Title: The League of Extraordinary Mage Warriors
Post by: SharkBait on May 06, 2016, 03:09:31 PM
Greetings!
I am Shark bait, and I wanted to gauge the interest of the community in the following proposal.

I would like to put together a Mage Wars league for play via OCTGN. The current idea in my head is that if we can get 10 interested and committed players, we can play a round robin schedule (everyone plays each other player once) on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Once those 9 weeks (or 18 if we do bi-weekly) are up, the players in the top 4 of the standings will play-off in a double elimination style tournament to determine the league's winner. If successful, more seasons of the league will follow with a possible expanded player pool.

I was planning on having everyone schedule their own matches with their opponent due to potentially large differences in time zone, and then posting a battle report of the match. If there is sufficient interest in this league, I will gladly flesh out the rest of the details. Post either on here or message me if you're interested.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alright,
After some last minute shuffling around, I think we're ready to kick this off. We have 15 participants in the league. Once everyone has played 14 matches (One against each other player), the top 4 records will go into a double elimination playoff to determine the winner of the first season of The League of Extraordinary Mage Warriors.

A couple of quick notes:

Scheduling:

I will list everyone's name and their first 3 opponents here and will update the front post. Everyone has 3 weeks from 22 May to play their first 3 opponents and report the result back. This gives a bit of scheduling flexibility so you can knock all 3 out right away if you want to (or have a week that's better than others). Any matches not reported will be counted as a draw for both players. If you have tried to contact your opponent and receive no response within a couple of weeks, let me know and I'll give you the win by forfeit instead.

Card Pool:

Any card available on OCTGN at the time of the match being played is legal for a book. Promos will be allowed as they are with the following exceptions: If the card has been released and has changed, the released version takes precedent. Ballista will be counted as Unique and War Mage Only.

Standings

Standings can be found >>HERE<< (http://challonge.com/748qoah4)

Mages
You can use any mage/book you want for each match. There is no restriction.

Alright, we're now into the second phase! If you haven't played your first 3 games, you still have time. However, you should get a move on! Prizes are at stake!

Suggested opponents for 12 June - 3 July:

1. Drefan :RomeoXero, Ad_Yer, gaspode77

2. Schwenkgott : Drmambo, Ad_Yer, RomeoXero

3. Frozen : BigL16, Kaarin, Biblofilter

4. Biblofilter : drmambo, Ad_Yer, Frozen

5. Coshade : gaspode77, Sharkbait, Kaarin

6. Kaarin: Juli, Ad_yer, Coshade

7. DevilsVendetta: gaspode77, Schwenkgott Biblofilter

8. Sharkbait: BigL16, Coshade, Sailor Vulcan

9. Juli: Kaarin, Biblofilter, Schwenkgott

10. gaspode77: Coshade, DevilsVendetta, BigL16

11. Ad_Yer: Biblofilter, Schwenkgott, Kaarin

12. Sailor Vulcan: Sharkbait, Kaarin, Schwenkgott

13. Drmambo: Biblofilter, Juli, RomeoXero

14. BigL16: Frozen, Sharkbait, gaspode77

15. RomeoXero: Ad_yer, Drefan, drmambo

Prizes
I have also decided that the following prizes will be given out:
- The top 4 in the regular season will all receive their choice of Priestess or Warlock Academy
- The two mages who play in the final playoff match will receive the other in addition to their choice for making the playoffs (So the top 2 mages will receive BOTH academy sets)
- The Winner of the League of Extraordinary Mage Warriors season 1 will receive a copy of The Lost Grimoire in addition to the two academy sets and a Trophy to go with it (picture not available yet).

A note on rerolls: If you roll the wrong number of dice, just reroll with the correct number of dice and treat the first roll as if it didn't exist

If there are any questions/concerns/I messed something up please let me know.

Question: is this open to all continents?

I ask because I would have to play my games after 7pm EST...    which complicates things with the European players :/

Open to everyone, and I figure we can be flexible on match dates. If you are against a European opponent, you may just have to schedule a weekend or something. It's between you and your opponent :)

My availability varies a LOT, and I only know my work schedule about a week in advance. Would "at least once a month except on really busy months" be acceptable?

Acceptable is up to you. If we run with it weekly, you'll have to forfeit once in a while, but if you're ok with that then it won't bother me. I want to keep the games semi regular to ensure that it doesn't fade out

I'm in.
I hope that the battles won't be timed though. In the course of ADMW I discovered that my computer is a bit too old for OCTGN, as it freezes for few minutes during reset phase (and recently they dropped the support for my Windows).

