Title: My spellbook builder
Post by: grga.curkovic on August 15, 2016, 09:01:14 AM
EDIT:
Spellbook builder is available at http://www.spellbookbuilder.com (http://www.spellbookbuilder.com)
It includes all released Arena and Academy cards.
It doesn't support Internet Explorer (don't know about Edge, wouldn't be my money on it).

ORIGINAL POST:
Hi gals and guys,

Writing from Croatia, been playing MW for about 2 years. I've been reading forums for a while but never felt like I could contribute so this is my first post.

Spellbook builder was incredibly useful when I first started building spellbooks, but over time and extensive usage I became aware of things that could be improved.

I'm currently on vacation and a few days ago I started looking into spell builder card database code before my daughter and wife woke up. Things escalated quickly from there and I spent entire day coding and by the time I went to bed I had a fully functional spellbook builder/card database.

The main reasons for taking this effort were:
 - official spellbook builder is somewhat difficult to use on a small screen
 - I often need to skim through all the cards so I can decide what to include (I only play ~50 games per year)
 - I wanted to search cards by restriction (dark mage only, druid only etc.)
 - I recently purchased Battleground Dominations and it is not supported on official spellbook
 - importing spellbooks doesn't work (I'm a mac user)
 - accidentally reloading the page is devastating :)

I needed up with a slightly different design and implemented all the functionality official spellbook builder has plus:
 - spellbooks are stored using browser storage - they persists across sessions
 - support for Battleground Dominations
 - card restrictions are searchable (through subtype)

At the moment I'm very happy with what I've got, but I plan to add the following
 - mage cards - the main problem here is that I need to take photos of them and the sets are at my friends (we co-own then).
 - "remember" number of sets owned - defaults are currently hardcoded for sets we own, but it may not be practical for other people :)

Anyway, here goes:

During the process I used information from card database and spellbook builder and I downloaded images for all cards. I believe these things are property of AW so I'd like to get approval to share my spellbook builder/card database with the rest of the world.

If I can get approval I would be delighted to hear the community feedback, implement new features and fix bugs (there are always bugs).

Another thing I'd like to do is add more data about the cards so they can be searched based on attack attributes (Piercing, Unavoidable ...), effects (Burn, Cripple ..) and other relevant info (Defense, Armor, dice number ...). It wouldn't be difficult to add this feature but data is not available and I don't have the time to enter it manually. If I get AW approval and there is interest it can be a community driven effort.

Cheers

P.S. Hope admins will approve this post :)

Mage ability cards are on the site. Example: [mwcard=ADRAMELECH WARLOCKABILITYOUTLINE]Adramelech Warlock Ability Card[/mwcard]

You may be interested in Spellbook builder from OCTGN Mage Wars module. It already has this feature. You can search in attack bar for burn or enchantments' text for armor. It also has every set till Academy and a lot of promos.

I am really looking forward to this builder. Just from the picture, can i set what kind of Sets i have and then let dissapear the window? Its a dead space after first input. And also, mad man like me have everything twice now :)

I like that you immediatly see number of points it will cost you to add 1 spell and total amount.

Hvala Vam!

If you make it able to spit out a text file that can be read by the OCTGN importer, then this will be amazing.

Sorry for taking time to respond...

Thanks for the overall positive feedback. I'm still unclear if it is ok to release this to the general public as no official AW staff commented on this. I'd guess you have some inside connections being a playtester, is it possible for you to ask someone about this?

I'm having a hard time deciding which columns should be displayed. I want to keep the builder functional on a small screen so I can't have it all. What would be your choices? Is reveal cost relevant or could it be replaced with something more useful? Some feedback from other players will be helpful here.

I will look into OCTGN, both for using their database and exporting to their format. Exporting should not be an issue, but it will be a bit challenging to test as it seems OCTGN is not available on mac.

You just need an emulator (like Wine) running Windows to let you test it

Good luck with that! Way back, about a year ago, there was a version of OCTGN I managed to run with wine but it was very unstable. Later versions completely refused to work. I didn't try with the latest version of OCTGN and wine but I'm pretty sure that it will not work.
The only option that works for me is using VirtualBox and a valid MS Windows license of Windows 7 or higher (OCTGN dropped Windows XP support recently).
When you only need it for testing purposes you can also use one of these:

Images are hosted with AW servers. If anyone is interested I can provide an "offline" version that unzips to your computer to cut image loading times.

Really nice! I must say, i am really suprised how nicly is this builder working :)

Will it be possible to add PvS and Academy cards without pictures?
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: Donovan on August 30, 2016, 09:07:43 AM
Very nice. What would be absolutely unique would be the ability to search for card text like "flying" or "mana".
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: grga.curkovic on August 30, 2016, 10:47:55 AM
I'm glad you like it. I forgot to upload mage cards, if you check it now you should see mage ability card when mouse is not hovering over a card in the list.

I've done some work on adding more card data into the database used and it seems I have all the data needed to implement a search that would make it possible to find all flying creatures etc. At the moment you can search for cards specific to a mage or school in the subtype filter (try typing "Dark" or "Druid" into the field). I'll keep you posted.

I'm looking forward to PvS and want to add cards as soon as possible, but I don't have the card list, quantities, images... If I could get my hands on the set I would do it manually (hint to AW: get me the set :) )

I'm not playing Academy so there are two challenges: card database and specific spellbook building rules I'm not aware. If you can point me in the right direction I'll look into it.

I've updated the builder with ability to search all card text so searches like "flying", "stun", "ranged" and similar now work.

It's amazing what a bit of positive feedback does to one's motivation :)

AW might learn a thing or two from your efficiency to update online stuff.  ;D

COOL!!!

