Title: My Spell Books look terrible
Post by: gbatt on February 01, 2013, 11:06:15 AM
I posted this originally on BGG, but figured I should have posted it here

The plastic on both books are really wrinkled and warped and one of the books is really bent so that the back and front cover are really skewed and don’t line up.

I know it’s just cosmetic but I’m really anal about stuff like this and it bothers me so much that I don’t even want to use the books.

I checked online and I don't see that they have any spell books from the core set for sale, only the ones with the fancy graphics and I don’t much care for those.

Has anyone else had these issues? Does anyone know if the original core set spell books are available for purchase?

Hey gbatt,

I am very sorry to hear that you had trouble with the spellbooks.

Please email us your contact information at customerservice@arcanewonders.com and we'll make it right.

If it's not to much trouble include a picture of the bad books so we can talk to our manufacturer.

Sincerely,

John

Use a hair dryer on low setting to slowly shrink the plastic covering on the books. A buddy did that recently for his and it worked wonders.

Thanks Thessial.

I had sent an email yesterday about the issue I had with the first Core Set spell book yesterday, and didn't hear back from anyone. I sent a message this morning through your web page about the second set of spell books I got but didn't include pictures of them.

I just sent an email to customerservice@arcanewonders.com with the pictures.

Thanks for the assistance!

I too used a hair dryer, though on high, for my bubbly books.  They look perfectly fine now.  I highly recommend trying it out and maybe saving AW the cost of two new books that they could maybe, kinda, sorta, possibly put into getting us our first expansion!  *tee hee*

Seriously though, the hair dryer trick worked perfectly for me.

gbatt,

I am on it. We'll get you resolution today!

pixelgeek,

Thank you for that suggestion. I'll have to try that myself as well. I am a bit of a visual perfectionist and while my covers are great...they could be better. Of course in the end I want leather bound spellbooks. :D

Sincerely,

John

What I'm wondering is the reasoning behind switching the side the card slots open halfway through the book?

For me it would be a lot more convenient and easier to add and remove cards to the book if all the pages were facing the same way

Thats with any binder like this...I have ultrapro/MtG/monster ones, They all at some point go in reverse. I just made a habit of slightly pushing the card up with my thumb nail from the bottom of the card. For some reason, they are all like this from all manufactures.

If it really drives you crazy, you could always buy a 3-ring binder book and put the sheets in yourself. The have some nice ones at retail sites online. There not the awesome MW ones but....If its a OCD thing.

The monster ones aren't, not at least the ones I have. Each page is double sided and loads from the side.

Both of my books were like this. I found once you had a spell book full of cards that this problem solved itself. I couldn't answer why.

Mine are about a month old.

Man I love these things. They've actually got enough room to hold two mages worth of spells.

Edit:

Well I guess I suck at embedding images, but there's the link nevertheless.

So I received my new spellbooks yesterday and they look awesome! Thank you so much Alfiya!

The one book that had the skewing issue was because the pages were glued to the plastic spine in a VERY crooked manner, so even filling the book up with cards it is still completely crooked.

I attempted to fix it myself by pulling out the ream of pages and re-gluing it to the plastic spine straight, but I ended up completely ruining the book, which is fine because I got the replacements.

Not only did Alfiya send me new spell books but she offered to send a Mage Wars T-shirt to my son, who happens to love the game now we are both hopelessly infatuated with this game now.

How awesome is that!?

BTW, I usually hang out over at BGG but it looks like there’s a lot going on over here. I’m gonna have to spend more time here!

I had problems with my spell books at first also.  The sleeves weren't stuck to the spine.  That gave me the impetus to trick out my books with leather, felt, nice beads, glass, insects in resin, etc.

Examples below !  Try it!  It's great fun to play with a SPELLBOOK with heft and leather smell!!

the spell books in my set are pretty poor which is a shame considering how well they are designed in terms of art.  i'm just guessing poor manufacturing.

the blow dryer thing didn't really help but, it's not a huge deal for me.  as long as they hold the cards, sort of help with the immersion of the game world, i'm ok with it.

another suggestion would be a slot or two on the inside covers for me to put additional cards w/ personal info on them.  i made a "wizard" card w/ my tag on it just to personalize it a little more - just spent a few minutes.  (i'm going to make it a lot better when i have more time.)
