Looking awesome!

Some of the new cards look awesome. Heart of Gravikor is going to completely replace the Warhammer once it's released in Warlord books. I really like the holy damage barrier as well. The Sweeping Acid attack looks awesome (level 1 for Druid!), and the Chitin Armor will be great once it comes out (level 1 Nature as well...hello alternate Druid Armor).
I'm not really impressed by the Flame and Lightning strikes though. I think it most cases it would be better to just cast Flame Blast or Arc Lightning instead of using one of these. I think the Pharoah's Cheetah might be too awkward to use most of the time, since it'll need Mongoose Agility and at least two enemy creatures 2 zones away to get its full attack.
The Gale Force Ring could be cool, but I think we'd need a lot more Wind attacks before it'll make any impact on the meta. Dragon's Breath looks cool as well, but due to the cost and positioning requirements I can't see any mages other than Warlock or Fire Wizard take it, and even then only one of them.

$62 to the kickstarter will get you all the cards.
You can get 8 of these cards with a $50 pledge to the kickstarter, they are included in Promo Pack A. The other 8 you can get with a simple $12 donation which is not through kickstarter. See tomvasel's link above for more info.

Really digging the Wall of Poison Gas and Gloves of Skill. Those are nice. Bloddthirsty Strike is also cool.
-
Love Dragon's Breathe. Can deal with the full action with a 0-3 range and the ability to hit 2 targets in seperate zones.
Wall of poisen gas looks pretty wicked, especially, for the Necromancer.
Lightning beetle looks awesome! Has 4 armor, -2 Lightning, Melee and Ranged Lightning attack, plus it's psychic immune? The Lightning and flame strike cards could be a way of getting around elemental resistances. An Arc Lightning can give you lightning damage, but just imagine Steelclaw with Lightning Strike versus Brogan (Ok piercing strike could probably be better unless you score a stun). Maybe change a sweeping attack to the lightning effect to daze and stun multiple targets.

It says next melee attack on the card, so it would only apply to the first attack in a Sweeping or Multistrike attack sequence.

To clarify, $62 to the Kickstarter will NOT get you all of them. You can get one with the Kickstarter in a promo pack, or you can get the other one NOW for $12 a pop. One is ON Kickstarter, the other is off. Sorry about the confusion.

Whoops, had a brainfart. I forget that sweeping is essentially a multistrike just spread out among targets.

You are right, my mistake...I will modify my post.

Mage Wars is the best game I have played in the last 10 years. Having 16 promos that cost 62.00, and having promos only available to those who can travel across the country to go to conventions, may make me stop playing it altogether.

The first 8 cards cost $50 because they are included in a "promo pack" that contains promos for many games. This is a Dice Tower kickstarter that is not affliated with AW, remember, and their audience plays all sorts of things. I won't be putting in for the first set because I don't play any of the other games in that promo pack, but $12 for the other 8 cards is a good deal.

You aiming high to be dream consumer nr 1?
Paying for promos??? since when was that not riddicilous? Do you even know what "promos" are suppost to be?
If other cards costed 1.5 dollars a piece then i wouldnt be playing this game.
I dont even want to go into aspect of spending time on getting these cards - bothering with what promos are released when and where and how.
I got into this game because it was not collectable... if it were i would have avoided it per defination. Promos bring forth this feeling. Especially when promos contains cooler cards than the expansions (true up until DvsN).
Edit:
And the alot of the promos in this thread look super freaking awesome too.
-
Nobody is forcing anybody to buy any promos. If you don't want to pay such a high price, then simply don't. I won't be, because like lettucemode, I don't play any of those games besides Mage Wars.
Unless I am mistaken, all promos will be released in future sets. So everybody will be able to get these cards in the future in normal sets. People just buy the promos in order to have them early.
Secondly, most play groups have house rules that do not allow the use of promos because they give advantages to people who buy them and nobody else. Tournaments also have a no promo rule.
In conclusion, if you feel like promos are overpriced and not worth it, simply do not buy them and wait for them to be released in the sets. This game is not a CCG and never will be. AW knows that part of the appeal of this game is the fact that it is NOT collectible and I highly highly doubt they will ever change that.

I understand what you're saying. I'm not really quitting playing, it's just irritating that it seems like on promos the designers go nuts and come up with something REALLY cool, even cooler than the already pretty cool regular MW cards. Seeing those cards triggers my collector lust, I MUST HAVE THEM!
OK, I'm all better now.
-
I feel your pain. I really want them too, but I'll be patient and wait for them to come out later so I don't have to pay such high prices.
Although, the $12 for the 8 cards isn't THAT bad. They aren't as cool (imo) as the other 8 from Kickstarter though.

