Title: 4 player expansion
Post by: Cowbell on September 20, 2012, 02:32:51 PM
Is the four player expansion going to be that ( a four player expansion) or is it going to be like a second version of the starter set. I.e if I want to play this game with multiple people, should i get one core set and wait for the four player expansion, or should I wait and just buy the four player thing?

i believe the 4 player expansion will be extra sets of markers and tokens (like the action markers) as well as maybe extra cards, maybe 2 more spellbooks.  dont know for sure.  i do not think it will have an extra board but i could be wrong.

to answer your question it will not be the same as a starter, (different colored action markers) so if your really into the four player, then wait for that expansion would be my guess.

That would be good, it'l essentially be the starter pack minus the cards and rules. What I'd like to see is multicoloured expansions so that if necessary new players could pretty much create their own starter box, so they would get two 'player expansion' sets (that's if each set only contains a single colour etcetera), separate rules and that's about it.........oh oh oh will the player expansions include similar coloured dice?.... that'l cool XD

It has yet to be determined.  It would most likely include more spellbooks, spells (possibly some new ones), status boards, markers, and counters.  Also, we are wanting to make a much larger arena board to accommodate 4 players.

I would love to see the 4 player expansion come with at least one new mage, especially if it comes out before the Necromancer/ForceMaster expansion.

I bought 2 cores with the intention of painting two sets of markers different colors. However, I would probably totally buy the 4 player "expansion" if it came with new cards and/or a new mage!

Any date when this will be released yet?

In the near future we will provide you with alternative colored action markers. This is the primary impediment to a four player game.  The action markers will be yellow and green. Once we know they're on their way to the distributors we'll announce it (forums, facebook, BGG, etc.)

As far as an actual full four player expansion, our current product plan is to produce several of the two mage expansions to the game before we produce an alternate 'big' expansion.

The Forcemaster Vs Warlord Expansion that should be out this quarter and we would are gearing up to start in on the next couple of mages pretty quickly as soon as it hits shipping.

I am adding your comments here to my notes for a multiplayer player expansion.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions.

Feel free to post more ideas. I will be watching this thread.

I am most excited for a 4 player expansion.  Surprised the company has not decided to roll it up into one package: 2 new characters with new action color markers, bigger board, and an expanded rule book with added pages on how the 4 player works.  Heck, it could just be another starter box with different spells and different colors.  The bigger board is important, though.

This quarter? But the sell sheet says late January! I don't know if I can wait any longer!

Bu seriously, how much longer should I expect to wait, because I am itching for some Jedi action.

Now for a more on-topic reply:
Will the 4-player expansion be coming with more Mage status boards and cubes?  From what I've seen, it looks like it's just the action markers(one again, going by the sell sheets.  Don't know if those are outdated...).  I also think more damage and mana counters would would be really nice in a 4-player expansion.  I personally play with just one core set (GASP!), so we tend to run low on mana counters near the end of the game.  I guess the same could go for all the punch-out tokens that come in the core set, especially if the idea is "buy this expansion and you and three people can play with just this and the core set".

LumberJack: Sigh... you and me both. I need to cause Mind School pain sooooo much!

We got the proofs for the set and weren't happy with the quality so we sent them back which has added some time.

We are really close to being able to give a firm date....which also means we are really close to release incidentally. I want to give you a firm release date, but the moment I do the fates will cause the proofs to explode or something else equally horrific and set us back a crazy amount.

As soon as I have a firm release date, you will have a firm date.

what about the (planned) contents of the 4 player expansion? As LumberjackJim said, it looks like it was the action markers only, which would be very unsatisfying for me..

The Sell Sheet is still accurate in terms on product contents.

The Forcemaster Vs. Warlord expansion will contain:
216 Spell Cards
2 Custom Spellbooks
2 Mage Cards
2 Mage Ability Cards
Die-cut markers (These are the health and mana marker variety.)
Rules

Action Markers (packaged separately) are heading out to distributors today.

Hope this gives you some clarity.

So I guess I will have to simply make copies of the stat boards for the mages and print them out if I want multiplayer?

I wasn't so keen on buying a second core so soon given that I had gotten the spell tomes and wanted to spend time with what I had before dropping another big chunk of change; not to mention the upcoming mage expansion.

I'm really glad we'll see token and marker packs. I've had some great discussion on BGG about "optimal" size of arena and if a second board is really the way to go (which I've basically decided against), so overall I've been hoping for everything to be piece meal any way.

I agree with Locusshifter...
If these 2 Mage expansions came with status boards, I think I'd be one happy dude.

