Title: Steal enchantment
Post by: Infrentree on September 08, 2016, 09:56:53 AM
Quick question on wording.

I played steal enchantment to obviously steal an enchantment.  My wife revealed nullify to stop me.  Nullify says when a creature is targeted. I said steal enchantment is targeting the enchantment not the creature therefore nullify did not affect steal enchantment. My wife says steal enchantment is targeting the creature because the enchantment I am stealing is on the creature.

Any clarification on this?

You are correct. Nullify does not work for cards that target things attached to the creature.

sidenote: dissolve still targets the mage (even though we all know you target the equipment), so nullify works for that. Crumble however targets the equipment again, so nullify does not trigger.

This is (one of) the most inconsistent/unnatural things in mage wars.  :)

Targeting questions are really easy to resolve actually. You just look at the target bar of the spell being cast. In the case of [mwcard=MW1I27]Steal Enchantment[/mwcard] you can see that it targets the Revealed Enchantment and the New Target that the enchantment is being moved to. That's it. Only those two objects get targeted.

Rarely, some spells will have additional targets listed in their effects, but these are also easy to identify because they always include the term "target". If it doesn't say the actual word "target" then it doesn't count as a target.

So, an Arcane Ward on the Enchantment being stolen would stop it, as would a Nullify on the New Target that the enchantment is being moved to. However, the original object that has the enchantment attached is never targeted and a Nullify on it will neither be triggered nor have any affect.

Thank you all! Not very often I get to tell my wife I was right.
