Title: Mage Models - HeroForge
Post by: wmcastillo28 on March 26, 2020, 03:25:41 PM
I seen a thread or two about using Models instead of cards for mages. Well Its hard to really get good matches for the types of mages we have, at least it has been hard for me. So over the past few weeks, ive been trying to create/design some off of the Hero Forge website. Now obviously, you wont ever get perfect.. But I tried to get as close as I could while capturing the "essence" of the mage at hand. Let me know what you think :)

Playing around with the models a little. Added a "Base" object for each mage just to give them all a little more character. The company is currently backlogged or whatever due to the virus stuff, so they have some test models to test the capabilities of their 3d models and my 3d printer. Going to test them to see if my printer can handle the quality of their models. I'll keep you updated :)

First batch of bought 3d models from Hero Forge!
My wife's Priestist. Turned out okay. need to get a more fine tune nozzle, but cant with the current Amazon ordering issues with our current time. Defiantly works for now though :)

My Priest model. This one was a little harder with the positioning of his arm stretched out. The support actually broke in the middle of the print, but it still ended up printing okay. Happy with the result for now. Went for the wizard for now, and will just wait about 2 weeks and do two more (they cost $7.99 US for the file after I create it on HeroForge, so about $15 every two weeks isn't to horrible. Gotta pace myself, lol)

Nice dramatic shot. We keep the QQ and Action markers on our player cards for now

Very nice!
Something like this was on my mind, but not with a 3d-printer but old-school modelling with spare bits and greenstuff.

Id like to buy some (everything) from you.

Or even better give some away as prizes in tournaments :)

Bilbofilter. This is something that I may be able to do. As of right now, I have the models all designed on HeroForge.com. But, I have to pay per file before I officially "own" it and can print it. As of this moment, i have purchased 4, and will have to wait a bit to buy more, probably a few weeks. I also need to get the settings on my 3d Printer a little better, and it needs a few new parts as well to get the models really spot on. Unfortunately, due to current world events, getting parts for the 3d printer is hard. So i'm just using what I have and getting rough models to make sure that what I have designed is what I want, and will work.
But anyways, back to your comment, this is defiantly something we could collaborate on, but it will just take some time. I'll keep this forum post page updated as I continue :)
Hopefully the two new ones will be done printing by tomorrow. Already had one failure which was a waste of a lot of filament, but that's part of the game. I'll keep everyone posted :D

So i jumped the gun and got two more of the models I designed. The Anvil Throne and Necromancer. The Warlord just got done printing this morning, the necro is printing now and of course will post pics when done. Here is a picture of the Warlord printing in progress if you were interested-

Here is a picture of the model when done printing. What is all around it is called "supports". I have to break all these off with the hopes of not breaking the model in the process. Supports are used to be able to print overhangs that hang horizontally off the model.

And here it is finished! Will take more and better photos when the Necro is done :)

New update!
Got the Anval Throne Warlord done and the Necromancer done! Necromancer actually broke in a few spots when I was trying to clean it up, and there is quite a lot of "stringiness" on the models, but a thick bristled nylon brush should clean that up (if i can find one, hard to go out and shopping due to current world issues). But for now this is all basically testing at this time. I did order some fine tip nozzles for my 3d Printer, so when those come in, i will probably reprint these anyways to try to get a little finer detail.
I'm trying to find if there is someone local to paint these up for me, but so far no luck. I'm not a 'horrible' painter, but just don't have the patience to really do it. We will see though as more time goes on.
NOW, i know I said i was going to be patient for purchasing these and this time I am. I need to at least wait till next payday. Hope to keep you updated and will of course post if I decide to put some paint on them.

Again, if you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know!

Alright, another update (TWO IN A ROW! Either I'm on it or waiting to post these all at once.. )

So when playing the games, having the models on the table instead of the art cards is SUPER amazing! It really points out who the main focus is on the battlefield and gives it way more dynamic to the game. Also, it clears up that extra "Card" on the table and cleans it up just ever so slightly.

Well, with that, it makes it a little more difficult to keep the markers and tokens near them.  When the wife and I were playing, we kept them on the stat card in our play area, but would forget things every now and then (mostly resets, but still something).

So i created some "Bases" for the models to play on. I was hesitant about doing this, because as I said, part of this was to keep the board clean, so tried to make it as minimalist as possible.

You choose which model you want to play, and i have the measurements just right to keep it pressure fit in. You can of course switch the models out as needed, so only two were needed to be made.

The action markers can then be set next to the model, and the model doesn't just sit in there one way, it can be twisted and turned to have the action markers on any side of the mode. I'm hoping with this that any status markers we will just put on the tokens (stun/daze/etc). Won't be able to field test this till the weekend, but I don't foresee any reason why this wouldn't work and improve the game!

Please comment with ideas/suggestions/likes/ whatever to keep me motivated and going! I'm doing what I can to try and keep the game alive, make sure you do your part!

IT'S NOT JUST ALL ABOUT THE OCTGN!!! :D

I've played around a bunch on hero forge, I havent printed any of mine yet, though.  I really like the base and action marker holder!

I can already see some tabletop players 3d printing them in grey and starting to paint them :D

Very nice :)