The new cards, mostly Mage specific obviously, the new books (to house our current iterations) and the rules and chits necessary (if any) are all awesome.
A Status Board or two would make them perfect, imo.

I hope most of the forthcoming expansions follow this staple...great job!

Thank you for the complement.

I am hearing all of you.

I need to get the next Organized Play kit produced, and then I will see about providing you with something that will aid in the Status Board dilemma. Hopefully I can have something to tell you about in a week or two.

Heck, I'd be willing to buy Status Boards, if they are exact replicas of those included in the Core.

Obviously, most of us would only need 2 additional...but whatevs!  :)

While we are on "what's needed for 3 and 4 players to play", I will happly see alternative board:
- two boards are ok solution for 4 players - but it makes me have to buy another Core Set and it will look only ok (wall in the middle of battlefield)
- for 3 players there should be some costum shape (maybe like this):

  xox
xxxxx
oxxxo
xxxxx

So maybe two 3x1 board pieces with drawn something (stairs, ramp, cliff) that will make wall around the oryginal arena like something else?

As mentioned above modular tiles would be awesome. the only issue with that idea is that they would move without shelf liner underneath or a plastic sheet over them.

this setup really bothers me. you should strive for consistency in your products. if you plan to include 2 spell books and markers in every expansion i am quickly going to have to start throwing things away from my new purchases. i realize your still small and new so your trying to meet multiple needs but with a game like this your products really need to be focused. Players are less likely to make purchases when a products price gets ramped up by items they don't need.

Out of curiosity, residualshade, what do you object to in the expansion contents?  With two new mages I would expect two corresponding spellbooks for them.  And with new traits, conditions, and who knows what else is coming new markers would be necessary, yes?  Of course, I am the type of player that wants a mage specific spellbook for each mage I play, and I'll be snatching up the Priestess and Beastmaster books just as soon as they get to market!

Hint.  Hint.

Books like those RETAIL for $5. I guarantee it's not going to be all that much cheaper without them. I also believe most players would rather have them rather than exclude them.

OK. So right now, the solution is to buy 2 master sets, then the Green/Yellow action marker set?

Welcome to the forums evilhead!
You can paint the extra markers from the second core set with some spray paint.

Team games are played on the standard board with teammates starting in the same corner.

Free for alls set up the boards to achieve a 4 x 6 play area.

I have played a few team games on the standard board and it is not large enough IMO.  Def need 1.5 or 2 boards.

I have been testing a 4x5, 4x6, 5x5. My fave for 4 players is 4x5

Our group really loves to play 4 player games. So in order to make that happen,  I bought the Core Set, the Action Marker Set and the Forcemaster vs. Warlord expansion. Awesome! Now we have everything that we need except for two things:

* we only have 2 Mage Status Boards
* we only have 8 Mage Status Cubes

So far, in order to have 4 players, we have been sharing Status Boards between 2 players and using beads for status cubes. Not really the most ideal.

How do you guys get additional Status Boards and cubes? Do you really have to buy a whole other core set just for those 2 sheets and 8 wooden cubes?

Thanks! I love this game!

if you need status boards in several webs i see jobs of some people that you can print and enjoy.

I am guessing that, in the near term, there won't be any way to get new status boards other than buying a whole new core set (a little expensive for two cardboard cards). Does anyone know of any high-quality scans or images of the status boards that I can get on the web? At least I will be able to print them out and glue them to some cardboard.

Honestly, 4 player play pretty much requires two of the box game to be feasible.
Not even just for the status boards..
You need more dice, more counters, another set of quickcast markers, damage/mana tokens, more copies of key spells, and more copies of the mage cards incase more than one person wants to use the same type of mage.  (and more copies of things to support that, such as voltaric shield tokens, pet token, etc)

Ive done a lot of 4 player games, and trying to squeeze 1 core game to acommodate that many people is a really tough.  Especially if the players want to branch out and customize their books.

So when is this expansion going to come out for four players? I read that we were going to hear something back in a couple of weeks but that post was all the way back in January. I'm really happy that a expansion is suppose to come out every 2-3 months with two new mages and new cards but the accumulation of mages and cards kind of becomes useless after awhile if there can not be more then two players.

A idea could be to come out with a big expansion and have pretty much everything that came in the core game expect the mages and cards this allowing players to play a four player game. The only problem with this is that there will be two game boards side by side. Perhaps a idea would be to just have the tiles cut so then the game board could be made each game for the number of players or in different ways. This way you would have the most customizable game. You get to customize the spells and also the arena.  Then with each expansion you can add different elements to the arena without having to remake a game board you could just add a tile.