Is there any reason to limit the number of players?

A 12 round monrad tournament were you have to play all the mages sound cool - and would force someone like me to play a few mages I never tried or really don´t have a high opinion on. :)

That way we could have a few hundred players in this tournament  ;)

There are currently nowhere near a few hundred Mage wars players who play on OCTGN. I don't think there's ever been more than ten on a given day, and nowadays I can usually only find 0-2 players on a given day, and half the time they're already in a game or playing something else, or they just forgot to close out of OCTGN.

I'd be interested, not sure whether I would prefer weekly or bi-weekly though.

10 was just a starting point for discussion. If I got more than 10 interested I was going to look into expanding. Seeing as we're basically at that number now, I'll start writing the formal details and post here when I've finished them

Alright, I need some input from everyone who wants to be involved.

I've come up with a few different formats, let me know what you think you'd rather do for Mage selection.

1. Completely open each week. The book you choose each week is unrestricted. You can use a single book as many times as desired or change books on a weekly basis if you wish.
2. Use 1 mage the whole time but have the ability to change the layout of the book you use each week.
3. Use 1 book the whole time with no changing week to week.

Once we get this nailed down and a participant list finalized, I'll start a challonge site for everyone to keep track of the standings.

I would definitely prefer a whatever goes with regards to mage choice. I know I tweak books almost every time I log on to OCTGN based on previous games and I'd rather not get stuck with a book I know has a specific weak point that can be fixed. I'm just more of a fan of the casual game style which would allow each person to pick whatever mage/book they want given how they are feeling a certain day. Maybe once we get to a top 4/8/12 and the playoffs, then we start limiting to either a different mage each match or the same exact mage, but for the "regular season", I'd be a vote for anything goes.

Seconded. Exactly what Vendetta said.

I'm sure I would want to change at least a little something once in a while. So 3 in its current form - not a big fan.

Still it would be unfair if someone for example choose Warlock as their permanent mage and then everybody took multiple Dragonscale Hauberk, Elemental Cloak, Wall of Earth etc. - some of the other mages have pretty hard counters as well.

So no changing or allow changing mages also.

Title: Re: The League of Extraordinary Mage Warriors

Well, it appears that option 1 is the winner. I think I'll extend signups until Friday night at 1159 Central US time (UTC - 5) at which point I'll get the Regular Season schedule going.

My current list of signups are:
1. Sharkbait
2. Coshade
3. Biblofilter
4. BigL16 (Maybe?)
5. DevilsVendetta
6. Sailor Vulcan
7. Kaarin
8. Drefan
9. Frozen
10. drmambo
11. reyda/ad_yer
12. Schwenkgott
13. Zot

I'm willing to accept more than 10 signups, but the above are who has shown interest so far.

Also, regarding scheduling: I'm thinking of just releasing 3 names at a time and giving everyone 3 weeks to get those matches in. This way, if someone has a rough week, they have a bit more scheduling flexibility. Does that sound good to everyone?

How is not allowing players to change their Mage any different from if they were allowed? What matters isn't WHO plays a Mage, but rather which Mages are being played. If players A-D each pick a different Mage, and then player B switches mages  with player D, that would not alter the metagame.

Once I have the time to figure out how OCTGN works, I would consider being included for future games. I'm probably not as computer savvy as most of you on here, so I got about as far as downloading and being able to watch a match, but that's it.

Ditto.  I'm reasonably computer-savvy, but messing around on OCTGN for 30 minutes led me to recognize that if I were my own opponent, I'd be annoyed with how long it takes me to execute simple tasks - not to mention accidentally revealing cards that I'm trying to plan or enchantments I'm trying to cast face-down.  Besides, my limited gaming time is already tapped out with the little bit of live play I'm committed to; not sure if/when I'd have enough time to commit to organized play online.  Maybe one day.

The good news is that if you do decide to play, the OCTGN community is ridiculously forgiving and generous for people not familiar with the interface. I haven't run into one person that wasn't willing to help their opponent learn how to go about navigating the interface. Once you practice a bit, I have noticed it becomes second nature.

However, I do understand the limited time sentiment, so this isn't meant as pressure to commit to the league. Just making the knowledge available. Spots are open should you decide you would like to participate. If this is successful enough, I hope to expand the league a bit for season 2

I would like to join too. If it is every 2-3 weeks that would work really well as I am also quite busy. I would need to reinstall octgn stuff on this pc and get familiar with the interface/play. It has been 1.5 years or more since I played on there last I think.

