Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Air Strikes - Wizard
« on: October 15, 2016, 01:42:32 PM »
Battle Report as promised:

First, off, my opponent and I agreed to a 90 minute match with a timed one minute planning period. Just as we approached the 90 minute mark, I finished his Priestess off using this book. Here are a couple key points:

1. The most damage I carried at any point in the game was 7. Some of this had to do with some poor combat choices on his part I think. I had the the Gargoyle Sentry and both Jellies out at one point all in the same zone, and I think my Jellies freaked him out enough that he focused almost all his attacks for at least 3 to 4 rounds on the Jellies. I either guarded with the Jellies, or attacked his mage if she didn't have a creature guarding.

2. I kept the Priestess within 1 - 10 health of death almost the entire game. At one point she was down to 1 health, and had I not made the horrible, HORRIBLE mistake of forgetting about my wizard's basic melee attack she would have been defeated at the one hour mark- I fretted about this mistake the entire rest of the game and one I will never make again. Just glad I did win else this mistake would have bugged me all day!

3. This win was with the Priestess healing herself probably a total of 40+ health over the duration of the game, which started to kind of annoy me a bit. The second big mistake i made was misplacing Deathlock. I definitely cast at the right moment, but I cast it one zone too close. Had I moved my mage and placed it just one zone further away, the game would have been over around the one hour mark.

That said, here are few things I am going to change based on my opponent's play:

1. Replace both Fog Banks with Rolling Fog. I know Fog Bank is cheaper to cast if just casting one, but I think they would only last one round, where as Rolling Fog would give me three rounds, if the purpose is truly to defend against ranged attacks. Needless to say, I didn't cast them at all.

2. Replace Cheetah speed with Poisoned Blood. This is probably just from my mistake of misplacing Deathlock, but this would have been a great back up and would have bought me at least two additional actions before the priestess could have healed herself- which even with misplacing Deathlock, would have won the game around the one hour mark.

3. Remove 1 Mage Wand and 1 Dissolve for 1 Thunderbolt. Towards end-game, I lacked a spell that had that little extra bite. As many times as I had my enemy 2 - 3 measly health from death, Thunderbolt may just have provided that something little extra to finish her off.

Undecided: I'm a little undecided on Voltaic Discharge vs. Electrify. I decided to keep Voltaic Discharge in my book for another try, but because of creature placement, I wound up staggering two of my own creatures without any means to remove the condition. Again, I had used this spell as a closer, and came up 2 short, so if you have suggestions for playing this differently, please let me know!

Overall, this book is solid- and even though I made two big mistakes, those two mistakes were really my only mistakes, so I do feel like my game-play is improving. With the few changes I made for next time, I think I can shave 10- 20 minutes off the time to victory.

Thanks for the book- had a lot of fun this morning.

P.S. As a bonus, we snuck in a quick game of Conquest- it came down to just a few units at the very last planet, but I wound up winning that too- all in all, had two great victories on this rainy Saturday morning.

So far, without the Forges, the opening I like the most is
R1 Cloak - Crystal
R2 Ghoul Rot - Magebane FD on yourself
R3 Enchantment Transfusion both Curses to enemy mage

What's the benefit of casting the curses FD on yourself and using ET to move both curses to enemy mage? Hoping to learn something new here. Thanks!

Gets around Nullify. Also not as convenient to Dispel. For example, consider having Mage Bane AND Ghoul Rot AND Plagued transmuted onto you, and you only hold 1 Dispel in hand for "in case" a curse was cast on you.

Ah, great point- didn't think about ET as a way to get around Nullify. Thanks!

Trying this book Saturday morning- I'll let you know how it goes. My buddy will throw his standard guardian angels at me- thinking the teleport wand will come in handy.

Strategy and Tactics / Re: Swarmmaster (3 creatures per round)

This may sound silly but I think it can be done ... competitively I mean.

R1 19
Move
Lair in NC
QC Ring of Beasts

R2 11+2
3x darkfenne Asp

R3 11+2
3x Darkfenne Asp

R4 11+2
3x Steelclaw Cub

R5 11+2
3x Steelclaw Cub

R6 11+2
Steelclaw Matriarch

Or you could go straight to cubs and have the first matriarch by R4.

