Rules Discussion / Nullifying a Reverse Magic
« on: July 31, 2014, 05:46:04 PM »
I looked all around of the forums to see if I could find a ruling. I was having a post game conversation on OCTGN with Imaginator and said that I if I was his opponent that I would of loved to [mwcard=MW1E35]Reverse Magic[/mwcard] his [mwcard=MW1I08]Drain Life[/mwcard]. He said it would not of mattered as he already had a [mwcard=MW1E29]Nullify[/mwcard] and he would have to reveal it to counter the Drain Life.

I thought that once the Reverse Magic was revealed that the Counterspell Step was over and therefore Nullify would not be able to be played. I.E. you can't Reverse Magic a Reverse Magic. Am I wrong?

Let us know what you think about it!

Please note that we would like for you to play the game until the game registers a mage death (or you can concede the game via Ctrl+End) as long term we want to gather statistics and winning is one of those biggies we would like to capture!

Once again you will catch a theme with my spellbooks, they are designed to meet a 3 turn rush agro build and I hope some flexibility for other types of books. I have gotten much better at playing the control type build this play style requires.  Typically I bring out the Crossbowman the first round and a Brace Yourself (one of my favorites in the set). I then continue to build out with the Panzergarde and then the Alchemist. I have the option for Talos in this build. I have gotten him out once and he was devastating with a Battle Fury and Charge to wipe the opposing mage from the arena.

You will note a large number of cheap Outposts, by round 5, I typically have 2 out I like to drop a Garrison Post on the other side of the board from where the action is, remember this is against a few big strategy. I then bring out the Goblin Builder with the Garrison Post and start moving him 1 zone and drop Altar of Domination, then move one more zone and drop another outpost or my mage will drop the third one, depending upon pressure. I then keep the Builder moving so he is 2 zones away from the nearest Outpost and ready to keep 3 Outposts going on the board so as to keep the Altar from stalling out. Once he builds an Outpost the next round he moves twice again to the next zone in preparation for an Outpost. Since he is very fragile I try at all costs to keep him out of the action and when the opportunity presents itself I have placed a Brace Yourself on him for insurance.

This book has won the last two games against the Warlock (Arraxian Crown).

Spellbook Design and Construction / Infamati et Obliterati

Continuing with the Latin name theme, here is my Necro Spellbook. This one was built around Sardonyx during playtesting so it was made as a skeleton themed book. I have since pulled out the dragon and continued to tune this book. I demolished a Warlock + LoF agro book with this yesterday.

We added Apprentice Mode this time around, along with an advanced apprentice mode we are calling OCTGN Apprentice Mode. Lots of other enhancements too!

As always I want to thank lettucemode for his dedication, and for this release I want to include thanks for Schwenkgott for building and testing out the OCTGN Apprentice Mode.

General Questions / Teleport its Range and Targets
« on: May 16, 2014, 06:01:32 PM »
Though this topic has been covered several times, I thought that I would write up a Pin worthy explanation along with a big picture to help.  Teleport is one of the most misread and misinterpreted spells that I see in the game. I am constantly being asked online (OCTGN) to help explain. I have gotten better at explaining, but still get the rage quit more often than I would like.

So here we go! Once Teleport is revealed, the two properties of most interest here is the Range and Target items. The Range property is obvious, or so you would think! The second property is Target, and is the source of most the confusion. We have two targets, Creature and Zone. For both of these targets, the Range is calculated from the Mage (or Creature) casting the Teleport spell.  Above we have the Holy Light of a Priestess casting the Teleport spell on to the Darkness of a Warlock. The green arrow represents the first target in the Target Bar the "Creature” i.e. the Warlock.  The Warlock must be within two zones of the mage casting the spell, in this example the Priestess, and also be in Line of Sight (LoS) to be a legal target for this spell. Now for the second Target: the “Zone”. The target “Zone” must be within two zones of the spell caster and the zone must be in Line of Sight (LoS) of the spell caster to be a legal target. I have placed face down cards to represent legal target zones for the Priestess in this scenario.  As you can see the furthest you can move the Warlock is four zones for a cost of twelve mana.