This makes it the best spellbook builder I know. Finally you can look for cards that cause Sleep for example. Or cards with Regenerate, etc..

Academy spellbook rules can be found on page 19 of the Academy rulebook (http://www.arcanewonders.com/resources/Academy_Rulebook.pdf).

If you could load files from the filesystem (graphics and metadata files), we could make it multilingual? I could supply you with the German cards, and OCR-ed text.

Some feedback:

Perhaps change the order of card types to:

Perhaps add 1 or 2 more full text search fields to allow for searches like "demon" & "regenerate".

In a private project I did I had 3 rows with 3 fields (3 x 3). Columns were AND-ed and rows were OR-ed. =;-)

Post by: grga.curkovic on August 31, 2016, 02:22:59 PM
I've changed card type order according to your suggestion (it makes sense) and fixed a small bug in search.

I'm talking to German Mage Wars Community about open sourcing the project and adding multilingual support. German version seems inevitable.

I gave some though to your request for improving the search. The proper way of doing it would be parsing the input and implementing AND/OR logic in the search algorithm. It is not a top priority now, but we'll get there eventually.

Seems this pet project is gaining traction and community support so Academy support might be coming too.

Been quiet for a few days. Had to concentrate on building a Priestess spellbook and wiping my friends Druid, and then (successfully) executing my plan. It consumed all my Mage Wars time :)

Uploaded a new version, changes:
 - added more slots
 - added highlight
 - added clear filter
 - added erase spellbook (with confirmation)
 - fixed spell data (found some errors while making a spellbook)

I hope this builder gets localized for Germany, where people still do not have a spellbook builder. If you need help, just ask.

Some suggestions:

I'm pretty sure we'll be translating to German at some point (sooner than later), project will most likely be open sourced on github before so anyone will be able to contribute.

To answer your suggestions:
1. At the moment it is no convenient due to the suboptimal way card data is organised. I need to rework this as I was lazy to do it when adding more data from different sources.
2. It is possible, but I like having them around
3. Did it
4. All sorting is done alphabetically, I like it like that :)
5. Answer to #1 applies here too
6. Did it
7. Did it (i plan to rework this and make it more flexible, use names instead of slots and enable adding as many as one wants)
8. To properly implement this some kind of server logic is needed and I don't have it at the moment. If it goes live with German community it will be a must have.
9. Did it
10. Answer to #8 applies here

Cheers

This is really nice.  I did find that the spellbook points keep getting covered by the card art on my screen.  It would be very helpful if this could be moved to the top or bottom bar to be permanently visible.

Thanks for your great work on this.

Didn't have much time so I only did what I could do easily.

Uploaded a new version, changes:
 - added more slots (@Donovan: not adding more slots this month :) )
 - moved spellbook up, just below mage/slot selection (@Moonglow: should work for you now)

@Donovan: searching for Corrode works as expected and finds Goblin Alchemist, can you please recheck this?

Next step is to get the code cleaned up and publish the code on GitHub.

Cheers

Made another small update - sets you own are now stored and persist across sessions (as opposed to loading sets I own as "reasonable" defaults) :)

Meanwhile, work on multi language support is in progress.

As soon as there are included
- academy cards released so far
- import/export (safe data)
this is actually the best spellbookbuilder there is! Great work!!!

It is a bit clunky to use via mobile phone, but that doesn't really matter as long as it is complete. I like a lot that you included mage ability cards!

For better overview I would love to see the spells that are already added to a spellbook highlighted in some way. Bold card-count or color or something like that.

For your interest: personally I would not use slots a lot. Building spellbooks is a procedure. Some ideas take some time and development. This goes on the same time for different books and ideas. contemporaneous I might play some ready books. (And I have some promos and use proxies over unuseful cards.) But I see some people like Donovan like it.

I didn't get much (visible) work done on my spellbook builder lately, but there is an improvement I included that most of you will like. Sorting by type no longer sorts alphabetically, it now sorts by spell type order most of us use in our spellbooks. Spells will also be sorted when you first open by type and name. Hope you like it :)

@bigfatchef: your spellbooks will persist across multiple sessions as long as you use the same computer. I prefer this way as it is non intrusive and "just works". It was also the easiest way of doing it without needing a script in the backend to generated and import files :D

Didn't really bother to make it work on a phone, I wanted to have something usable on a 13" laptop.

Cheers

Made another update, includes fixes for spell limits for some epic spells and fixed calculation for Druid.

I added support for PvS, scanned all the spells, entered all the data manually but I can't publish that without AW consent. I asked about it but did not get a yes or a no, they are currently considering their next steps regarding spellbook builder.

I'll put it online the moment they allow it, feel free to spam AW customer support and ask for it :)

Spamming customer service will only bother Alfiya ;-). We're looking at our options and are looking to move forward. But with BGG this week it may be next week before we have anything concrete.

I stand corrected, don't spam customer service, we don't want to annoy Alfiya :D

I'm only looking for permission to publish PvS support until AW is able to come to some kind of satisfactory solution.

I do have it up and running for me so I'm only looking to make life easier for the rest of the community.

This is pretty awesome indeed.

I am having troubles in using this tool. In Internet Explorer, the spells do not get listed on the left side, so I switched to Google Chrome where I can see them. However, I can not see all of the cards (tops only) in the bottom right corner... also I can't move from selecting a card (hovering over the spell information line) to hovering over the card picture itself without leaving the spell card.

I was hoping to find some kind of scroll bars, but I do not see that any exist. What am I doing wrong?

I would like to be able to click or double click on the detail line and pull up the card image like with the sbb here.