Overall, I think having 6 Asps on board ( might be a bit much ) but would nevertheless be rather scary.
They can reduce any creature's amount of attack dice to 1 in just one round.
Very hard to kill the opponent when all your attacks roll no more than 1 die :)

Should be fun trying out.

Borg- I think I've borrowed more of your ideas and books than any other person posting on this forum. Thanks for the creative ideas and approaches- it's also helped me think a little more outside the box with trying new and different things that maybe I've not considered.

Personally, I'm excited to try this with a bunch of tanglevines.

Fan Fiction / Re: An Arena match written in story format

6. Have mercy good sir! Maybe a misplaced figure of speech, I just thought that dispelling against the wardstones would put the druid severely behind manawise, and it could possibly be said that in Arena being left behind in many cases means losing, and storywise that would be a great personal defeat. I dunno, didn't think that far ahead.

And being based on a game match, I thought the name of the story (thread) was more of a description.

I think most probably took your story for what it is: fan fiction on a forum. It's not like you're sending this out to publishers or anything. I liked it.

@Keystone
It is strongly recommended that you give it a title to distinguish it from other such short stories on this site. I didn't say you absolutely had to. Losing a lot of mana from enhanter's wardstones while trying to dispel enemy enchantments could make the difference between winning and losing. So could practically everything else. The way you have it worded makes it sound like the wardstones cause the opponent to "pay dearly" as something specific to the wardstones' abilities. For newer players who are reading this it could be confusing. That being said, it is quite impressive since English is not your native language.

@Ravepig
You seem to be seriously stereotyping fanfiction. Fanfiction isn't any lower quality than original fiction. It's just that bad original fiction gets refused by publishers while bad fanfiction gets posted on the web whether or not it's crap.

And like I said the story in the OP was enjoyable and fairly well written. My review pointed out how it could be better in a constructive way, and you seem to be implying that my review was unfairly nitpicking because it is for a fanfiction.

Online publishing is still publishing. Even if the whole world isn't going to see it, any Mage Wars player who likes to read fanfic on the forums will. And if you still think fanfiction is lower quality than original fiction, I can recommend you quite a few different fan novels to you that are better than the originals that inspired them.

 ;)

Strategy and Tactics / Re: Strategy for dealing with Guardian Angels
« on: September 07, 2016, 08:52:50 AM »
Don't know why Tanglevine escaped my mind.

Probably because Tanglevine can't target Flying creatures, but a creature loses Flying when Guarding, which makes it susceptible to being targeted by Tanglevine. Then once Tanglevine is attached to the (Guarding) Guardian Angel, it then can't regain Flying due to the Restrained property of Tanglevine. And on top of that, while a Restrained creature may still Guard (and its quick-action melee attacks gain the Counterstrike trait while it has a Guard token), other creatures may ignore a Restrained Guard.

That's fairly easy to forget, imo, and requires a pretty solid understanding of the rules and conditions; e.g. hard for a beginner to grasp - not to imply you're a beginner, but just commenting that these kinds of rules interactions are one of the reasons Mage Wars (Arena) is considered to have a high learning curve.

I agree- we've still only been playing less than a year, so compared to most on this forum, I probably am at the beginner level. I knew all the rules you stated above, but you're right- they sort of escaped me when sitting down to put my book together. As Puddnhead pointed out, there are a lot of options. Glad I asked the question. Got a few solid ideas to try out.

Looks like I'll be adding a few tanglevines to my wizard book  :P

Does hiding behind mean in 1 zone? Then [mwcard=MWBG1A04]Sandstorm[/mwcard] could be useful. Especially with an arena wall in their back. That would be 5 dice per angel + good chance on daze. You could perhaps break free the Mage as well by pushing towards you and away from the Angels .

Yep, that's exactly what he does. Sandstorm is a great idea. Don't know why Tanglevine escaped my mind.