A couple of points for new players. If you have a hidden Nullify on a target of the Teleport, make sure to have the target zone identified before revealing the Nullify. LoS plays a very important part of this spell. If there was a wall with the LoS Blocked trait between the Priestess and the zone below her, the zone below her would no longer be a legal target for the "Zone" part of the spell. However, if there was a wall that blocked LoS below the Warlock, the Warlock and all zones pictured would still be legal targets for this spell, as it is the LoS of the spell caster that matters. With the upcoming release of Forged in Fire the new spell Rolling Fog, which places the Obscure trait on all zones for three rounds would completely prevent this play.

I hope this helps everyone with a better understanding of this spell and how it functions!

Strategy and Tactics / The value Mana Flower and Mana Crystal
« on: April 07, 2014, 04:33:46 PM »
I have read many times over the last couple of years about it is not worth it to cast one of these, as it "Takes 5 rounds to get the mana you spent back and the games don't last that long". Other than falling to a hyper aggressive mage by not seeing it coming and preparing properly, this should not be the case.

Typically you will read this to: "The better mages channel 10 instead of 9 mana".  In some ways this perception is a result of the statement above.

Why is that you may ask?

While, it is true that these will cost you five mana and a Quick Action to cast, I believe that they are worth much more than the 5 mana that they will generate over the 5 game rounds it will take for them to pay for themselves by providing action efficiency each round via the higher channeling and the doors this opens. By casting one or two of these you have increased your channeling by one or two each round. I know this is an obvious point, but keep reading. I am going to focus for this theory craft, on the Warlord here as this topic was brought up last in Laddinfance build a book thread.

With both Flowers cast, you don’t have to wait every other round to get out a mid-level creature like a [mwcard=FWC01] Dwarf Kriegsbiel [/mwcard] or [mwcard=MWSTX1CKC07] Dwarf Panzergarde [/mwcard] each cost 11 mana. This means that in three rounds with two flowers cast and with no [mwcard=FWJ03] Barracks [/mwcard] have two nice level 3 creatures and the ability for next 3 rounds to get two more out, along with a [mwcard=MW1Q06] Dragonscale Hauberk [/mwcard] and Morning Star. You could not do the same with Barracks as it cost 12 mana plus one or two more Outposts and then another round to Channel up. However, I do like the Barracks so I would choose to cast it out on round 2 along with the Dragonscale Hauberk. On round 3 I would summon my other two low cost Outposts. So come round 4, I am now able to bring out every round one of the following creatures: [mwcard=MWSTX1CKC01] Bridge Troll [/mwcard], [mwcard=FWC07] Grimson Deadeye, Sniper [/mwcard], Bloodcrag Minotaur, or [mwcard=MW1C06] Brogan Bloodstone [/mwcard]. As you can see, the enhancement of the increased channeling opens avenues to your mage that otherwise you couldn’t afford each round. With 9 channeling and a Barracks you are limited each round to less favorable creature selections. With a Hype aggressive build, I would summon a Dwarf Kriegsbiel or a [mwcard=MWSTX1CKC06] Guardian Angel [/mwcard] early and let it blunt the Agro Mages charge while continuing to build on the above strategies. Soon enough with a little preparation you will be spewing out creatures and gain the action advantage on the agro mage and take him down.

The only other point I have is the classic [mwcard=MW1J13] Mana Flower [/mwcard] vs. [mwcard=MW1J12] Mana Crystal [/mwcard] which one should I pick question. Other than the Warlord (and maybe the Nature mages if my spell points are very tight) I always go with the Crystal. Flame based damage is a such vulnerability in game that I value the Flame Immunity trait of the Crystal over the Regenerate 2 trait of the Flower even for the Nature mages.

To make one of these work you have to cast them very early in the game, after round two, it is probably too late. I always cast these out round one, that way I can have them bumping my Channeling from the very start of the game. Other than that I don't do much to protect them other than "if" a friendly creature is in the same zone and I want it to stay there for whatever reason, I will put it on guard.

I hope this helps when you are planning your spellbooks!
