Title: Selesius the east wind - sweeping
Post by: jacksmack on January 22, 2014, 05:08:17 PM
What rules apply for her ranged sweeping full round attack.

She is flying, but its a ranged attack.
Must she attack 2 or 0 flying? (like adramelach sweep)
Must they the targets be in same zone? (range 0-1)

Creatures cannot lose or gain flying in the middle of an attack.

edit:
Anyway its a ranged attack so that is not relevant.

If she uses her ranged attack she can target different zones and if she attacks ground creatures she does not lose flying because it is a ranged attack

if she pushes a creature away she can't attack it a second time

Copied from Complete codex 1.0:
Sweeping (Attack Trait) This attack has a wide sweeping arc. A Sweeping attack is one attack action, which comprises 2 attacks against different targets in the same zone. After the first attack, start a new attack sequence (beginning with the Declare Attack Step) targeting a different object in the same zone. Note: The second attack cannot be made against the same target as the first attack. If there is not a different valid target for the second attack, then the Sweeping trait has no effect this round. When a Flying creature uses a Sweeping attack, if the first target has Flying, the second target must also have Flying. Similarly, if the first target does not have Flying, the second target must also not have Flying. If a creature uses a Sweeping attack that also has Reach, then the above restriction does not apply; the second target can be Flying or non-Flying, independent of the first target.

I guess she has the same limits as adramelach even when her attack is ranged.
But it just feels like its written for a melee sweeping attack.

In the FAQ it explains that the reason both targets have to be flying or non flying is because the attacker can not gain or lose the flying trait in the middle of their attack. Since a ranged attack does not make you lose the flying trait when you attack a non flying creature, it seems that logically you would be able to attack both a flyer and a non flyer with her sweeping attack.

The RAW only allow you to attack both a flyer and non flyer with sweeping if you have reach. However, since they explained the logic and reasoning behind this design, I believe that the RAI is for ranged attacks to be able to as well. They were just overlooked.

I emailed Laddinfance about this a while ago, he's a busy guy :)

Would it even remove the restriction of same zone?

I'm going to double check this, but first I think she can target flying and non-flying in the same sweeping attack. Second, they would still have to be in the same zone as each other. I'm going to double check this, but I'm pretty sure in my design conversations with Bryan from December that this is what we wanted. I'll keep you all updated.

Sweeping ranged attacks may target either flying or non-flying creatures in any combination. The Compiled Codex and the Rules and Codex Supplement should have the correct ruling in them now.

The two targets must be legal and in the same zone as each other.