I like the idea of allowing people to pick different mages and update books between matches and allowing all cards would be very interesting. So, that includes promo cards that have not been formally released in a set? Things that have been printed and handed out, but not released would be available for the game?

I know May is usually a busy month for almost everyone stateside. Graduations, holidays, etc. I know I am booked all weekends in May already. Could it start beginning of June?

Reminder to everyone, I'll accept signups until 2359 Central US time tonight. After that I'll get the league set up and the schedule set with the rules posted so everyone can get started playing.

As for allowable cards, I was going to go with the typical Thunderdome rules (promos allowed but any official releases supercede old rules. Ballista will also be war mage only)

Oh Great! If I can forfeit a game when I can't schedule a game that would work for me.  Count me in if there's still spots available!

iNano if you need some help with OCTGN I can give you some pointers at the next meetup or we can even setup some practice matches beforehand.  Let me know if you're interested.

Good point. It'll be head to head record first, followed by strength of wins (more wins against higher ranked people)

Btw, has anyone ever actually had a game of Mage Wars Arena result in a draw without going to time?

Like say, player 1 has 33/34 damage and a magebane on themself, casts a fireball on his opponent to finish them off?

Or two players simultaneously dying from burn/rot/etc in upkeep or something?

I have been playing Arena for several years and I've never seen it happen.

Just won my first league match using the new and improved version of the Frugal Warlock (core set x1 only), against BigL16's Anvil Throne Warlord. It was an awesome match.

I cheetah speeded myself then ran to NC, cast nullify on self. He conjured a battle forge, moved and cast a moonglow amulet. I summoned my dark pact slayer bloodreaper and put magebane on him. He equipped himself from his forge and moved to NC then cast another forge. I teleported him away from his forges and tanglevined him, then started attacking along with my dark pact slayer bloodreaper.

I started to get worried when he conjured a harshforge monolith, making me pay upkeep for my magebane, nullify, and cheetah speed, but I persevered. He basic melee attacked the tanglevine, boosted by his gauntlets of strength to do 7 damage to it. I put bear strength on my slayer and continued to attack him, albeit with less mana than i would like. I was on a time limit. He had destroyed my tanglevine. Once I had enough damage on him I put poisoned blood on him. Worried he might try to teleport away and put a wall between us, I made the mistake of trying to put a force hold on him instead of a tanglevine. I had forgotten that i had to pay 2 extra to cast the force hold on him because of his harshforge plate. I only had 1 mana left. He dispelled the poisoned blood and used minor heal on himself, going from 26 to 21 damage then back up to 23 from magebane.

BigL16 had 4 armor, a veteran's belt and 2 defenses on him, but it was not enough to stop my final assault. I used my basic melee attack on him for 1 damage, and then my bloodreaper attacked. 8 dice, piercing 2 is no joke. Against a 4 armor target, he would probably do about or close to 6 damage on aveage, which would have been only 4 away from victory. Then I would have finished him off during the next round's first quickcast phase once I had initiative.

It wasn't necessary. Dark Pact Slayer got past the BigL16's last defense, and dealt a whopping 7 normal and 5 critical damage. 2 of those crits were converted to normal by the veteran's belt, making 9 normal and 3 critical. Dark Pact Slayer has piercing +2, so adding 3+(9-2) to 24 damage

=VICTORY!!!!

In retrospect, I was pretty lucky to get past both his defenses from dancing scimitar and reflex boots (although the fact that he didn't put his rune of shielding on either the scimitar or the boots might have helped make my victory more likely.) I should have cast tanglevine on him instead of force hold. Fortunately, by the time I made that one mistake, I already had a huge damage lead, and the Dawnbreaker was smiling on me.

In the end I managed to survive without taking any damage, but it was a close call. BigL16 seemed to be on the verge of turning things around the entire game, and I had to stay on my toes. I suspect that my fast and aggressive tactics took him by surprise, and that he was totally caught off guard when I teleported him away from his two battle forges.

Looking forward to my next match!

I know it happened in my group once.
I've had that. We both burned to death in upkeep phase both playing a war lock. It was hilarious! I think it was one of the most fun games I ever played.

Wait I just realized that BigL16 and I forgot that the league doesn't officially start until the 22nd. Is it okay that we had our first league game early? Since Its not always that easy to predict when I'll have time to play and when I won't...

It's fine. I said the 22nd to give people some time initially to set up

GG Sailor.  Rolls were pretty crazy but I think your initial teleport move slowed me down too much in any case :/  Well played.

btw, i just remembered that bloodthirsty is like taunt when there are damaged living creatures in the same zone as the bloodthirsty creature. i don't know if i made the mistake of illegally ignoring a damaged creature in my zone or not in my first league game. I don't think so, but I'm not entirely sure and I just want to double check. BigL16, do you remember if I did something like that or not?

