Title: What other games do you like?
Post by: Lord0fWinter on April 21, 2014, 12:15:28 AM
For many of us here, myself included, Mage Wars is our favorite game. However, I know there are many other games that people on the forum play.

So my question is, as the title suggests, what other games are you playing currently? Recently I've been playing alot of King of Tokyo. It's a short, fun game that's easy to get into and learn. It's great for almost any age and is a fantastic family game.

What is everybody else playing? (When not playing Mage Wars :P)

7 Wonders is probably my next favorite game. It's quick, plays well with both small and large groups, requires a lot of attention, and involves a lot of difficult tactical decisions. The best card for yourself may be obvious, but you also have to consider what you're passing to your opponent and how that affects them. I have all of the expansions, my favorite of which is the Leaders expansion which gives you some direction as you play, thus making the game a little more strategic. It's still very much a tactical game rather than a strategic one though.

I also enjoy worker placement games and have been playing a lot of Lords of Waterdeep with the Scoundrels of Skullport expansion. The theme isn't too strong, but it's still a lot of fun. I've been trying to break out Agricola for a deeper Worker Placement experience, but not everyone in my group share's my appreciation of it. Some of them have made comments akin to "games shouldn't make you think." Blasphemy, I say.

One Night Ultimate Werewolf is also fun. It's basically just lying to people's faces, hehe.

Oh man where to begin. I'm a locally ranked Hero Clix champion, having played it for 12 years now. I own a very nice collection I've spent a fortune on lol. Clix is just reflexive for me now as I'm capable of analyzing and breaking down enemy teams subconsciously. I hope to one day get to that level with Mage Wars. I play about 6 games of clix a week.

I'm an award winning game master for table top RPGs. In particular I'm a big fan of Scion: Hero, Changeling: The Lost, Deadlands, and Shadowrun. My favorite though is Werewolf: The Apocalypse and I even have a trival tattoo from he game on my left arm.

My favorite board game is Settlers of Cataan, I own a custom made board for it. I love Wiz War, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Bang, Tsuro, Munchkin(all versions), Axis and Allies(played 1914 yesterday), Small World, and Ticket to Ride. I'll play almost any board games those are just some of my favorites after Settlers.

I'm the worse Magic the Gathering player I know, just can not get into it and when I try I just embarrass myself.  :P I use to play Vampire: The Eternal Struggle though and Spycraft for my card game needs.

I got into gaming through Live Action Role Play, particularly the Minds Eye Theatre version of the World of Darkness games(hence the tattoo.) I've LARPed on and off since 1995 and ran my own Werewolf: The Apocalypse and eventually Vampire: The Masquerade games for about 4 years from 2002-2006.

I've played this as well. Good game.

I play a lot of different games besides Mage Wars. BattleCON is my next favorite game. Some of my other favorites are Puzzle Strike, Mage Knight, 7 Wonders, Race for the Galaxy, and Pixel Tactics. I played a few games of City of Iron recently, and I really enjoy that, particularly 4 player.

I like Lords of Waterdeep with the expansion. I thought it was a little bit too bland with just the base game, but I like the addition of corruption. I've been playing Russian Railroads more than LoW recently. My problem with Agricola is not that games shouldn't make you think (with the amount of analysis I've put into Mage Wars, that is clearly not my position), but that I don't have fun playing it. I guess I just don't know how to accomplish things in Agricola in the face of competition, whereas the logic of the worker placement in LoW and RR is more intuitive to me. I kind of wonder if I would like it more now that I've played a good number of worker placement games, and I have a broader experience base to draw on in analyzing the game. I hated Caylus the first time I played it. I tried it again more recently, and, while I didn't like it, I didn't hate it anymore either. Still, I'm not curious enough to try it again.  :P

The key feature of Agricola is the cards you're dealt. These create an asymmetrical situation among the players where you'll each be able to approach the game in a different way. These special powers that nobody else has is what makes the game great to me. LoW has intrigue cards, which are great, but the cards in Agricola actually change the rules of the game and what you're able to do from then on.

I really want to try Caverna out though. It still has the special powers, although they're now tiles up for grab instead of cards being dealt out, and it is a lot more forgiving which allows for more experimentation and diversity of strategies.

wow. Although I would love to play mage wars we also play;

Battlestations for a great mix of roleplaying and boardgaming
Hackmaster for the pure roleplaying experience
pandemic, stone age, 7 wonders and Legacy for the boardgaming
Cabo and the fireworks game for cards
Not to forget Dixit for the fun

I play too many games. Both my likes and hates are too long to list here

I've been meaning to play both Lords of Waterdeep and 7 Wonders. I've heard great things about both.