Thanks again for all your effort.

Hi guys,

I've posted a new version of my spellbook builder, it is still available at https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/spell-book-builder/sbb.html edit: http://www.spellbookbuilder.com (http://www.spellbookbuilder.com)

This version includes Paladin vs. Sire and Lost Grimoire.

I've been talking to AW and they showed some interest in supporting me, but they were incredibly inert (we've been emailing for more than 2 months with no action taken) so I decided to go ahead and publish without their blessing/support/approval/whatever as I saw a lot of people complaining about spellbook in the forums lately.

I've included a downloadable version at https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/spell-book-builder/SBB.zip (https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/spell-book-builder/SBB.zip) for those of you who want to use spellbook builder without internet connection (on planes, vacations...) or if you just want spell images to load faster.

Cheers

Just like DaveW mentioned I'm having problems using this tool as well.

There are no cards visible on the main left side of the screen and I can't select anything either.
Suppose I select "Incantations", then I do ... what ???
The program does nothing and shows no cards.
How do I start a new spellbook ?

Could you give us a short manual on how to
1- create a new spellbook
2- how to add cards to it
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: grga.curkovic on January 22, 2017, 11:54:02 AM
This is what the builder looks like when you first visit the page. You need to select the number of sets you own and the click hide sets in the upper right corner.

After you've done that once it should look like this when you visit it next time. Hovering your cursor over the spell will display it. There are 16 slots, each holds a separate spellbook. Spellbooks will persist across sessions if you use the same browser/computer. You can export/import, but the format (at this point) is not compatible with other builders so it's only good to move your books around and use this spellbook builder.

If you still have issues try a different (and up to date) browser. If that doesn't help feel free to PM a screenshot and I'll look into it.

What card would you like to add? A few promos or a bunch of cards (for example adding Academy)?

Paladin vs. Sire and Lost Grimoire are already included.
Yes but without pictures.

Sorry for the short post above :)

I am mainly missing a way to look at exact card texts, traits, targets, subtypes and costs and so on. My brain is not capable of remembering that all.

To build a book I mostly have a core idea. I want to check some cards for that. I want too also search for more synergies then.
After that I am most times looking through cards in school to fill needs, then through all schools whats missing, then staples.

If I am coming to the last point I start feeling the need for a calculator for 120 sbp.

So for me most important are
1) detailed card infos. Starting with picture (has all info), continue with full search for traits, targets, effects and so on.
2) all cards incl. Academy
3) sbp calculation
4) a builder with slots
5) export/import to octgn

I hope that helps you even if this is only my point of view and I can't talk for others.
I really appreciate that you are building this tool! It's a big help for the community! Thanks a lot for that !!

I'm not surprised by that answer. I work on a mac and I've tested it on Safari, Firefox and Chrome. I will most likely work if you use one of those browsers on windows too. I have no (easy) way of testing and fixing it for IE and it's not a priority at the moment. Sorry...

It's a little awkward to use on my iPhone (e.g. really small text, lots of scrolling and zooming needed to navigate between the search bars and the card names/stats, and the card image), but the fact it has the most recent Arena expansions already makes it way better than the existing official SBB. I'll probably use this as my main SBB as soon as Academy cards are in it. (Without them, I still can't build complete spell books) But very nice work so far!!

Request:
Could you put the search bar across the top instead of the bottom? That way, there would be a much smaller distance between the search bar and the top "hits" from the search. As it stands right now, they're as far apart as possible...

Similarly, could you put the card image above the book stats? This way, the SBB acts as a better card database, since you don't have to scroll to the bottom-right corner of the page after clicking on a card to preview.

In other words, have all the "critical" info near the top of the screen so you don't have to scroll around so much on small portable devices. It's nice to have a list of owned expansion sets and a sum of spell book points used so far, but I don't look at those nearly as often as I look at the card image (to make sure of card text, mana cost, spell attributes and subtypes, etc).

(Yes, I see the "hide spellbook" and "hide sets" buttons, but you don't get a card image if you "hide spellbook", and when it's revealed the card image is still below the sbp counts)

@iNano78: not really meant to be used on portable devices. What I can and will do is make the card image visible at all times even if you hide sets and spellbook. Moving the filters to the top of the page will affect usability on computers so at the moment that isn't a viable option.

@V10lentray, iNano78: I'd be happy to add Academy, but I don't own it and I don't have images/card texts. Is it available somewhere online?

Hi grga,

With success comes ... more work ;)

Requests :

1- as already mentioned above : the academy cards are still missing.
EDIT : addressed already in post above ( which you posted while I was typing this reply ;) )

2- Non-Mind creatures are currently counted double for the FM : should be triple cost.

3- Could it be made possible to sort the "Cost-column" so that it is possible to sort the book from highest to lowest cost or vice versa.

4- Same request for the "Used-column" so you can sort your book from most cards included to least cards included ( and vice versa of course )

With the help of point 3 & 4 it becomes much easier to finetune your book and decide where you might drop or add a copy of a card.

5- Is it possible to export a spellbook from your program in "Forum Code" ( like the AW SBB ) so we can post our books on the forum here ?
If yes, can you give us a short manual on how to do that ?

Thanks again for your excellent work.
You are our Mage Wars Hope in dark support days ;)

Hi borg,

1. Please see my previous post

2. I'll fix that asap

3. I need to slightly rework the code to make that possible, it's high on mu todo list

4. Could be done, but without resorting "on the fly" as you make changes (the same applies to 3).

5. Theoretically possible, but I don't know how the forum would handle cards that are not supported in official spellbook builder (best case: no preview, worst case: no game). I understand where the request is coming from, but it's not my priority at the moment (unless another 25 people ask for it).