Because if I did make that mistake then I think a rematch is in order.

Lol Sailor...  I wouldn't worry too much about it.  I only ever had one creature out, my mage.  And the match wasn't even close ;)

Right I forgot. I think for a moment I got our league match confused with a casual one I had against Drefan's, Juli's or Schwenkgott's Anvil Throne Warlord.

Side note to everyone: I added RomeoXero to the list of participants because he was a last minute addition. I'll reflect his first 3 matches on the front, but don't be surprised if you end up playing 4 in the first 3 weeks. Technically, you can play anyone in your match schedule whenever you have the time, you don't have to wait for me to tell you who to play. Just let me know if you swap order/play more so I can accurately keep track

Alright Mage Warriors,
Today is the "official" start to the league! Get your 3 matches in by June 11! If you haven't contacted your opponents, please at least touch base. If you want to be proactive and get more than 3 matches in, feel free, but I will still post a recommended schedule. Battle reports are welcome in this thread, and if you want the match streamed/recorded then let me know and I'll try to be around (or Coshade will, etc). Once you've played your match, please also send me a PM just to make sure I don't accidentally miss the results. Good luck everyone!

Battlereport from my fun, short and exiting match vs Sailor Vulcan (Henry Ketchup on OCTGN)

He played an Arraxian Crown Warlock vs my Straywood Beastmaster.

I won initiative and elected to let Sailor Vulcan start.

Round 1.
Warlock [mwcard=MW1E05]Cheetah Speed[/mwcard], double move and a FD enchantment on him.
BM FD enchantment move 1 and [mwcard=MW1J04]Battle Forge[/mwcard]

Round 2.
BM [mwcard=MW1Q16]Leather Gloves[/mwcard] (actually pants) Darkfenne Asp and a pet [mwcard=MW1C37]Thunderift Falcon[/mwcard]

Warlock [mwcard=MW1C03]Dark Pact Slayer[/mwcard] Bloodreaper and an FD enchantment on the demon.

Round 3-5
Warlock and the Bloodreaper closed in and beat Beastmaster face!
At the end of round 5 the Beastmasters pants exploded (im not joking) I´ve heard of the Warlocks love of fire "We both burned to death... most fun i ever had" Thats not how i felt when my pants exploded.
BM managed to kill the Bloodreaper by the end of round 4.

Round 6+
Warlock continued to apply pressure - removing all armor and casting several [mwcard=MW1E31]Poisoned Blood[/mwcard] and a [mwcard=MW1E19]Ghoul Rot[/mwcard] to prevent the BM healing from [mwcard=MW1J15]Mohktari, Great Tree of Life[/mwcard] but not being able to stop healing and burn removal during the round from [mwcard=FWJ08]Renewing Spring[/mwcard] which allowed the BM to recover, and start getting real damage on the Warlock with a 6 dice pet Falcon.

The Darkfenne Asp deserves a lot of credit for this BM victory - the first 3 attacks vs the Warlock all got the 7+ Weak effect. When the Warlock was reduced to 9 mana or less (with curse revealing) Casting a Flame Blast and then having a decent melee attack each round might easily have changed the outcome of the match.

Match 1: Sharkbait V Frozen

Sharkbait's Anvil Throne Warlord took on Frozen's Malakai Priest
The match started with a battle forge + mana flower for the warlord and a battle forge + Hand of Bim Shalla for the Priest. The warlord spent a few rounds casting equipment, mostly armor, and the priest continued to enchant himself. The warlord also brought out a ballista and then clashed with the priest in the middle of the arena. One theme of this fight was how ridiculously well the warlord rolled on damage. The priest eventually purged the 3 enchantments on the warlord (Bear strength, Akiro's Favor, Critical strike), but he still had plenty of equipment and continued to put damage on the priest. After recasting the bear strength and continuing to hit the priest, the warlord had the priest pretty close to dead. The great rolls continued as the priest had a heal almost completely undone by a hurl rock that was followed up by a boulder. The warlord had the next initiative and finished the job with another great roll on a boulder in the first quickcast phase. I'm working on editing the video for this match so I can post it on here too, but that's going to be done probably tomorrow. Overall, it was a cool book that Frozen brought, but Akiro did him absolutely no favors.

Finally got the video to upload!

