I really enjoy the way this book plays. The trick is to get at least one Dawnbreaker temple out, better if you use two but only if time allows. Every creature in the book except Brogan has a natural defense so any way to ensure normal attacks miss gains you tempo. drop one or two creatures early depending on what your opponent is doing. look for guardian angels if im using an early temple of light. if i feel pressure early i can holy avenger a Defender and prolly cast a second before the trouble hits. and of course if i really want to make them pay for hitting me or my temples, Knight of Westlock is a super expensive but awesomely powerful Holy avenger.
A ferw well placed pilars of light (boosted by dawnbreaker ring and hawkeye ) can daze easily and stun for a wonderful surprise burst of tempo. and dazes work very much like defenses (good ones! 7 up!) and that's a great way to "stack defenses" when the target already has a natural defense.

This is the book that brought on the recent post about how much everyone hates the priest. Feel free to tell me what you think! im still working on it, this is version 3

1) because he has 9 channel with optional -1mana to place a burn rather than 10 channel with optional -2 mana to place a burn. Discussed elsewhere.

I Actually hadn't seen that till now, but you're absolutely right! And if I'm playing economically (think budgeting for something bigger... you know, cuz mana sucks for him) for 2 mana you could play that ignite (not that i would but in a perfect world here, follow me on this one) then cast a Sunfire Burst for 5 and get another potential burn, then pay 1 more mana and get a guaranteed burn, and a probable daze in there somewhere.

The pessimist says: 2 actions, 8 mana, coulda cast a fireball, not enough attack dice (which is truish, but if you arent playing DB ring and Hawkeye you are probably being foolish.) etc.
The optimist says: played a tight round, got 3 possible burns and a daze. part of that is repeatable for cheap and with a little tech (that pretty much everyone else uses anyway, i mean when doesnt a warlock use his fire ring? and everyone uses Hawkeye)those 2 dice attacks are 4 dice attacks, with dazes and stun chances all over.

Major tempo swing stuff frequently and in small, affordable packages. ive seen a single daze roll swing a game in a huge way, and the priest hands them out like Halloween candy! he can slap you one and you are (possibly) dazed by his holy rage, not to mention set on fire.

Quote
Holy Avenger. Poor outlook: people think, "I either don't get that +5 life or I don't get that extra damage. Even worse, its the opponent who decides what benefit I get." I wouldn't bulls endurance my knight, so why would I holy Avenger it?" With a more positive outlook it becomes, "I can wreck their stuff unless they deal with the Holy Avenger first. And if they kill it I can just keep making more."

Truth!! But some real success ive had is with Temple of Light and Temple of Dawnbreaker (and Hob when theres time) to make small but incredibly annoying attacks repeatably. There gonna want to hit the ToL eventually because of all the stuns and dazes its capable of. Stay around it with your small 5  mana 4 damage range 2s that daze (and burn) and your HA in zone or near and he can hit back harder. Its a tough nut to crack.

As to the Priestess removing conditions better... well yeah! he is an alternate mage, he doesnt have to have the same abilities. No other mage has a much better way of removing conditions either, but they dont cry about it, they carry a healing wand and work around it. It just seems to bug people that the Priest has to do things, things that everyone has to do, and i never understood why it bothered them so much. Ive got a much better understanding of the General opinion, dont agree with it, but hey thats why this game is awesome! We can all be right!

lol, i dont know maybe i like kicking at this horse because thematically i love this mage. he works he really does. Ive seen it! Ive Done it! It takes work, but its freaking awesome when it works out! I mean people figured out bunches of ways to use the Forcemaster and shes hard as hell to use to good affect. I know this one got crazy rambly, sorry bout that, but i guess i feel strongly about this for some reason. lol!

Thank you everyone so far! Don't take my further coments as angry arguments either, cuz this is great! I'd like to point out though that many mages have to run Forges and mana crystals, so why does it suck so much when the priest does it? The way I see it if you come up with a priest, what will your opponent expect of you? Temples and spawn points? Early rush with a buddy? Solo mage? (unlikely). The way I hear it folks expect priests to lay down and die because the mage card isn't as powerful directly compared to the (arguably OP... Constantly arguably in fact) wizards?
I've seen folks get thrown off by even seeing a priest as an opponent. One style I used had lots of defences, another style had a forge and a ToA. The one I'm using right now has NO spawn points at all. I look at HA as a huge life buff ( biggest in the game in fact) with some gravy, and even a BM needs to buff his creatures, why doesn't he garner ire from it.
I'm gonna take this to OCTGN and widen my meta! I need to see if it's just my local meta that's not used to it.