Cards that are not supported in the official SBB just appear in the same format but you don't get a picture afaik
check Disperse, Demonhide Mask, Arcane Ward for example

The academy core spell list is on the downloads page found on the arcane wonders website, for priestess and warlock I'm not sure if I still have the spell list but I'll look.

Btw impressive SPB! I generally use octgn but this going to be my go too when I'm not near my computer to at least look up cards. Good job and keep up the good work

Hwy Grga,
Maybe a bit late, but I would totally second the idea to put the searchbar on top to avoid scrolling on mobile devices!

Yes, I have seen your reply above, but let me explain:
The biggest advantage of your tool lies in its mobility. For complex and comfortable spellbook building I would still take octgn. The UI is very good there in my opinion besides very minor things.
But what the community was missing so badly was a builder for instant moments. You have an idea at work - look it up. You have an card text issue in a discussion - look for the card. And so on. THAT is for me the best part of spellbook building to think through ideas whenever you want. And that is the point where your builder shines and it would shine even brighter with optimization for mobile use (without destroying the usability for computer).

And of course academy is the missing part right now :)
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: grga.curkovic on January 23, 2017, 04:17:55 PM
I did most of the work needed to include Academy, I'm just missing spellbook lista for expansions.

Regarding mobility - my primary reason for building this sbb was my personal use. OCTGN didn't/doesn't work on a mac and official sbb is crap (can't browse spells quickly, doesn't work well on my 13" screen) and was missing expansions.

I understand your requests, but html is something I don't enjoy and don't usually do (I'm a cpp developer) so making a mobile UI is something I'll try to avoid by all means. However, if someone else wants to do it, I'll bring them up to speed on my code and assist them as much as I can.

Next request:

Once you get all the "important" stuff done - like adding Academy cards :) - perhaps you could update the outdated text / card images. For instance, the Goblin Builder image in your SBB, which I'm guessing is just lifted from the official SBB/card database, has outdated text. His "Repair" ability now reads:

"Remove 1 damage from a Corporeal conjuration in, or boarding, his zone." (sic)
Reference (http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=16865.msg70167#msg70167)

It's up to you whether or not you want to have the typo in the searchable text, or if you prefer to spell "bordering" correctly. But it would be ideal to have the card image from the most recent printing. Perhaps the most recent images are available in the OCTGN builder (?).

There are other cards that might need text and image updates (like Gate to Hell (http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=15542.msg74433#msg74433)?).  Here's a list of changes made in the 4th printing:
http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=17282.0 (http://forum.arcanewonders.com/index.php?topic=17282.0)

And you can always check for updated/errata card text in the official rules supplement/FAQ:
http://www.arcanewonders.com/resources/Mage_Wars_Official_Rules_and_Codex_Supplement4.2.pdf (http://www.arcanewonders.com/resources/Mage_Wars_Official_Rules_and_Codex_Supplement4.2.pdf)
Title: Re: My spellbook builder

next request ;)

Would it be possible to create a "total cost" column next to the "cost" column and also make this "sortable" up and down.

I noticed the "cost" colum indicates the amount of SBP's it costs to add 1 card to that mage's spellbook but it is even more important imo to see how many SBP's of a certain card you have added to your spellbook.

I'm really trying to keep the amount of requests to a minimum, just focusing on the most important with regards to spellbookbuilding.
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: grga.curkovic on January 24, 2017, 10:04:05 AM
@iNano78: I'll do that as soon as I'm done with Academy.

@ Borg: It won't fit the reference screen size (read: my screen size). The issue I'm having is not the width needed for one more number but for one more name in the header row. Any ideas on how to fix this?

A rather drastic measure maybe but from all the columns, I think the "cast" and "reveal" columns are not really "must have" columns for a SBB and could possibly be removed to make room for "total cost" and something else.
When you mouse over the screen you can see the "cast" and "reveal" cost from the picture.

Another possible suggestion : would using a smaller font help you create more room ?
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: grga.curkovic on January 24, 2017, 01:31:56 PM
I've added all Academy cards, just waiting for someone to give me a card count for Princess and Warlock expansions and I'll publish it.

@Borg: Font is already as small as it can be (for me not to hurt my eyes:). I'll see if I can recombine cast and reveal into one column so it would be like 2+5 for Enchantments. That should give me enough room to add total cost.
Title: Re: My spellbook builder

So... I posted an update that contains Academy cards (including expansions).

I've also implemented Borg's suggestion merging Cost and Reveal into one column and adding Total.

Make sure to refresh the page a few times to get the browser to really download the updated version (instead of using a cached one).

Columns right of Cast are still not sortable, this will take some more work.

Next up: errata checkup

Meanwhile, there is no Cursed Item entry alphabetically where it should be, nor can I find Cursed Item's card art.

That's maybe an issue but the "cloak of fire" doesn't work with warlocks. We can't select it maybe it's related to the mention "fire mage only".

