Title: Gen Con Dinner.
Post by: silverclawgrizzly on May 08, 2015, 10:41:35 AM
So with the big cons fast approaching I am beyond excited to attend my first Gen Con this year. I've been to Dragon Con and a host of local conventions but Gen Con is certainly one of the big ones left on my list. One of my best friends will be driving up from Charlotte early Thursday morning and leaving Sunday. One of the things I'm most interested in is meeting other Mage Warriors from around the country and world. Thus the Charlotte Mage Warriors would like to invite any who are interested to have dinner with us Thursday night. Not picky where, just somewhere not fast food.

If you're going to be at Gen Con and interested let me know.

I'm interested, just have to see what the wife and baby want to do.

And also if it coincides with the other events had planned.

I will be there as well and I'm interested in some carpooling possibilities from the Chicago area.

Ok we got us a fair bit of interest it seems. This is good cause I'm certainly not going to Gen Con to NOT do cool stuff lol. Now I don't now Indianapolis or what's around the convention center. Does anyone who's been know what they got that's reasonable affordable? I'm willing to do a steak house or any other type of sit down restaurant. Not fast food obviously.

i go to indy about 2-3 times a year, but i'm always working when i'm there so i usually only am able to get fast food. There is a Mall attached to the convention centerwhich has a nice food court. all of the attached hotels all have resturants.

Within walking distance is a Hard Rock Cafe, Hooters, Tilted Kilt, RAM restuarant (pretty expensive), St. Elmo's steak house (very expensive), Steak and Shake, California Pizza Kitchen, and there are many other's i'm sure i missed.

When i'm there for work I ususally only eat subway, because it's easy to get to and affordable.

The Ram isn't too terribly expensive, around the same price for any other bar and grill type restaurant. Steak n Shake and the fast food restaurants are going to be so packed and noisy that it pretty much defeats the purpose of going out with a group. One time I went with my group to Ram and isn't wasn't terribly over-loaded.

So I vote for Ram

I'm wondering if I could put in a reservation for any of these places? Hotel restaurants are going to be expensive cause....well they just are.

I'll look into the Ram and Tilted Kilt. Maybe see what else there is.

Ok Mage Warriors I did some research on this issue and I'm voting for The Tilted Kilt. It's a block from the convention center, it's reasonably priced with some nice specials and seems pretty legit. It sort of looks like a Scottish themed Hooters but hey part of a vacation is new stuff right? Plus if it's too pricey some people can just split a pizza. If it's cool with everyone I'll reserve us a table for say 12? That'll let people bring spouses and friends.

Now in terms of what time to do this, my friend Andrew the Necromancer and I are driving in from Charlotte NC. We're leaving like 6am-7am in the morning and driving straight through. We'll arrive within 9-10 hours. Looking at the Tilted Kilt website I'm seeing some specials that start at 9pm. So the plan is going to be:

Lets all get together at 9pm at the Tilted Kilt on Thursday of the convention. That way people have a chance to get settled into their hotels, maybe walk around the convention center once or twice, and we can have time to catch a shower before meeting up to talk Mage Wars.

If no serious objections to said plan are voiced in the next couple of days or so I'm going to call them and reserve the space.

I'd also like the real actual name of someone else who's reliable to put on the reservation on the off chance that we get delayed or something stupid happens. You can private message me if you like.

I pass by the Tilted Kilt on the way to work. It is on the north side of Georgia St. east of the convention center (between the convention center and Banker's Life Fieldhouse)... NE corner of Georgia and Meridian Sts.

I won't be there, though... I have an event that I'm signing up for that runs 3-7 p.m. Thursday, and then another from 8-11....

Sad day Dave, well when you get out you could always stop by and see if we're still around. Just come by to say hi. It'll be pretty cool to meet you guys.

Probably the main thing I'm looking forward to at Gen Con is meeting people who share my love of this game.

Ok here's where we are Mage Warriors, I called The Tilted Kilt today and spoke with General Manager Michael. At first he was less than thrilled at the idea of a reservation during Gen Con but after some fairly liberal negotiations we have space for 12 people reserved at 9pm on Thursday July 30th. So this is a go!

Yup this is still happening. I figure it'd be an excellent chance to meet up and maybe work out times for some casual games.

I am in as well. Since I am a Charlotte Mage Warrior, do I need to help host?  ;)

I truly wish I could make this dinner. I have an event that evening. However, as soon as I'm done I'll be dropping Silverclaw a line, and I'll see what everyone is up to. I'll probably be looking for a drink... I need to find the places downtown indy that serve Moscow Mules... or Crabbies...

.  Have not been on the forums for a very long while. So, missed this dinner. I certainly would have come had I known.  It was great meeting so many from this forum at gencon. Great to put faces with names and a pleasure to meet those of you fortunate enough to get to go to the con. A great group of folks sharing their lpassion for this game. Wish I could have gotten more games in with some of you. Hopefully will see you at the con next year.

This event went very well overall. We may want to find a less noisy venue next year, and Gray Cat has kindly offered to assist in that regard.

I regret having not gotten a chance to play much either. I was running around like a mad man all con. Well they say your first year at Gen Con is your learning year and I'll certainly know better next year :)