In the context of the Dicetower, if you look at just the card price for Promo's yes they are expensive. However the intent behind these two sets is to help The Dicetower fund its operations, so paying $1.50 per card is to help Tom make his videos not put money in AW's pocket. This is good for Mage Wars as his bull horn is quite loud and reaches many gaming geeks. The two sets are separate one is a Kickstarter tier and the other is purely for The Dicetower funding purposes.
Promo's are not tourney legal and most games IRL and on OCTGN either permit them or block them. I have played both ways. The net is that they are not needed to play the game and give a peek into the future to what the design team is thinking.
So if you do buy them (out of lust or not) it is for a good cause, not some greedy ebayier....

Another look into the minds of the design team 8)

I'm really disappointed that the Lightning Beetle and Death's Head Scorpion aren't considered Animals (same problem with Wolf-Spider). They're in the kingdom Animalia in real life... Why does the game not consider insects to be animals? It really hurts the J. Beastmaster, because it limits her creature choices if she wants to use Wounded Prey.
On a slightly related note, I am also mildly disappointed that Heart of Gravikor is War Mage Only. I know it's meant to beef up the Warlord, but it would be AMAZING on the J. Beastmaster; one-handed ranged weapon with a quick melee attack on it, perfectly meshing with all of her card abilities. I hope we get more one-handed ranged weapons in the future, hopefully ones that aren't mage-specific (3-die base is fine with me if I get to hold two things).

The cool thing about promos I just found out is when you're playing a friendly game and your opponent pulls one out I tend to go "Oh neat something I didn't expect that's really cool!" Yeah we'll get them in future sets but until then they mix up the local gaming group in my area. I like being kept on my toes as it keeps me interested.

As long as you can proxy the card yourself, they are lots of fun. If it is a case of you have and they don't or vise versa they are not...

For me personally I don't really care if I can proxy it. There are no high stake Mage Wars tournaments like with Magic or Hero Clix. There's nothing on the line in a match. I just got into this game last month with a group of friends and lose more than I win but I'm still having a blast. It isn't worth getting upset over.

Those promo cards look awesome! I'm interested in the Pharoah's cheetah card. Are we going to have an ancient egyptian themed nation of etheria?
Also, just because they aren't that high stakes doesn't mean that we should give some people an unfair advantage in official events. And there are still awesome prizes, even if those prizes aren't tons of money. I personally think it's better that way, since IMO having really high monetary stakes increases the chances of cheating and bad sportsmanship. And I just thought of an AMAZING prize system so i'll go post it now.
-
I agree in that not having high monetary value prizes is cool, one of the things I enjoy about the game.

Heart of Gravikor = Mjolnir XD
Maybe soon we have the shield of Captain America XD
-
But he will be called Captain Etheria. :)

Actually, there is. We have whole world to explore and to unveil to our players, and one of the area's I'm most excited about is Dsjer-Tet. Now, there is no time frame on when they'll be released, but this is one of the exciting areas of our world that's going to be featured in the future!

Egyptian theme, new Wind attacks, the Sandstorm promo...I think this hints at a Earth/Wind mage. Probably the Illusionist? Goes well with the concept of mirages in the desert.

There is more than one desert nation in Etheria. ;D

Odd to see AW still pump out cards with frost resistance and defrost powers, when we are yet to see anything with frost...
-
The two promos I was most excited about to date (including the above) were the Healing Wand (which turned out to be not as awesome as I had thought, but still neat) and Sersiryx, Imp Familiar (which is just awesome).
I really hope that Sersiryx will arrive with Forged in Fire! :D

It probably means they're preparing for the release of some pretty powerful ice attacks or creatures that can use ice attacks at some point in the future. I mean, if they only released cards to deal with frost attacks in the expansion where frost attacks are released, then anyone who wanted a way to deal with frost attacks would have to buy that specific expansion. While you could just use defenses, more armor, guards with intercept etc., I suspect that that won't always be enough. There's probably some sort of special mechanic that will involve frost attacks. I'm guessing it will be something that influences movement or actions. So frost -x would be useful for lowering the effect die roll so that a creature is less likely to be slowed, restrained, or incapacitated. It's just speculation though.
It would be cool if there was a mage that wins by "Freezing" the arena. Like racking up Frost counters on creatures and conjurations, where 1 counter gives them lumbering, 2 gives them slow, 3 incapacitates them or prevents them from activating abilities. That would be really cool, and it would explain all the Frost -x traits, since that would be a pretty powerful effect if it weren't for traits like frost -x to lower the effect die rolls.
-
Also, I doubt there will be a non-mind illusionist. How would an illusionist cast a real sandstorm? That doesn't make sense.
As for an Air/Earth Mage, I think of the weather. That geomancer idea that was going around a while back? Yeah.