A couple of bugs I've found:

- spell levels aren't consistent. For example, Enchanter's Ring is "1|1" but Chant of Rage is "1".
- sorting by, say, card name, then by type, won't give you cards sorted alphabetically by name within each type. In fact, I can't figure out what the default sort orders are. For some reason, it really likes putting Faith Healer's Staff first.
- sorting by mana cost goes, 0, 1, 10, 11, ..., 2, 2+0, 2+1, ..., 20, 21, 22, ..., 3, 4. e.g. sorts alphabetically rather than numerically (with 10 < 2). I realize this is tricky with the enchantments being 2+X.
- sorting by card level goes 1, 1&1, 1|1, 2, etc. It would be nice if 1|1 < 1&1, since the game counts 1|1 as a level 1 card while 1&1 is really level 2 (and will cost most mages 3+ spell points unless they're trained in both schools). Example: Battle Forge is 1&1, but no current mage pays less than 3 sbp's for it. Meanwhile, Enchanter's Ring is 1|1, and no current mage pays more than 2 sbp's for it (since no mage pays triple for both Nature and Arcane), and several mages only pay 1 sbp for it.
- If you repeatedly click to sort by card name, nothing happens (e.g. doesn't sort in reverse order or anything)... which is fine. But if you repeatedly click to sort by another trait, the order keeps changing in a way that I can't figure out... maybe shifts the spells up one spot in the list? Anyway, seems odd. Not sure if it's really a bug. But i'd prefer if you could sort alphabetically by card name within a given spell type, or by spell level within a school, etc. e.g. choose to sort by one trait within another trait, like the official card database does.

@iNano78: I agree that overall sorting needs to be done "better". I took a look at the issues you are having and they are browser dependant. The sorting works quite nice "as is" in Safari, but it does not in Chrome. This happens because browsers implement sort algorithms differently, in this case it appears sort in Safari is stable while Chrome sort is unstable (it is a CS term and describes if order of elements that are equal according to the sorting criteria is preserved).
I'll see if I can "quick fix" this, but in order to do it properly I need to change the structure of the data (also needed for translation to other languages).

@Borg: good to hear

@steack: I didn't add Academy mages...

Academy cards have now been added!

Is there a way to add promo cards? I know it might be tricky if people are using this tool for tournament decks, but for casual play it would be nice to include them.

I built a Priestess book last night that has an active Alfiya, Noble Enforcer on Turn 2, and smashing face on turn 3.

That might be Risky... if the link ever gets out people will see stuff they shouldn't. Also cards in playtest sometimes change 3-4 times. anything from level, to mana costs... anything can basically change.  that would mean you would be constantly updating the special playtest builder.

Not that it wouldn't be amazing to have. Sometimes counting by hand is a P.I.T.A.!!!

Incomplete data entries:

I just noticed that several of the Legendary Academy creatures with names of the form "___, ___ ___" are missing the comma and everything thereafter. For example, "Tarraki, Thousand Bites" is just "Tarraki". Same for Rajah, Aurora Lucere, Ehren, Gloranna and Slavörg (who also needs an umlaut). Doesn't seem to be a problem for Arena creatures, though (e.g. Cervere and Otto and Gurmash and Togorah and Alandell and Adramelech and Artemis, etc, are fine; same for non-creatures like Mohktari, Sectarus, ). And for some reason, Drakas and Mhegedden are OK despite being from Academy.

An updated spellbook builder is what I've longed to see for so long!

A small bug to report

Leviathan Scale Armor - shows up when I filter by "Holy School", should be Water.

Had a quick skim through all the other spells, all look to be in correct schools when filtered.

I noticed this morning that it isn't currently easy to look up all the Walls or all the Terrains. Using the sort function doesn't seem to distinguish between spell types "Conjuration," "Conjuration - Wall," and "Conjuration - Terrain." Also, the search at the bottom doesn't look at the spell type, only spell name, subtype and text (?), so if you search for "Wall" or "Terrain" you only find spells that mention those words in their text, so you'll miss many of them. It would be nice if the sort would separate the 3 types of Conjuration, or if the drop-down menu at the bottom included these types separately, or if they were captured when searching for those words.

@iNano78: Point taken - action taken, new version uploaded

@Raiko: Thanks ;)

New version contains these 2 changes:
1. I reworked the search slightly and the search everything box now does what you want it to. Up to now searching required "exact phrase match" and included attacks, traits, text and subtype. I've changed and it now requires "exact word match" and it includes card name and card type. It will give you more results now, but is also more flexible (for example if you want to find attacks with unavoidable and ethereal you can type in "unavoidable ethereal", this did not work in previous versions).
2. fixed mismatched attributes for two spells

As always, make sure to hit reload a few times to get the latest version instead of the one your browser cached. I'll fix this at some point so you don't have to bother but there is more important stuff to do at the moment :)

An improvement I'd like.
Is it possible to get an option to hide/filter cards based on either:

1. Card is N/A for the mage in question. ie, "Warlock only" when I select Priest. Maybe even extend it to having a dropdown at the bottom, so I can select from the cost of spells (so an option for "not N/A", then each individual points number)? When building a spellbook, it would make it easier to spend that final 1 or 2 points.
2. If I don't have the set listed as one I own? So I have the option to only see cards I actually have in my collection? An advantage of this would be that the builder would work easier for making Academy decks, since you could only select that you own the Academy sets.

And one tiny change. Can you add a link to the spellbook builder to your first post in this thread?
Just to make it easier for anyone new who happens by this thread?

This is a good idea. Maybe in the "show sets" tab, beside each drop-down menu for counts, there could be a on/off toggle for whether you want to see cards from that set or not - which, as Rodge mentions, would be handy when building Academy books, or for those who don't want to see Domination cards, etc. Will also be useful if/when promos get added to this builder, since you might not want to see promos when building a book for a tournament or from your physical card collection.

Made another update adding errata. Used the file available at AW web, all cards listed there now have a yellow exclamation mark next to them and errata is listed below the card. Made another small change - when you "hide spellbook" it still displays total spellbook cost. I would recommend hiding both the spellbook and sets once you select your mage and start building a spellbook so you can see the important information in the right bar.

@Rodge, iNano78: I wil definitely add this, but this will come along with sorting by used/cost/total/max/own after I rework some code.

