A question from the German Mage Wars Forum:

Does the mage need LoS to target the animal creature?

Yes, line of sight is needed. See page 19 of the rulebook.

'In order to cast a spell or ranged attack against a target, you must have a clear line of sight.'

Staff of beasts says: once a round as a quick spell
