Title: 3D Printer Projects
Post by: wmcastillo28 on February 13, 2020, 04:42:23 PM
Hi everyone! I'm still a big fan of the game, and will be purchasing a 3D Printer soon. I'm curious and wondering if anyone has done any projects with this game and their 3D Printer. I have seen the alternative Initiative token STL file floating around, and a Token holder, but that's about it. I was thinking of maybe doing 3d versions of our Wall spells, maybe some for our generic Mana Flowers, maybe even some mage models. Maybe a special token to indicate if a Flying creature is flying. Things of all that nature. Just wondering if anyone has already started little projects like this and has any insight on it.

Well it's been about a month and I'm starting to get used to my 3d Printer. One of my first little projects for MageWars was to try and improve upon the Initiative token. Wanted it to be bigger so we don't lose it in the battlefield, and that we will remember to move it every time it's needed. Also wanted to integrate the compass symbol into it to eliminate the need for another token, so it's embedded on the back. not 100% happy with it, but it will do the job and work for now.
My next project I want to work on is a modified status board. Not entirely sure on what or how to do it, so ideas would be great.

Well, I had ALOT of down time at work today, so I was auctualy able to mock up my design for a "new" status board. Below is what I got.
Starting from left to right, I wanted a spot to put my Mage stat card. I put that in, and made it a little deep so that you can set whatever corresponding tokens in with it if wanted. I also put a lip on the bottom so it would be easy to get stuff in and out of it.
Next, to the right of that, is the Health bar. I wanted it in sequence of 5 because it makes it a lot easier to count (imo). I also wanted to round it off to 50. I know it doesn't have a "Max" but have never seen in my games of anyone going that high. I made the Health and Mana portion to have little pegs going in the corresponding slots. It will obviously cover the number it's on, but that should be okay. You will also see below that I made some custom pegs for each item. Heart for health, skull for damage, and a fireball for mana. Health and Mana were made the same. I do have them counting in opposite directions. I also wanted the Mana all the way on the right, being that most people are Right handed, and its the peg that gets changed almost every turn guaranteed.
Next to that, the little box in the middle is actually the Channel status. It isn't going to be controlled with a peg, but is going to be controlled with a dial that is built inside. I wanted to keep this compact, but realistically, you could play an entire match without your channel status even changing. So i didn't want to take up real estate for a status that could possibly not even change. The dial is numbered 0-20.
As of right now, i chopped up the model below with the moving and interlocking parts and have it printing as I type this. I want to check clearances, clarity, and usability first before I do a full print of everything. It will probably take a few weeks because I'm still working with this whole "corona" virus thing going on, but be patient and be sure i'll post it if it all works out and completed!

First prototype printed. Pretty happy with it. Need to do some sanding/painting, but functionally i think it will be great. Please post your thoughts/opinions :)

Little tray for the stat car to sit in. could also put token in there as well. Made with a little lip to be able to pull card out easier. may need to make slightly bigger to accommodate sleeves when I finally get them sleeved.

This is the health/damage area. Made the max up to 50. the tokens are a heart and a skull. original idea is max life is the heart, damage taken is the skull.

same has health/damage, but with mana. wanted it all the way on the right and on its own because it's what changes the most.

Didn't want to dedicate alot of space for channel, so made a dial to be able to change it if needed.

Had the wife play a game with me using it. A couple things need tweaked, but not much. The view port for the Channel needs to be bigger. The card slot for the mage will need to be a hair bigger, because once I sleeve them they will probably not fit. And the "tokens" that we use need re-defined. Other than that, it worked out great. I'm going to finish this one up painting and junk because it has a special place in my heart being the first. I'll keep this forum updated. Be sure to let me know what you think-

Very good!
Improves playability and looking good!
Sadly the big majority of my games (currently all of them) are on OCTGN.

But I appreciate you sharing your project, keep it up.

Thanks.
I'm aware that most games are now played on OCTGN, but I just don't like that style. When I got into the game, it immediately felt like a "Gentleman's" style game, and the physical play is a big part of that to me. Luckily, my wife kind of enjoys the game (As long as I let her miss a match or two every now and then, haha). I'm hoping one day i'll have a game room and be able to host game nights and be able to introduce people into the game to have some sort of group to play. Basically, i'm trying to keep the physical game alive as long as i can, lol.
With that, i'm just trying my best to do basic, little improvements the best I can. Any ideas are appreciated.

I know this one is probably going to hit a minor sore spot for some, but as of now, the only games I've played in the past two years (physical) is with my wife. We don't really care for how long the games go, we both have a long build up (and doesn't help she plays Priestess and turtles 90% of the time)(and obviously I can't go hard on her and get her un-interested... as far as i know there is no 1 player mode.. haha) So we mutually decided to make new dice. What we decided, for a start, is to get rid of one of the blank sides and replace it with a normal "1" damage. So I designed it in Tinkercad, printed it, and painted them. We just had our first match with them today and we REALLY didn't notice to much of a difference. I know statistically that there is a difference, so I feel better knowing the odds are slightly in my favor. The only thing so far that came up on my side, is incorporeal creatures. With this, right before posting this, I thought of maybe changing it and seeing what my wife would think of maybe changing one of the two blank sides to a MW or some sort of symbol, and it would still be considered a miss, but maybe that miss would allow you to get one mana back.. I'll talk to her tomorrow about it, but i'm getting off topic..
So here is the picture of my dice! The large ones are obviously the OG ones. The yellow ones are the ones that she was using up to this point, and the small red ones are the new ones I 3d printed with the extra "1".
If anyone thinks of anything that they think would make the game new/neat/interesting/easier or whatever, let me know!

Personally I would really like to do minis and terrain and stuff. I played WH 40k in the past and it would be awesome to make a mage wars arena with placeable Conjurations and actual walls....
*sigh*
But alas, can't justify the time and ressources for that, if I rarely play a physical game.

I came from the 40k past as well! I think thats what motivated me to do most of this. I plan on wanting to do minis for the mages, and walls. Maybe some different tokens. all sorts of things we could do.

Hi ya'll! If you follow my other thread, you will see that I have made physical models to use in the Arena game rather than using the Mage Art cards. Its been a blast with the wife and I so far, but now the tricky thing is keeping the tokens nearby. So i came up with this little base mechanism to keep them all together :)
The model (mage) that your using can just slide in and out as needed, and the tokens can sit right next to the mage as needed. This helps to keep the tokens nearby and keeps them on the board. Still a better option (imo) that using the cards as it still takes up less space. Plus, for example, in a game we had the other night, my Warlord was able to be placed on top of the barracks, and did not hinder the card at all. Quite nice and makes it to where one less card (or two if both mages are in) don't have to take up so much space in a single area.
Check out the "HeroForge" thread I have for more information on the models themselves :)