@V10lentray: I don't think I'll be adding this, sorry.

Cheers

I like a lot your errata addon!

How about highlighting the spells used in the selected book. In the spellbook om the right there are sums, but no list of spells. In the whole list i get pretty lost searching the spells already added. The “used“ column is pretty small and in the middle of all.
So highlighting background by changing the used colour would be very handy for example. Or a filter or both. Until now you did such a great job, I guess you would a good solution of you like the idea ;)

(Btw i would still prefer the search bar on top for mobile use, but I try not to annoy you with that question again  8) )

This keeps getting better and better and I must say I use this SBB on a daily basis now.

Looking forward to having the "used", "cost" and "total" columns sortable.

The "cast" column is sortable already
but it still puts 10+mana costs ahead 2 mana costs
and all enchantments end up in the 2-cost area.

Suggestion :
all enchantment costs are currently indicated as "2+0" or "2+1" etc or " 2+x" for variable costs.
Since we all know that enchantments have a Face Down cost of 2 and a variable reveal cost, I was wondering if it was really necessary to use this "2+.." indication.
I think it might be more advantageous to simply indicate the total casting cost just like the other cards.
( so, simply have 5 instead of "2+3" and 12 instead of "2+10" and X instead of "2+x"etc )

This would give you a better view at your "mana curve" imo.

Maybe it's just me but I find these different "looks" at your spellbook ( sorted by cost or total sbp's or amount added etc ) very useful to help you streamline and balance out your build.

To be consistent it should be 3 where there is 2+3 right now if x should replace 2+x. In other words cost for enchantments would only show reveal-costs.

Or just put the reveal first:
3+2 (Bear Strength), 2+2 (Rhino Hide), 0+2 (Brace Yourself), 5+2 (Reverse Attack), 10+2 (Forcefield), etc. This way, it should sort by the reveal cost, with enchantments at 3+2 considered more expensive than non-enchantments at 3.

The tricky part still is getting 10 to come after 9, etc.

If you had some spellbooks saved previously they will not be available once you start using the new domain new so I would suggest to export them using the old url and import them into the new one. This is a side effect of using local browser storage...

Hi grga,

I use your builder on a daily basis now.

The three most important features still to be added at this point imo

1- sortable columns
2- a way to export the book to notepad or any other word program in a format that allows you to post your book on the forum
3- a way to print your spellbook ( just spells and number )

Do you have any update on those features ?
Thanks in advance.

I just noticed that most of the "Conjuration - Wall" spells don't have "Wall" in their type (with the exception of Coral Barrier). For example, if I type "wall" in the "search everything" field, it doesn't find [mwcard=MW1W01]Fog Bank[/mwcard], since its spell type is listed as "Conjuration" only.

Conjurations subtypes were never consistently marked in the official spellbook builder, OCTGN and other sources I've used. I've changed the type for all walls into "Conjuration - Wall" and I've done a similar thing for terrains perviously.

Update had been pushed to www.spellbookbuilder.com (http://www.spellbookbuilder.com), however I won't be updating the old url - take it as an incentive to start using www.spellbookbuilder.com (http://www.spellbookbuilder.com) if you haven't done so already.

Just noticed Woolly Rhinoceros is spelled incorrectly.

There's also still a glitch related to long-named Legendary creatures with nicknames: Aurora is currently "Aurora Lucere, Dawnbreaker's Chosen Aurora" with the first name repeated at the end. Same thing for Tarraki, Ehren, Gloranna and Slavörg (who could stand to get umlauts).

I love this sbb as it is a portable possibility to look up cards. But I don't use anything else than that, since I have all my books saved in octgn format as standard and don't want to do the work twice. An import/export to octgn would at least double the worth of this site for me :)

It seems everyone is very keen on import/export so I'm close to making that effort :)

I don't have OCTGN, can someone send me a couple of spellbooks exported from OCTGN so I can check the format?

An export to .txt and an export as forum spellbook would also be very nice.

I really appreciate you taking the time to provide the players with a functional and up to date SBB.
Thank you very, very much!!!

Hey grga,

thanks a lot for your time and help!

OCTGN saves spellbooks by default with cardname-trash thats unusable outside of OCTGN. Like that:

<deck game="9acef3d0-efa8-4d3f-a10c-54812baecdda" sleeveid="0">
  <section name="Mage" shared="False">
    <card qty="1" id="e0a0b790-fbfb-4a08-a12e-77e415134391">Johktari Beastmaster</card>
    <card qty="1" id="f248612c-0328-4ca0-b9ec-f719da169cfc">Johktari Beastmaster Stats</card>
  </section>
  <section name="Attack" shared="False">
    <card qty="1" id="590a9343-4aff-45e7-971d-43c1ec3c0e74">Force Hammer</card>
   .....

If I take the spellbook and validate its 120 allowed points it gets instantly copied to clipboard exactly like that:
"
A Mage Wars Spellbook, built using the OCTGN SBB 09.04.2017 23:15

Spellbook points: 120 used of 120 allowed

1 - Mending Wave - 1 - 2 - 2
1 - Crumble - 1 - 2 - 2
"

But if you take that same OCTGN can NOT import that.

But it is quite intelligent:

1) it can read code from this forum. enter a url and you get the whole spellbook on this site perfectly imported. I dont know how that is working.

2) It can read card names. Thats the way to go via .txt.
As user you have to enter all types of spell separate, but that should not bother you. But you can write lines like that to get them imported:
"
beastmaster
beastmaster stats
2 surging wave
3 acid ball
"
Just all the names have to be spelled correctly. Quantities in front of names work perfectly.

hope that helps for the beginning. I'll play around more to see if it is possible to divide card types in a clean and good looking / readable way.