Rules Discussion / Re: noob question - counterstrike
« on: November 02, 2015, 04:30:04 PM »
I'm afraid HoB won't help with the counter attacks. You need to activate t before or after a friendly action. During a counterstrike it's not your mages turn and activating a ready marker cant be done in the middle of an action. Yes you can use it after the action that puts you in the dangerous position, but in that case id likely use it to add the +1 armor instead of the melee +1

I agree that 10 channel would be better. I don't know what mage wouldn't like 10 though. Lol. I wonder why they made him a 9 channelled, I know there's only 3 alt mages right now but it was a bit of a deviation from the norm. Granted two of them came out in the same expansion. Maybe the joktari BM should have had 10, at least it woulda been the same switch.

But still, I think Coshade proved that getting hit isn't the end of the world, I know that sounds kind of counter intuitive ( he's kind a counter intuitive mage) but I think there's really something to the play style in Divine Life. Take your hits, hit back more, and harder, set him on fire, add the potential to make the other guy miss with his next attack, when you take damage heal it because you can afford it, then do it all again. Keep dispels for poisoned blood, destroy death lock Asap! Boulders or maybe even a meteorite for those, depending on how froggy you wanna get. It's a tough tempo juggle, but I like the challenge and I've had good success with it. Anyway, sorry, more rambles. Thanks for responding! You guys rock!

Mages / Everybody hates on the priest. Why!?
« on: November 01, 2015, 03:02:54 PM »
Now I for one think the priest is awesome. Let me just make that perfectly clear. I will almost always bring my priest out before my priestess, and though the priestess is awesome too, she's awesome for different reasons.

My main query to the Forum world (hi forum world!) is this, will anyone please spell out to me why the priest is widely considered the weakest mage?

Sure some of his mage stats aren't the strongest, but they all function very well. I don't know about you but with no other buffs but holy avenger (which should be considered a defensive, longevity enhancer) a Knight of Westlock has 3 armor, 15 life, a pretty decent defence, and if you or a holy thing you control gets hit he can hit back for 7 dice piercing +1. That's not small. Bear strength ( that's only one spell for buffs) and it swings 7 natural and 9 of you get hit. That screams buddy build if I've ever heard it! Yeah HA is a bit expensive but that's the holy schools fault not the mage. It's only got one lvl 1 creature, and one lvl 2.
Also Malakis fire is crazy useful. Doesn't seem like it would be, but adding an almost guaranteed burn for one mana, if I recall correctly that's the cheapest way to get a burn on. And since it requires very little extra prep as far as SP goes ( he always swings light damage) it can be a major thorn when the other mage isn't expecting it. Plus late game (or early if you rush) he's quite capable of punching stuff and that daze chance is crazy useful! Add the dawnbreaker ring and he hits as hard as any other mage, add the staff and it's even better.

So why is he so detested by the competitive community? He has ready access to repeatable daze and stun, equally easy access to burn tokens almost every turn, in school access to the 2ndbest offence creatures (knights) and by far the best defensive creature (Guardian Angel), and heals just as well as a priestess. Yeah 9 channeling sucks but the warlocks make it work! So does the druid. Hell the beastmaster (straywood) is a 9 channel mage and he's pretty awesome.

Give him a try again, I think you'll find his brand of holy retribution is more fun than you thought it was. And if not, tell me why. Thank you all for listening to me ramble!

Also vines themselves, though they can gain life from the lifetree, are fragile and destroyed if they take any damage at all. Not sure if that was your intent.

I don't really see it the same way brother, and maybe it's just a difference of opinion. I see books get put up here a lot, and after the first day or two not many get responses past the first few. The ones that do get tons of responses are either tourney winners (weighted training clothes, straywood aviary, e etc) or books that change the meta in some drastic way (like the Watergate wizard, some of laddinfances intersting takes on making the warlord viable, etc) or books from legendary players (read anything by Charmyna) or books that we see in video ( the arcane duels guys for instance). Those books are usually discussed a lot and rehashed or edited in community  form.
Personally I can't stand forcemasters, either playing as or against them. I can say that your book has me wondering how my druid would stop it, I've got many wonderful ideas from it, not to mention the fact that you let someone know that force pull is not nulify relevant!
I think the vast majority of the idea flow here is offline, I mean check out the views, folks have seen and read the book.I think you are having a bigger impact than you think you are, we all are. Even with no responses the fact that there are books here is super helpful to new players!
You should be happy, whenever I see a book blow up with responses it's because the other players think it needs a ton of work before it's ready. Everyone just said your book way great, I think it's great, I think some of my books can beat it, but that's the beauty of it all isn't it?