My 2nd favorite game is probably the Game of Thrones board game, 2nd edition. The only problem is I can never find enough people to have a 5 player game, which is where it really shines. I also enjoy the GoT LCG, although I only have the base set. I'll enjoy pretty much anything to do with GoT.

I also play some classics, like Dominion, Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, Ticket to Ride etc.

& I also have Mage Knight, Sentinels of the Multiverse, and Cards Against Humanity.

I'm planning on picking up Resistance:Avalon when it comes back into print, whenever that is. I'm also considering getting the Marvels Dice Masters game that comes out soon. It looks pretty sweet.

I'm mostly with Shad0w on this one. I love too many games. However, if you limit it to games I would actively love to play right now...

Nightfall - Easily my favorite deckbuilding game made. Unfortunately, it's strength is also a weakness. You really want a constant group for it so that people can get use to the drafting portion.

Sentinels of the Multiverse - It's tough for my wife and I to find games we can play together. I love cooperative, strategy board games. She likes more casual, friendly games (except Gloom, not friendly, but certainly casual). However, we both play Sentinels. I'm also not normally on board for cooperative games, but I love this one. Add on top of that their latest expansion, "Vengeance" is incredible and it's easy to see why this is one of my go to games.

King of Tokyo - I grew up playing Kismet (the knock-off Yahtzee) and so when I sat down to King of Tokyo and realized it was Kismet with giant monsters, I fell in love. It's easy to teach and quick to play.

Netrunner - The first time I was introduced to this game I was completely blown away by how amazing it was. I asked my friend who taught me where I could find it. His response, "Australia, cause they're the only place with boxes remaining. WOTC cut this game." I almost cried. So when FFG announced they were bringing the game back I jumped on it. Haven't regretted it.

X-Wing Miniatures - Anyone who's met me knows I'm a huge sucker for Minis games. I love this one because it's just simple enough to allow quick play and cinematic feel, while being deep enough to get the themes of Star Wars out and have tactical depth.

Malifaux - Last game I'm going to have on here is a traditional skirmish minis game. The world they've made for Malifaux is deep and involving, and it's characters are rich and varied. The randomization is all done with a traditional deck for 54 playing cards. I love this game, and I'm super excited to break out Kirai again!

I got to play several new games today:

Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men - real fun and quick, if you like Quarriors! Dice Masters uses that system but is really focused on the attack side of things. It is collectable though and Starter Kit is quite hard to get your hands on at this point. (Lost this game badly)

Blood Bowl: Team Manager - The Card Game: - once again a real fun game once you get it down, it will take less than an hour to play. Lots of variety and paths to win this game as you build your team. It is quite fun for a deck building style game. (Won 35-33)

Robinson Crusoe: Adventure on the Cursed Island - this thing is a heavy Euro and is supposedly the hotness. We ran out of time as it was our first game but we got far enough into it to get a good feel for it. It is unusual for my small group as it is a co-operative with cross board planning. If and when  you plan to play for the first time, give yourself plenty of time to read through the rules, there is a massive amount of Icons and Symbology to wrap you head around. I am a huge fan of Agricola and Caverna and I think this game has a chance to rank that high.

I've been wondering whether I would like Robinson Crusoe.
Title: Re: What other games do you like?
Post by: Zuberi on April 24, 2014, 02:28:10 AM
I've also seen a lot of raving about Robinson Crusoe but haven't dived into researching it for myself. My group isn't heavy into cooperatives, so I don't often look at them even though I like them well enough. The only one I have that sees play is Sentinels of the Multiverse (super hero theme for the win) and a friend occasionally brings Pandemic. Now that this has gotten the sIKE stamp of approval though, I may have to look into it. I trust the opinion of a fellow Priest.

Marvel Dice Masters has been on my radar for several months though. I can't wait to have it in my hands. I hate the collectible nature of it, but it looks like so much fun to play.

Game of Thrones living card game.    Thinking man's game with excellent multiplayer dynamics, and strong Game of Thrones theme.   Also inexpensive to get into.  The 4-player base set can be had for under $30.  Give it a try if you like Game of Thrones, you won't be disappointed.

I also play Dungeon Command and miniature games from D&D (Castle Ravenloft etc.). I would like to play Paizo's Pathfinder, but I don't have a group of interested players for now. I used to play M:tG, but lately it required bigger and bigger investment of time and money, so I quit some time ago. Now I am a very happy Mage Wars player and it consumes almost all my free time, so I can't play anything else really :)

I have a long list of games I play but a short list of friend who will play with me.