EDIT: There is a deckconverter.dll included in OCTGN. I can't open it with a normal editor, so I don't know if that could help you. Do you want to see it? I can send it to you.

EDIT 2:

importtests to OCTGN:
1) ---  Incantation  --- (like export) does nothing. no help.
2) 1 - Raincloud - 1 - 4 - 4 (like export) does nothing.
2a) 1 swell     is working
2b) swell 1     is working as well (qty at the end)
2c) 1 swell 2    is giving me an error of 1 buggy card name of that "swell 2" card. -> qty in front is better.
2d) 1           swell    is working so number ob blanks in between don't count.

I guess the best Format is very clean and easy
"
Johktari Beastmaster
Johktari Beastmaster Stats

---  Attack  ---
1 Force Hammer
1 Electrify
1 Swell
1 Acid Ball
1 Jet Stream

---  Conjuration  ---
3 Tanglevine
1 Battle Forge
1 Tooth & Nail

Hi grga,

Could you check the "export to forum" function, please ?

Some book slots, like slot 1 & 3 produce errors while slot 10 for example is without errors when using this function.

The errors include missing cards, like Elephant Grass simply not showing or complete parts just gone missing like this for example.
Slot 3

Could you add a way to Import Forum post format Spellbooks as well? Same format you export them, just import. Or do I just not see it?

With that feature sharing and organizing books would be perfectly implemented.
Title: Re: My spellbook builder

I gave it a try, it's online.

Importing is really messy as you have to deal with a lot of crap you and other exporters did.

There are most likely bugs and errors, I did some testing but I rely on the community (read: you) to do most of the testing as am I one lazy bastard. Let me know what I fu**ed up this time. :)
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: bigfatchef on April 18, 2017, 11:30:12 AM
right now I see 3 ways of import:

file import - does nothing (i guess that is meant for your own export file import)

forum import - i copy the loaded clipboard with octgn export (thats how you get forum post) and instead of 120 sbp my book has exactly 1 card only. a force push.

text import - "could not detect mage type" . no difference if i try to import .txt file or forum post here.

so far no luck. But keep on trying! It will be so great if this gets usable!

Do you have an estimate, grga, when it would be possible to sort all columns ?

And finally, what would make your spellbook really perfect imo : would it be possible to add pictures to all cards in forum code ? The "old" cards still generate a pop-up picture but all the "new" cards are not linked to their picture.
Would it be possible to do that ?
Title: Re: My spellbook builder

I don't have any definite plans (timelines) for sorting columns. I have another pet project I have to attend to at the moment.

I can make all the cards previewable in forum only if I have access to forum javascript code and I doubt AW will let me have that :)

Well, that's a start :)

The "total" column doesn't sort properly though.
"Used" and "Cost" work OK
sorting "max" and "owned" is not necessary really.

Hi,

I got a domain name so you can now access the builder on www.spellbookbuilder.com (http://www.spellbookbuilder.com)

If you had some spellbooks saved previously they will not be available once you start using the new domain new so I would suggest to export them using the old url and import them into the new one. This is a side effect of using local browser storage...

I'll keep the old url alive for some time to let everyone transition smoothly.

Cheers
How did you come up with that name? It's so creative! So abstract.... It will be hard to remember it!  8)

Serious: really nice! I am surprised that this name was free to have. As if there has never been any spellbookbuilder in the internet before. Good find!

LOL. Sure beats http://www.unofficialfanmademagewarsspellbookbuilderandcarddatabase.pleasedontsueme.ru or something like that.

Would have been better as mwspellbookbuilder.com imo

No complaints? No requests? Is it possible that everything is working fine? :)

I added some basic google analytics a few weeks ago just to see if anyone is actually using the spellbook builder.
It turns out there are 33 sessions on an average day and about 90 people are using the spellbook builder on a weekly basis. It is more than I expected to be honest and I'm quite pleased with the results.

Cheers

Well, if you insist...

Would be good to be able to toggle between "Arena" and "Academy", with "Arena" showing all cards and promos while "Academy" only shows Academy cards and promos, limits you to 40 spell book points, and applies other Academy spell book building rules (e.g. triple cost schools apply to Novice for Priestess and Warlock), and having Academy mage cards/abilities. Should be independent of what sets you own (e.g. shouldn't have to claim you own "0" Arena sets in order to switch to Academy spell book building mode).

That's not correct. Novice trait in academy is the same as in Arena. The warlock and priestess have ability cards that specifically state that they pay triple for enemy school spells even if novice. The Beastmaster does not.

That sounds like a really good improvement. I ordered all three academy sets a few weeks ago, but am still waiting for the last one to arrive. Once I have them I'll check the rules and I'll add the academy mages to the list. When academy mages are selected you will only be able to use academy spells and spell cost will be done properly for each mage. Sounds good?

I would still live to have the searchbar above the table not below. I use your builder exclusively on a mobile phone. Everything is working perfect with that. The only thing is that I scroll up and down the whole time.

Since you already stated that you want to keep the bar down there, maybe a solution would be to fix it at he bottom so that the bar is always visible and is detached from the table (so you only scroll cards)

I've looked over every setting I can think of on the two computers and can't find what is different. One is just a newer version of the same dell computer. It still works fine on the old computer. The arcane wonders spell book builder works on both computers, but no offense intended to them, I prefer yours. If I figure out what setting or software is causing the issue, I'll post it. Neither is running any plugins to the chrome browser. Both are running the exact same chrome version 59.0.3071.115 64 bit. Other scripts (such as this forum) are working fine. Both are personal computers, so no blocked software or anything like that. All I can think of trying at this point is to reinstall it. I'm going to do that now. If it works, I'll post.

