Welcome Mage Wars fans for another hot and heavy battle here in beautiful Charlotte NC! We got 8 ready to rumble Mage Warriors here today and some fabulous prizes! I am your host Silverclaw Grizzly(actual name on birth certificate) and the Magerunner is here with me to help facilitate. Our Round 1 matches are:
John(Force Master)
VS
Rob(Straywood Beast Master)
Millie(Necromancer)
VS
Kiana(Priestess)
Joe(Priestess)
VS
Josh(Warlock)
Brian(Priestess)
VS
Al(Warlock)
As you can see it's a good day for the righteous as 3 Priestess are in play and they've immediately risen tot he challenge of taking on the forces of darkness!!!!
We also have demo games going on.
-
Really does look like light vs darkness. Too bad the holy orders are lacking their order of Malakai. Hope they can make due without him. Where do I place my bets on the winner?
-
Twas a basically good round for the righteous!
Johns tried and tested Force Master defeated the Straywood Beast Master of Rob!
Millies Necromancer was able to bring down Kianas Priestess!
Joes Priestess barely defeated Joshs Warlock!
Brians Priestess slimly bested Als Warlock!
The Araxian Crown is reeling but Darkfenne is surging! The Asyran Church is also apparently fighting itself!
Round 2 Pairings:
John(Force master)
VS
Millie(Necromancer)
Joe(Priestess)
VS
Brian(Priestess)
Josh(Warlock)
VS
Rob(Straywood Beast Master)
Kiana(Priestess)
VS
Al(Warlock)
-
Did John switch mages OR did you make a typo?
-
I made a typo. Corrected, thanks for catching.
-
A very brutal Round 2 resulted in:
John(Force master) sliced and diced Millie(Necromancer)!
Kianna(Priestess) smote (AlWarlock)!
Joe(Priestess) won the holy war against Brian(Priestess)!
Josh(Warlock) burned Rob(Straywood Beast Master)!
Now for Round 3:
John(Force Master)
VS
Joe(Priestess)
Millie(Necromancer)
VS
Brian(Priestess)
Josh(Warlock)
VS
Kiana(Priestess)
Al(Warlock)
VS
Rob(Straywood Beast Master)
Who will win!!!!
-
Can the might of Asyra halt Forcemaster aggression?
-
Actually they tied lol.
-
Final Results!
John takes 1st!!!
Joe takes 2nd!!!!
Josh takes 3rd!!!!
Millie takes 4th!!!!
John and Josh tied!!!! However John beat his opponents by KO where as Joe beat his previous matches by time. Thus John wins by total points!
-
Thanks for the report!
-
Our scoring system was:
Win by KO opponent mage= 3 points.
Win by time= 2 points.
Tie= 1 point.
Loss= Pity.
Thus on the last turn of the Joe VS John match John managed to take out Joes Priestess with a Double Strike that rolled above average. However Joes remaining minions destroyed Johns Priestess immediately afterwards.
Epic. Friggin. Match.
Epic. Friggin. Tournament.
-
How did his minions kill his opponent if he was already dead?
-
To our understanding if when a Mage is out of it the round continues until all creatures have acted.
-
Nope. When a mage dies, he loses at the end of that action. This makes ties very rare, though still possible. Usually by damage barrier.
-
In the Official Mage Wars Rule and Codex Supplement on Page 11:
Mage Death
Once a Mage dies, he cannot perform any further actions, pay mana costs, cast spells, make a counterstrike, etc.
Any enchantments and equipment attached to himself are immediately destroyed. Other objects he controls in
the game remain in play.
If a Mage dies, continue play until the end of that Phase (e.g. the Upkeep Phase, or the current creature's Action
Phase.) If all remaining Mages die before the end of that Phase, the game is a draw.
Example: In a two-player game, a Wizard with 1 remaining health and enchanted with Magebane casts an
attack spell on the enemy Warlock to kill him. The Warlock is killed and the Wizard will die from the Magebane,
and the game will be a draw.
-
This is explained in the FAQ. The key to remember is the difference between phase and round or stage. The mage losses at the end of the phase that they died. During the action phase this means as soon as the creature finishes acting. Magebane is another way you could have a tie.
-
Ok then hows this for an answer: Cause that's how we rule it :D
-
Lol, it wouldn't have made a difference to the standings any way I don't think. I just got excited when you said tie because it is so rare. Letting the mage continue after death would make it less so though, hehe.
-
I'm tired, exhausted after running a 4 1/2 event. I can see the point you're making, but we're still gonna rule it like this I'd wager in future events. Makes the game more interesting.
-
That's fine. I wasn't really trying to make a point, just clarify a rule. There's nothing wrong with playing a house rule or variant. The important thing is that everyone has fun. And it sounds like you ran another amazing event! I'm sure everyone had a blast.
-
Found new players we hadn't met yet. Taught some Mage Wars. All in all this goes into the win column.
-
Sounds like another very successful event. I must admit I'm a bit jealous at the great group of people you have to play with :P
Is there any way we can get the winning spellbook (if they're willing to share it), and a general strategy they implemented? I'd like to keep a record of event-winning spellbooks and strategies for people to use as resources to get better.
-
My Lord of Winter I shall most certainly post the winning spell books....once I've rested some :P I love running events but they're almost as draining for me as the folks who played 3 back to back matches. You should see those books tonight.
-
Thank you very much sir. No rush, get some rest! I'm not in any hurry to get them, I can wait a few days or until whenever is good with you :)
-
I will say this the Force Master player John, he finished his first two opponents off in less than 30 minutes each! I mean he just opened up a MASSIVE can of aggro right off the bat. Against Joes Priestess he destroyed the Temple of Asyra almost immediately and made her play super defensive while getting out creatures the old fashioned way.

To say it's bold is an understatement in my eyes. No he doesn't pack armor because as he says "the other mage will and I have Steal Equipement." I've personally fought this book twice now and lost with my Necromancer but neutralized it with my Air Wizard. Millie's Necromancer also fought it to a stand still last Friday.
-
Oh I forgot, this book also has two Walls of Force in it though I never saw them actually get cast. In terms of strategy I will also note that he protected that first Thoughtspore(which had a Force Hammer) remarkably well(for a Thoughtspore.) Usually with a Reverse Attack and then later a Block. Also one of the main strategies behind this book seemed to be making you waste your Dispels on stuff like Charm and one of the Force Crushes early on before Mind Controlling your creatures and hitting you with the second Force Crush. He'd Seeking Dispel + Dissolve regularly too so keeping it on a Mage Wand wasn't happening.
-
I forgot to reply until now, but thank you so much for posting this! I am curious how this spellbook had little issue with the Necromancer in the 2nd round. One would think that with practically all the Necro's creatures being psychic immune, the Forcemaster would have trouble defeating it, but you said that it beat the Necro in about 30 minutes, lol.
-
He focused on pure offense and just beat on the Necromancer. Dissolving the Libro Mortus really throws off a Necromancers tempo. Basically he made her play defensively the entire game. He was able to destroy her skeletons with the Thoughtspore using Force Hammer and save his mage for attacking the Necromancer directly.
Also tournaments are nerve inducing events sometimes. The Force Master player is just a more experienced gamer over all. That's not to say the Necromancer is a bad player, by no means is she. But she's new to board games in general. She actually beat the Force Master with the exact same books being played both each of them two days earlier.
-
Makes total sense. Thanks again for the report and analysis!