Everything that everyone has posted all seem like fantastic games I would love to play in the future. The current games I find myself gravitating to is Risk and the Game of Thrones LCG and the board game. Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan are also up in the top of my gaming list.

Pretty much any games involving in-depth strategy is what I love. I also love Monopoly but no one will play with me because I take no prisoners  ;D

We have game nights about every other week.  My wife likes Alahambra, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Dominion, Tales of the Arabian Nights.  I like Mage Wars, Marvel Legendary Heroes, Duel of Ages II, Cosmic Encounter, Red Dragon Inn.

Of course, my favorite game was Pathfinder, but it's impossible to get the same group of people together even once every two weeks as adults, so Pathfinder went by the wayside.  Still have all my books, minis and maps, though.

Only been to one con, Origins, but that was before the baby was born.  She's two this year.  We're thinking of getting back to Origins next year possibly.

Just picked up Cosmic Encounter 2 days ago and I've already played it like 5 times. I love it. Pretty random and chaotic, but in a fun, entertaining kind of way. Using alien powers is awesome.

& I love games where I'm supposed to lie and backstab people. It's always fun, as long as they remember it's just a game and don't get upset about it.

Let's see.  My favorite game of all time is Summoner Wars, for a variety of reasons.  I also love BattleCON, Ascension, City of Remnants, and Heroscape.  I have a love for tactical games, though I enjoy any game with a player to player element.  I'm not the biggest fan of Euro games, because A, I'm a tactical games fan, and B, one of my friends is incredibly good at them and has never lost.

My favorites are Mage Wars, Terra Mystica, Russian Rairoads, Carcasonne, Taluva, Quantum, Airlines Europe, Dice Town, Krosmaster Arena, and I am better to stop now else I might add 20 more games to my favorite list.

Wow, Agricola only got a 6! That is the only other game that has rated a 10 in my book, have a couple of hundred 2 players down on that one. Really do like Castles of Burgundy and Tzolk'in the blue skulls just rock! I agree that NHex is very well done on Android though some of the expansions are hard to win with or against. GOA/Purteo Rico type games I really like, the worker placement/resource management really tickles the strategy/tactics itch I like in my games.

No wonder I like Mage Wars you get all of the goodness of the euro style management games and you also get to yell "There can only be one!" at the end of the game as you watch you opponents head roll. Well that is how I see in my mind video....

New Mage Wars player but it is quickly becoming a favorite.

I was a tournament Magic player before I switched over to Heroclix about a year and a 1/2 ago.

Been getting into more board games recently with Legendary, Pathfinder Adventure and Zombicide probably being my current favorites.  Also picked up the Marvel Dice Masters recently which is fun (in a light reading kind of way).

I'm very interested in X-Wing minis but my discretionary funds are pretty low right now...

My buddy got his hands on the new hotness - Splendor. We have gotten a couple of games in and it is a lot of fun to play, maybe 30 - 40 minutes each time including setup and break down. I won one game and lost the second. It's loads of fun and is available again at Coolstuff....

Got to play a micro-game off a Kickstarter called Coinage and it is fun too for what it is. It is quick and fast to play also.

So, uh, there's this new game called Sheriff of Nottingham...

Don't know if you guys have heard of it or not ;)

I haven't had the opportunity to play it yet but it looks really awesome. Probably going to preorder it sometime in the next few days. I generally like to try games out before I buy them but this looks like one that is right up my alley. Any game where I can screw over my friends and have a good laugh about it is a good game in my book :P

So, I'm part of a gaming group that meets every Tuesday at a local bar. We draw a crowd every week of 50-60 players. we did hit 82 players a few weeks ago. the guy who runs it has a collection of about 70 games he keeps locked up at the restaurant for us to play, along with a majority of us bringing our own games to play as well. The owner of the restaurant absolutely loves us because if we weren't there his restaurant would be dead on Wednesdays. the food is great, with $4.00 massive sized burgers, as well as a huge craft beer menu.

For international TableTop day we had over 250 people come through. We had tons of prizes to raffle off, and there were also Door prizes. One of the FLGS was there with a booth set up selling games at 30% off MSRP. We had Reps from AEG there demoing games and they even ran a Love Letter Tournament. They also played a few games with us that were still in development.

My Girlfriend and I got heavily into the Lord of the rings LCG - we were both turned off by the difficulty but then we played easy mode. Nowadays we can play the normal game and achieve victories as well and since she is in England right now I started playing it solo and I am having a blast with it!