I'm needing some assistance. My buddy typically plays Priestess (which is getting kind of tiresome). I've defeated him with Warlock and Forcemaster, though is play is improving drastically. We've had several draws due to time running out. Against my wizard, I have one loss and one draw. I'm really struggling to take on his Priestess with wizard. His primary strategy is to hide behind Guardian Angels. Once those are out I'm usually trying to deal with those while he continues to build up his holy army. Ideas?

Can you only have 4 enchantment transfusions if you are not trained in arcane?

Like 6 level 1 spells if you are trained in them and only 4 of a level 1 if it is out of school...or have i been going about this all wrong?

Doesn't matter if you're trained in them or not- they will just cost you double (or maybe even triple) SBPs if you are untrained. You can have 6 of any level 1 spell and 4 of any level 2+ spells so long as you're willing to spend the spellbook points.

[/spellbook]

The book wants to exploit Enchantment Transfusion to its full capacity.

From a defensive standpoint : ET allows you to protect a stack of enchantments by giving you "instant" speed to transfer the stack of enchantments to another creature should something tragic happen to the stack bearer.

From an offensive standpoint : ET allows you to attack with TWO fully equipped creatures even though you have cast all those enchantments only once thus giving you an enormous action, mana and power advantage.

The ideal Creature for the Priestess to use this strategy on is of course the Guardian Angel.
I'm not going to go over all that creature's positives here as I reckon they're already known by all here.
One important point to mention here though, is that the GA is a flyer and that means that the Priestess has line of sight to them at all times, even when behind a wall.

And that's where our secondary strategy comes in : getting the most out of our Walls of Earth.

For starters, they are immune to the most prolific ranged damage elements in the game : Fire and Lightning making them a nightmare to get rid of for Mages specializing in that element.

Second, they are cheap to cast at only 5 mana and hold up relatively well with 8 life.

But third and most important, the Priestess is going to use them defensively by moving over and around them - with the help of her Eagleclaw Boots - to completely stay out of melee contact while at the same time being able to keep line of sight to her Angels open and thus continue her offense unhindered as well.

Possible tactics with the walls include :
- wall the Priestess/enemy mage off and simply continue your strategy
- Trick an enemy flyer into a walled off zone then play your Maim Wings on it and leave it there to rot :) ( I see you Adramelech, here kitty, kitty :) )

The Priestess can afford to take a hit or two during the early turns while she's setting up both Angels and the Enchantment stack as she will be able to evade enemy contact and heal in consequent turns.

And let's not forget her Restore and Divine Reward skills, meaning any condition counters can be dealt with swiftly if necessary.

The opening strategy goes like this :

R1-20 : Avenging Angel - Enchanter's Ring

R2-16 : cast on Angel FD cheetah Speed - FD Lion Savagery

- move Priestess closer to enemy mage, if advisable, so that the following angel can be cast in cheetah speed striking range. Try to move your Priestess as such that 1 wall can block line of sight to your Priestess as opposed to staying diagonally vs the opposing mage.
- double move Angel to NC or if possible attack, the Angel can double move and attack with 5 dice and Pierce+1 at this point

R3-23 : FD Bear Strength - FD Enchantment Transfusion
- assuming we haven't attacked yet in round two, attack with Angel, reveal BS,LS,CS : 7 dice, Pierce+1

R4-21 : Avenging Angel - Rouse the Beast
- Attack with your enchanted Angel : 7 dice, Pierce+1 (14 dice )
- Transfuse the enchantments to the second angel and attack again : 7 dice, Pierce+1 (21 dice )

R5-13 : Wall of Earth - Enchantment Transfusion
- move your Priestess in a defensive position and cast the wall to block her from the enemy
- make two attacks again : 2 x 7 dice, Pierce+1 (35 dice)

From this point on, the Priestess should play "hard to get" while continuing her support of the Angels.
If one goes down, no problem, just cast a new one.

I REALLY like this book and the strategy that comes with it! I'm actually undefeated when I've borrowed from your books- this one looks to be just as solid. Thank you!

Actually playing my arch-nemesis tonight (who coincidentally almost always plays Priestess). Don't know if I'll have time to put this particular book together for tonight's match, but I definitely will be getting it ready for my  next match!
