Do the defenses (Golden shields) work on attack spells ? or just normal attacks ?

thanks

So long the attack spell type matches.

IE a Melee only defense cant stop a Ranged attack (denoted the little arrow icon)
A Ranged only defense CAN stop a Ranged attack, which most Attack spells are

Neither can be used against a Zone attack, as Zone attacks are neither classified as ranged or melee.

Also, if an attack is "unavoidable" you cant use defenses no matter what.

So if attack spells are cosidered to be an attack, than +ranged (like Hawkeye) gives +1 attack die to spells like lightning bolt? Sorry for hijacking the thread, but I figured it has the same base problem.

Yes. And Hawkeye stacks with Lightning Ring, for example, to give your ranged lighting attack spells +2 dice.

Since "Lightning Ring" was mentioned I thought I would ask here.

Am I reading the card wrong that it increases "Range" by 1 and it increases "Melee" damage by 1 for lightning based attacks?  I love the Wizard and love lightning attacks (particularly Chain Lightning) but are there any "melee" attacks that are lightning based?  All the lightning bolts, arc lightning etc all seem to be ranged and not melee so does the Ring work for those spells.

Is the lightning barrier damage shield melee based?

You are reading it right, and so far there is no Equipment or Enchantment that causes lightning melee attacks available for sale. Valshalla has a lightning melee attack, but there is no way to put the Lightning Ring on her.

The lightning damage barrier is not a melee attack because it lacks the melee icon.

hmm ok that is what I thought.  I would think for a lightning ring it would make more sense to increase "ranged" damage and not increase "melee" damage.  But at least it increases the range.

Bonus question on stacking...

Do traits stack or does it take the highest value?

Like I "think" if you have regen +1 and regen +2 on a creature only the +2 works it doesn't get +3 right?

So for something like increased range can you stack those?  ie could you equip a lightning ring for +1 range AND have Hawkeye on for ANOTHER +1 so you would get +2 range or would you just get +1?

Typically "+"1 stack but 1 does not. So Melee +1 and Melee +1 stack to make melee +2. However Rengen 1 and Regen 2 do not stack, so you only have Regen 2 in the end. So modifiers with plus/minus signs stack, ones without do not...

Gotcha that makes sense and actually clears up a couple other questions I may have had.  I'm still pretty new to the game, but love it so far and I am getting into it.  Thanks for the clarification.

So you can have Ranged +2 then, which I can think of a couple handy situations for that.  Cool.

Yes you can have Ranged +2, but the +2 is for Dice of Damage not additional range......

OMG I am a noobie than.  So Range +1 increases your dice not your actual range (as in distance you can fire)?  I am totally not sure what I was thinking (ha you can really tell I am new now).

Is there anything that increases a ranged attackers range?