If anyone wants a difficult cooperative/solo LCG set in the Tolkien universe i can only recommend it. But notice that the core game is only the tip of the iceberg of this game - you may follow the bookstories by buying the Sagas expansions or even go further and buy adventure packs or deluxe expansions.

Also, recently bought Mega Civilization, but haven't got this one to the table yet.

I've been playing and locally hosting tournaments for X-wing Miniatures since early 2013. In fact, that's what got me into becoming a Mage Wars ambassador. My spouse mentioned in conversation that X-wing was my favourite game. I objected. At the time, it was by far my most frequently played game, but it wasn't my favourite. I played X-wing because it's a solid game with a terrific competitive community.

When pressed, I listed some of the games is rank above X-wing: The Resistance, Coup, Galaxy Trucker, Space Hulk, Chaos in the Old World, Ascending Empires (and Crockinole, for that matter), Star Trek Fleet Captains, Cosmic Encounter... Then I said, "Even if we're talking about head-to-head competitive 2-player games that could be played in a tournament, I'd say Mage Wars is a better game than X-wing."

A couple weeks later, somebody posted on BoardGameGeek that they'd like to find Mage Wars players in my area. This got me to thinking, if I'm willing to put in so much time and effort into X-wing, why not try to grow a Mage Wars group?!  It's been about a year and we're still going pretty strong - although could stand to add a few more regular players.

Update: Other great games I've been enjoying lately: Codenames, Pandemic Legacy (although we're starting to lose interest, but I won't tell you why), Dungeon Fighter (silly fun), Coconuts (basically beer pong for children - but fun for adults too), and we get a lot of requests to bring Telestrations to parties, although it's more of an activity than a game.

You start the game by creating your warrior (https://boardgamegeek.com/image/1373828?size=large) in an RPG-like way (You've got points to distribute among attributes, buy weapons (https://boardgamegeek.com/image/1364281?size=large), armor (https://boardgamegeek.com/image/1364283?size=large) and maybe battle dogs), then You design the arena (https://boardgamegeek.com/image/1364284?size=large) by buying elements like whirling spikes, hole, snakes or the beast and You're ready to fight.
During the fight You can make melee or ranged attacks, feint, dodge, parry enemy attacks, charge and move around, order your dogs, disarm opponent and pick his weapon,
You can defeat your enemy by delivering killing blow (single attack dealing deadly-level wound), poisoning (putting more poison tokens than enemy's constitution value), pushing into the hole (You can pretend You kick the enemy and shout "this is Sparta!":P), bleeding him out (dealing more critical wounds than enemy's constitution value) or making him pass out from pain (wounding place with critical wound already there and enemy has to fail his psychic attribute test).

We had a blast with Pandemic Legacy (just first month), Tiny Epic Galaxies and next week, i will have a game or two of Socerer (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/181819/sorcerer-strategy-card-game) Fun fact, creator of this game met Bryan at Essen and Bryan like art of this game so much that artists from Sorceror will be doing some art for Mage Wars :)

From PC games, X-COM 2 and The Division :)

Besides Mage Wars, I like Pokemon (video games), Super Smash Bros, League of Legends,  and Improbable Island (though I haven't played that much in a long time) and a bunch of others. Mage Wars is still my main hobby game though. I also like dungeon crawl stone soup, but I would play it a lot more if it was a mobile or handheld game. I'm interested in getting into the Lord of the Rings card game.

I'm also on an endless search for MMORPGs and Pen and Paper RPGs that I will actually like and can play with other people. I'm interested in trying single player pen and paper rpgs (the kind that don't use a dungeon master, I think they're called RPG-books or something.) Unfortunately these are really rare and I've never seen them in my FLGS.

Recently playing Mare Nostrum Empires by Academy Games. A lot of fun packed into this version. It holds up to 6 players with the Atlas Expansion. A 2 hour game of empire building with 4 paths to victory that keeps everyone watching their opponents play.

My other favorite games right now are probably Duelyst, Lord of the Rings LCG, 7 Wonders Duel, and BattleCON:Devastation. With the exceptions of Duelyst and 7 Wonders, the general trend seems to be that all my favorite games take a long time to setup and play :(

I haven't played Mage Wars in months... I'm about to start college, however, and I expect that will either further limit or expand my opportunities to play games. Not sure which yet. :/

If we're talking non-board game type video games too, then I'm also an avid Overwatch player.

How long are your BattleCON games taking? I've been playing with a friend of mine and we can get through games pretty quickly. Granted it is a game where you want to play several matches one after another.

Overwatch is fantastic.