Uninstalled chrome, restarted, reinstalled chrome, now it works.  If cars were computers there would be a service station every block.

For some reason, Academy Warlock and Priestess don't appear as avaliable sets. Is this just on my end or what?

I'll do it as soon as I have spell images...

Hi everyone,

didn't forget about you guys :) Just added Academy Forcemaster and Warlord to www.spellbookbuilder.com (http://www.spellbookbuilder.com)

For a moment there it seemed like AW is going to help me out by providing spell images but in the end nothing happened so I did it on my own (again).

Since I did most of the work manually it's likely that I fucked up somewhere, let me know and I'll fix it.

Cheers

Thanks :)

If you email AW directly and tell them that spellbook builder is an important tool for Mage Wars and that they should support it they might do something about it.

Hi grga!  Thanks again for all of your work on this.  I found out that Redistributed Power is called Mind Seize in the cards list, but the image is correct.  There is also a Mind Seize.

I also do not see Telekinetic Bomb on the list of available enchantments

Hi grga!  I found the subtypes "Troll, Soldier, Pitfighter" on Wychwood Ranger  It should be "Wood Elf, Soldier".  I'm really liking all that you've done with this builder!

Hi Grga, the Gorgon Spearthrower (Academy Core promo) is actually level 2, it's only level 1 in spellbookbuilder.com.  The preview image they first released was incorrect and was later corrected.  Would be good to at least update the level and cost and if possible update the image as well.  An updated image can be found here for example: http://www.arcanewonders.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/PROMOScorrected.png

Great job on the builder, thanks for providing this.

Very minor, but there are two entries of Royal Armorer: the new version from Academy Warlord (Level 1 holy OR war), and the old promo version (Level 1 holy). The promo should be removed, as has been done for other "obsolete" promos that have since been released (with or without updated card text and stats).

Thanks for pointing this out, I'll do that. Before I get to it please let me know if there are other promo spells that should be removed for the same reason. List of spells currently marked as promo: Altar of Peace, Elfric's Life Ring, Mana Vampirism, Staff of Storms, Debilitate, Holy Strike, Acid Blast, Bloodthirsty Strike, Flame Strike, Lightning Strike, Leather Belt, Ring of Healing, Spiked Armor, Heart of Gravikor, Pharaoh's Cheetah, Asto Vidatu, Angel Slayer, Dragonclaw Wolverine, Death's Head Scorpion, Bloodwave Greatbow, Lightning Beetle, Screaming Zombie, Victorian Griffin, Eeker, Bind Spirit, Hidden Tunnels, Reinforce, Ankh of Asyra, Blur, Alfiya, Noble Enforcer, Sherean Leviathan, Gorgon Spearthrower, Shock, Bound Healing, Cowardice, Miss, Royal Armorer, Sanctuary, Servant of Malacoda, Silverclaw Ratel, Stench of Death.
Thanks

I'm fairly sure Royal Armorer is the only card on the list above that has been released in an expansion (so far).

For promos that become released, I'm not sure if you want to include errata describing differences between the promo version and released version, for players who might play with copies of the promo. For instance, Ballista is now Unique and Warlord Only, Wall of Force has 4 life instead of 3, etc. Other "former promos" that could be checked for changes include Spiked Buckler, Fire Elemental, Magma Golem, Leviathan Scale Armor, Galador, Gravikor, Raincloud, Gale Force Ring, Sersiryx, Summoning Circle, ... There's a list on BGG.

Thanks for the great spellbook builder. Was excited to find it.  I did run into one problem when I was trying to make a forcemaster.  Force Wave would only let me go up to 5 copies.  I thought I could get 6 of that?  Thanks.
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: sedawk on November 22, 2017, 11:29:34 AM
Ah I think I see. It thinks I only own 5.  I haven't looked but I guess that is the max if you own multiples of all the set?
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: grga.curkovic on November 24, 2017, 01:39:50 PM
@sedawk: It won't let you use more spells than you actually own, I think it's quite practical if you are making spellbooks you actually intent to use in real life. Glad you like it.

@iNano78: I'll see what I can do once I get an hour or two to work on it, thanks for your inputs.

Hi all,

Does anyone know the easiest way to export from spellbookbuilder to OCTGN?
Is it text export => then import the text per section? (bit of manual work)

Was wondering if there is a better way.

Cheers!

Hi. Love the spellbook buider. Thanks for the great resource!

Might have found a bug: It seems you can only have 4 of the "rust" spell, even though it is level 1.

Hi. Love the spellbook buider. Thanks for the great resource!

Might have found a bug: It seems you can only have 4 of the "rust" spell, even though it is level 1.

It is limited by the number of sets you say you own.  Have you tried upping the count of that expansion and seeing if you can increase the number of Rust in your book?
Title: Re: My spellbook builder
Post by: LordTengil on March 02, 2018, 06:27:47 PM
Yes.

"Rust
...
total 4
max 4
own 6 "

I can't increase it more, as max is on 4.

Hi Biblo,
This is an excellent deckbuilder.
If it isn't working, that means your probably using Internet Explorer.
Install Google Chrome and open it in that browser, it will work fine.

Hi everyone,

An update has arrived adding support for Druid and Elementalist, long overdue ... sorry about that, will try to be more up to date in the future.

On the bright side, I changed the way I add spells to the list making it easier, faster and less frustrating so I should be able to add spells faster in the future (and also avoid procrastination) :)

Got a tip that one promo spell is missing from the builder, if anyone has a decent quality "Leather Helment" image please send it over and I'll add it.

Cheers