I do have to report my last 3 matches i had this weekend. Playing vs henry, gaspode and devilsvendetta. It was fun and challenging :) And ill admit it here again: Im sorry for the 2 games heavily influenced by rolls with me having clear above average results. Its always sad to see games decided by the dice.

Juli vs gaspode: Waterwizard mirrormatch, i got out on top in this one.

Juli vs henry: Me waterwizard again versus henry choosing necromancer, after some initial damage on my mage i managed to take down his zombies, skeletons, curses and finally the mage.

Juli vs devilsvendetta: Waterwizard vs soloforcemaster which went for a lot of channel early. After i managed to roll 9 crits with only 6 dice vs his battleforge, he unfortunately was almost forced to go into the damage race, but it wasnt enough. Third W for me.

PS: i know these three opponents arent the ones ive been asked to duel in the first round, until now with 2 of the first 3 weeks already being over there were some difficulties in finding time in schedules for the games..
The question i wanna aks here is how strict the rule about battleling the "chosen" ones in the appropriate time actually is?

The question i would like to have being answered is the following: Is it ok if we participants manage to fulfil the "3 games in 3 weeks" rule, even if they were played vs opponents we havent been assigned to play yet?

Regards, juli :)

Just finished my league game vs frozen. I was using necromancer with libro and he was using straywood bm with fellela. Those falcon pets are much harder to destroy than I expected! First several rounds he managed to bring my damage up to like 15 just with the heavily enchanted falcon pet alone. Gator toughness+joined strength on pet is a fearsome combination. Eventually I used maim wings on it and tanglevined the stupid bird that just wouldn't die. It finally died from my zombie brute's attack, after that. (what do you expect, was playing necromancer lol!) Then he transfused his enchantments onto a grizzly that he had just summoned. He got in a few big hits with the grizzly, but I put on some armor and regrowth belt and ran away, deploying more skeletal minions while I did so. I don't know why he never used cheetah speed on his grizzly. He did use mongoose agility, though. At one point he made the mistake of moving his grizzly farther away from my mage, taking th pressure off me, so he could attack my skeletal archer. He had 10 dice and he only did five damage to the archer. I removed 2 of that damage using acolyte of the bog queen's ability. Enfeeble really worked wonders on his mage, and eventually he just couldn't keep up. In the final round, he had ghoul rot on him and poisoned blood countering his regrowth, and he was at 35 damage out of 36 life. I acid balled him, lower his armor to 0, but failing to do that final point of damage...yet. He cast a hurl rock on me, doing five damage to me. I then finished him off with my zombie brute.

In summary, there was a lot of cat and mouse tactics. frozen had to chase me all over the arena, and he just couldn't pin me down. He almost did though. It was a close game, but I won. I think the final score was 26/32 to 41/36 or something like that. Good game, frozen!

This is just a reminder to everyone to get their first 3 games in as soon as possible! If you don't finish your matches this grouping, we can be flexible still so don't worry. However, the hard cap will be at the end. There will be no extensions beyond the originally scheduled amount of time. I'll post the next 3 suggested opponents on Saturday the 11th. Until then, keep posting the fun battle reports!

I also played a match vs ad_yer last weekend.

My wizard did beat his straywood in a pretty quick game. He played with fellella and a heavily enchanted pet falcon. I think i managed to get the bird down a little bit quicker than he expected me to. After that it went downhill for the forces of nature.

In light of the recent Wizard errata, the League will now be treating wizard as the errata'd version instead of the previous version going forward. Plan your books accordingly!

I'll have an updated schedule posted later today, been a busy weekend. That being said, keep playing your matches, we're roughly half way through the league. If you have played games and haven't reported the results, please do so!

Ill be available for some games saturday and sunday.

Running behind so would be nice to get a few games in before my USA trips start!

Just one other thing: I would like to have a time limit on the OCTGN games, but haven't been able to come up with something decent.

Limiting the number of rounds we play might be a simple way to do it?

Im up for testing something like that - only thing to determine is the number of rounds 12? 15?

We could still have long game tourneys like 12 rounds, 24 rounds, 36 rounds.

At the current state i don´t want to start a tourney game without having at least 6 hours to play and sometimes thats not enough either.

oh yes  we will reach 42 by the end of the week. Then i plan to add around 10/week - wouldnt mind some more help :)!

Id like to have 14 swarm books , one for each mage.

We hope to get a few beginners at the con and i think spawnpoint + creatures are the easiest for a beginner.

Adramalech Warlock - Imperium! and Straywood Beastmaster - Swarmmaster are the only ones really ready for this at the moment.