Another issue is that we are in the middle of a meta change. Two huge sets of resources just dropped (or are about to) into out laps and I don't know about you, but I'm trying to find room for hurl meteorite and dragons breath in several of my books right now, along with preparing for domination as best I can. I would say don't be discouraged. I love reading everything posted here and you personally make many viable points. Either way I'm going to keep them coming, my tournament druid is gonna get posted soon, and I'd love to hear what you've got to say about it. I don't know bro. Maybe I'm just too laid back

I just managed to get ahold of my copy of Domination BG, And its awesome! Dont get me wrong that part was amazing, i just wonder why i didnt get my Ahnk of Asyra or Blur. I believe it may be because I got my copy from my favorite game shop (I like to support the local business) but it has been pre ordered for months. i just sort of assumed that id be receiving a pre order first printing edition that was supposed to include those two promos. Did this happen to anyone else? Am i silly for thinking id get those cards if i got it from a shop? i mean the guy special orders all my mage wars stuff for me (except the core set, that was already there), so i can get it from his shop. Basically i wonder if i was even SUPPOSED to get them in this manner. can anyone shed light on this for me?

« on: October 24, 2015, 06:16:48 PM »
Yeah to be perfectly honest it was a happy unexpected occurance when i got them. i bought a ton of stuff so i dont know if they were added because of the ending price tag, or if i have them just cuz someone was being nice (if so thank you whomever you are!) but i see that promo pack 2 is still on the store. leather belt and sunfire burst are the only cards id really play out of it but its still worth it. IMHO

I mean... I got some alternate art mages when  I bought the promo kits in the AW web store. Are you talking about the ones that are essentially the same exact mage pictures but with magical cloudy/wispy/sparky/flaminess in the fore and backgrounds? If so thats how i gottem. dont have the necro though.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: FM solo build needs advice
« on: October 19, 2015, 04:20:40 PM »
Well Im the Druid hes talking about.  ;) In the tourney were in we've got an Adramalech warlock, a druid, 2 FMs, a air wizard and a warlord. its a tough choice because were playing matches to determine Placement in the brackets. theres gonna be a buy round so the one withthe most wins in the prelims gets the buy. I want that buy!!! lol.
Its been pretty tricky so far, because one doesnt need to play his tournament book in the prelims, but i went ahead and played the druid against each opponent once. It may have been a poor choice because now many of them are worried about it and im probably going to get teched against a ton in the tournament itself.

Personally i think he should run a buddy build, hes having a tough time nailing down his exact playstyle. i find thought spores to be almost completely useless. as they are squishy enough to destroy with one well placed attack spell. this particular tournament is a tricky meta and were in for a challenge as theres no real way to be ready for everything. its going to come down to how the books get piloted. im really excited about it.

Spellbook Design and Construction / Re: Adremelech Burn Build
« on: October 13, 2015, 10:51:44 PM »
Hi there! I really like this build! Ive got a few questions though, and maybe their answers will help you. First off its awesome that youre using this mage, she is a tricky one though. burns as resourses is intersting but hard to get to work.
1. I wonder why you are using the Gate to Hell. You only have 3 creatures that benefit from its buff (2 technically as i dont see you throwing punches with your familiar) and its a WHOPPING 6 SP. thats 6 curses. thats 2 more fireballs (that i think you also need), thats 4 more flame blasts and a dissolve. its sooo many other more useful things you can fill that book slot with. i tried really hard recently to make an AC Warlock who used the gate, and it got edited every time. its once a game attack is sub par at best, and expensive. It also requires a full action.

2. Im wondering if you need demonhide armor, you could same a point by just doubling up on the dragonscale. you're already running circle of fire. its nice, i just don't think its worth 2 sp.

3. I see a small issue that is wildly improbable (maybe not wildly) , but if it happens you're gonna kick yourself. You have no source of healing. So if someone pushes you through your own wall of thorns and gets you bleeding you will bleed forever. you've got no way of removing conditions at all so they can stack those bleeds or rots and you could find yourself in trouble. id maybe swap the colossus belt for a regrowth belt at least. i know you have deathlock, but you've got no walls or intercept guards so as soon as you play it the other mage has to kill it. and kill it they will.

4. im not sure if you will actually cast combustion 4 times a game. it really only pays off if there are 3 or more burns on a target, and then youre forfeiting damage over time for all the damage now X2. and with the prevelance of cards that can extinguish, and them being really cheap and quick i think you might have a tough time making that many burns stick.

5. I've seen explode be prohibitively expensive too many times to not want at least one dissolve. sometimes you just gotta get it done on the cheap, or doing two things that turn is needed.

6. It looks like you wanna stay back and set stuff on fire, which i love, and it might behoove you to grab Cloak of Shadows. Obscured is Amazing!!

7. Poisoned blood and rust are both awesome triggers for your mages abilities. maybe you dont need rust but poisoned blood would be great for this book.

like i said i like it! I think youve got a good basis here. let us know how it worked out. Also can you tell us a couple opening plans? what are you gonna do for the first 3 turns?
