM »
The Pittsburgh Mage Wars league is moving, both days and locations!

We will now be playing at Gamemaster's Realm (2284 Brodhead Rd, Aliquippa, PA) on every other Sunday starting February 9th. If you can, make sure to make our first meetup as we'll be discussing the league's structure!

See you there!

Spells / Re: Quicksand
« on: January 29, 2013, 08:41:54 AM »
I'm sure that most folks will get that it's twice x, as you stated it's a standard used in a lot of places. I offered the suggestion because immediately after the spell was posted on facebook two people asked about what '2X' meant. In general I'm sure AW wants the game to be as accessible as possible, even in simple cases like this, and thought this was a simple enough solution.

Spells / Quicksand
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:00:30 PM »

So, quicksand was just spoiled on the facebook page. I've got to say I really like the flavor here (not sure how I feel about the card as it plays, I'd have to wait until I see it on the board). However, it brought up a couple concerns.

1st, would teleport free a creature from this spell? I don't see any reason why not, but figured I'd ask.

2nd, almost immediately there were questions as to what 2X means on the facebook page, is it 2 + the creatures level? I'm guessing it means 2 times the creatures level, but perhaps in the future if you just leave it X for any variable cost, and then specify that X is twice the creature's level that would alleviate some of the confusion.

Thanks a ton Thessial, my appreciation cannot be overstated :).

Getting something like a league going has been difficult and having something eye catching should be a huge help.

Player Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Soft play board (arena)
« on: January 25, 2013, 10:17:12 AM »
I'd like to toss in that I'd love a soft play mat as well (awesome idea). Once that's done I'd be able to just carry a dice bag (full of all the bits), my spellbook(s), and the curled up mat. Totally doable on the go.
